1 The Caravaner MESSAGE FROM THE FIRESIDERS Welcome to Hurkey Creek! A Versatile Group of the Firesider s arrived early Tuesday morning at Live Oaks on a cool sunny and windy day. The host tent was set up and ready to go by early evening. This included cleaning and decorating the pavilion. Come early Wednesday morning all were ready to start checking in the 8 AM arrivals with a Rose and Flag for each rig in honor of Mother s Day and Memorial Day in remembrance of our Veterans. Thanks to both for a job will done. During the four-day event there were many activities that took place each day for all to enjoy. A BIG thanks to the At Large - Outback s and any other Caravaner s involved for the awesome Friday Pancake Breakfast, which was enjoyed by many Lazy Dazer s. Also, there was plenty of time to visit with family, friends, and new comers. There were a total of 96 rigs in camp, including 1 first timer and 2 guests. Under the new hosting system the caravan club seems to be running smoothly and with great enthusiasm. Thanks to the new officers and representatives. The Firesider s thank one and all the other caravaner s that worked the host tent and registered arriving members, making this an outing to remember. Lazy Daze Caravaner 1

3 Goodwill Ambassador Report It has been reported that JAN HAWKEN #2790 of the Outback s has been in the hospital with pneumonia. We hope she is feeling better by the time you all are reading this. Drifter, ED WIDMER #944 tripped and fell last month before Live Oak. He managed to receive a broken nose, along with a broken left arm and a broken right hand. His broken left arm required surgery. It looks like getting dressed in the morning is going to be problem for awhile. Also, ED WIDNER s daughter-in-law, Dawn recently died of cancer. JOHN McCARTNEY #2728 died on May 15th. He had been very ill in the hospital with a serious heart infection. He was a member of our Southern California group as well as belonging to the Northern Exposures (N.E.L.D.). Their address is listed in the latest issue of club roster if you would like to send his wife, MARGARET a card. The loss of another of our members is DOREEN EV- ANS #2865 of the No Mad s. She passed away sometime in March. I m sorry I have no other information on her. More Lazy Dazers are enjoying the Church of the Lazy Daze now that we have Saturday Service. Mona Shaner MonaL@sbcglobal.net It has come to my attention that a few Lazy Dazers are having trouble filling out the registration on their computers. In working with a caravaner, I discovered that the file was opened up in Preview instead of Acrobat Reader. Make sure that you have the file opened in the most current Acrobat Reader when filling out the form and you should have no problems. 6 CPR and AED Training We, as a Lazy Daze Caravan Club, have purchased an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm for use in an emergency. Under the tutelage of Joanne Wayne, your Safety Team was taught the basics of CPR and AED at the Live Oak Caravan. Joanne going through CPR training with Donna LaPorte. Greg Young refreshing his training. Greg is an experienced CPR giver. After each member of the Safety Team did CPR on Annie, it was time to bring out the AED. The AED is in the red case at the top of Annie s head. As you can see, it is very compact. Dave Spencer and Sandi Bartel are learning how to place the electrodes from the AED onto Annie (the dummy). A note about the AED: This machine is only hooked up to a patient if he/she is not breathing. When attached to a patient, the AED will analyze and decide if a shock is needed. It will not shock a person if it is not needed. CPR is continued until help arrives on the scene. A big THANK YOU to the Lazy Daze Caravan Club for your wise decision to purchase the AED. Another huge THANK YOU to Joanne Wayne for training the Safety Team. As a member of the Team, I hope we never have to use the AED nor use CPR but I feel much better knowing we have a way of saving someone s life. Peggy Zabel 6 Lazy Daze Caravaner

7 Mickey & Minnie Washer Toss! Hosted by Frances Smith Don t be Goofey! Come out and Play! Friday at 1:PM at Hurkey Creek See You There! A BIG THANK YOU! From Bob & Frances Smith I just wanted to give kudos to all the Outbacks and At Large people who worked so diligently in putting on our pancake breakfast. Thanks to Mike Bartel for adjusting and making our stove safe. Special thanks to Don Reiner for his culinary pancake techniques. I believe Dave Nordstrom has a new career, flipping pancakes. He just wouldn t quit until he had fed the multitudes. Terry Tanner, Florence Moore, Margot Kody, Joann Watson and Priscilla Beckman probably don t want to look at another sausage or bacon piece again. The number of people who lent their stoves, pans, spatulas etc. are too numerous to mention, but thanks. Also thanks to Admiral Watson, who directed our warming pans and cleaning, plus he kept us on our toes in the sausage wars. I know Lurlie must have dish pan hands for all the cleaning she did. I know Greg Young must have been in the navy since he swabbed our floors clean. I can t forget the servers were diligently getting your plate ready and kept you entertained while waiting for your hot pancakes. The clean-up crew can come to my home anytime to clean. I know the kitchen and eating area was cleaner after they cleaned than before. Least but not least a big thank you to the club for allowing us to provide a free breakfast to you. 10 Terry s Tech Talk Tech Talk Article 60 Fuel Pump Failure 2001 Ford E450 Part 2 06/2011 Tech Talk Article 58 described the fuel pump failure in my 2001 Lazy Daze Rear Bath that happened on my way home from the February Caravan at Buena Vista near Bakersfield. The starter would spin the engine but it would not start. The repair required a tow and cost $1482 mostly because the fuel pump is located inside the Ford fuel tank and is inaccessible unless the fuel tank is dropped. The rig ran perfect to the March Caravan at Vial Lake. I backed the rig out to wash it on the Sunday before the April Caravan at Tucalota Springs and all was well. Later in the afternoon, I went to start it and it was back to the spin but no start behavior. Monday morning I called for a tow back to Benchmark RV in Sun Valley. It was a 40 foot flatbed tow that went smoothly once I pulled the rig out into the street with my Jeep Wrangler hooked up to the tow bar. I used the time between the failure and the tow to check out some possible sources of the problem. Under the hood on the driver s side front corner is the power distribution box. Once the cover is removed, the fuses and relays accessible. I looked in the Owner s Manual and found the locations of the Fuel Pump Relay and the Fuel Pump Fuse. The Distribution Box with the cover removed is shown below: I pulled the fuse and it was good. I swapped the Fuel Pump Relay with the Horn Relay just above it and tried, without success, to start it. Checking these two items might save you a tow. In my case the new Ford Fuel Pump was bad and was replaced again under warranty. They replaced the relay for $17. The rig ran fine and started right away during the Live Oak Caravan so I have about 250 miles on this Fuel Pump. The new bad Fuel Pump was getting current. I never had any performance problems with the Fuel Pump while running. The failures always happened when the Fuel Pump stopped. It seems like it is Ford Roulette and if the pump just happens to land on Green 00 when it shuts off, then its tow time. The new bad pump worked for 450 miles. I hope that there is no Part 3 to this story. Techsnoz, the Tech Talk website. Check it out at: Terry Tanner Rig # Lazy Daze Caravaner

12 Mother Nature Lurlie Edgecomb #2285 The live oaks for which our camp is named are found throughout the Lake Cachuma area. Sometimes called the holly-leaved oak, this broad tree with slender acorns has been over-grazed on ranches. It is evergreen whereas the very tall valley oak that we saw at the far end of the corral loses its pretty leaves in the winter. Those leaves are long and lobed. Neither tree can take its roots being in soggy soil as oak root fungus will kill them. Most of the underbrush has been eliminated in camp so we walked the perimeter over two days. Cow parsnip is tall with white flower heads. The fuchsia-flowered gooseberry and hummingbird sage both have purple flowers. Wild radish, wild mustard, chamomile and miner s lettuce are supposed to be edible. So are the acorns, but you have to know how to treat them before you consume them. The Chumash Indians did it. There were several villages where the lake is now. We spotted Scotch broom, wild larkspur, heron s bill (filaree), a nettle thistle, and horehound. Does anyone have a good wildflower book I could borrow for the summer? Birds and critters were abundant in and around camp. From the noisy crows and grackles, silent turkey vultures, and a red-tailed hawk overhead to the violet-green swallows swooping around us, we had plenty to watch. From tree to ground level, plentiful oak titmice and western bluebirds and a few black phoebes were busy snatching bugs and a seed or two. Quail were on the trail in front of us. Ground squirrels darted here and there. Acorn woodpeckers could be seen and heard. A trilling could be heard occasionally, the bird remained unseen. The house finches sound happy as they go about nest duties, especially those in or near the Pavilion. From their way out back rig, John and Priscilla Beckman watched for an hour as first a single turkey vulture tried to pull something out of a squirrel hole, then 9 others arrived to help pull a large snake out. And then they all ate and ate. I have heard before that vultures don t always wait until their prey is deceased. I finally got to see a hen turkey in camp on an extra walk around the corral. Many of our field reporters told of seeing a tom doing his strutting and feather display. Some of you were amazed at the stealth of the great-blue heron (mostly gray) as it got what it came for--a ground squirrel. Out on your walks, you told of seeing a bobcat, a skunk, small snakes, deer, more turkeys and quail. There was a possible sighting of a young mountain lion. Please don t walk alone. The last several months, it has been hard to get a large group together because of scheduling conflicts. So I have been taking several small groups when we can fit a walk in. We make less noise and try to go different ways to perhaps see something new. At this time, I do not know if I will be at Hurkey Creek. Listen for an announcement or see you in September.
