Page 2 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE What a busy time at W.D. Cuts with only three weeks left until the Christmas break! Volleyball has wrapped up, and another banner will soon be hanging in the gym; congratulations to our senior girls team for winning the Tier 2 championship! As always, a big thank you to our student athletes for their ambassadorship, and to the coaches: Mr. Witschen, Mrs. Rivet, Mr. Biollo, Mr. Heale, Ms. Atkinson, and Miss Nichol for all their time and dedication. Basketball season is already underway, with both senior teams picked and junior tryouts happening next week. 'Tis also the season for festive music. Our guitar students had a performance this week, for many their first ever, and our winter band concert is coming up on Tuesday December 4th at the Arden Theatre, always a wonderful showcase of our musically talented students. Speaking of talent, our 3rd annual Snowdown Talent Show will be happening on December 21st, and it's not too late for students to sign up. So, if you have a child that can sing, dance, play, act, recite, perform, or dazzle, encourage him or her to see Mrs. Brown-Allnutt. It will also be a pajama/ugly sweater fun day on that Friday, and don't forget it's early dismissal. Have a happy holiday season, everyone! Peter Fenton Principal W.D. Cuts
Page 3 Senior Volleyball Wrap Up Congratulations to our senior volleyball teams! Girls beat MCHS in 3 sets to win the Tier 2 championship. Boys made it to the semi-finals in Tier 1. Congratulations to all players for their hard work and leadership representing our school. Thanks to Mr. Witschen, Mrs. Rivet, Mr. Biollo, and Mr. Heale for their time coaching these two teams. Take Your Kids to Work Day November 14 th On November 14th our grade 9 s participated in the annual Take-Your-Kids-To-Work day. Each of our grade 9 students followed a parent or friend to their workplace to shadow for the day. November 14 - By Damien Lee During take your kid take your kid to work day, me and my dad worked on a couple projects together. He also took me through a regular day of work, and things unique to his job. He had me help curate a list of games for a website of a Bar/Adult Arcade, finding the names, descriptions, and posters for each game. He also showed me how he fixed both the Sage server, and someone's IMAP server. Though he works from home, he still does a lot of work, and I learned plenty from the short amount of time I spent with him. Though design and I.T. is not an industry I would want to get into, now having experience with it, I found it really cool to see how his very unique job works. Overall, I found Take-Your-Kid-To-Work-Day a very engaging and helpful experience. It will definitely help me choose my own career later on, and I feel that it was an important day that everyone should experience. Developing Healthy Habits/Routines The cover of TIME magazine this month is "The Power of Habits." This topic is often discussed in my office with students, parents, and teachers. Most often I share strategies on creating a homework routine. A great document that I often reference is the "Parent Advantage" from Learn Alberta that is available online. This document outlines simple ways to create a homework routine or habit. Here are 3 steps to helping your child develop some healthy routines Avoid external rewards. With adolescents you can chat with them about "why" you are trying to develop a new habit. This will have far more impact over an external reward. 2. Model positive habits. Your children and watching closely. Rather than going through mental checklists silently in your head, consider saying it out loud. "Lunches are made. Report written for work. Workout bag is packed. I am ready for tomorrow." 3. Patience. Research says it takes 30 days to form a new habit. Give it time for new routines to form. There will be good weeks and bad weeks. Remind your children to use setbacks as feedback. Need help with homework habits? Give me a call or send me an . Mrs. Brown School Counsellor

Page 7 WD CUTS JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL COUNCIL - NOVEMBER 26TH, 2018 ENCOURAGING NUMERACY AT HOME Strategy #1: Encourage your family to practice everyday mental math skills. Some examples: At the Grocery Store - Have your child make a mental tally of the total cost before getting to the till. Sales in Stores - Have your child estimate the sale price of items or the price including GST Gas Prices - Estimate the total cost given the price of gas and the number of litres. Driving Distance- If we are driving 100km/h and Calgary is 350 km away, how long will it take us to get there? Basic Facts in Car -Practice timetables orally while driving. Recipes- Bake together and have your child use mental math to find ingredient amounts when doubling or halving the recipe. Sports- Points per game, how many games until McDavid scores 50 points Board Games- Let your child be the scorekeeper. Join them! Let your child see you using mental math! Strategy #2: Use math websites for extra practice at home. Math IXL - Alberta Curriculum Based Outcomes - Fee is required Math Focus Sites Grade Grade Grade Khan Academy - No Fee - lots of great videos and questions to support content Youtube and Google - type in the outcome that the student is learning and worksheets, instructional videos and lots of other fun things pop up. Multiplication Facts- Strategy #3: Play games together Dice Games: Dice_and_Card_Games_to_Practice_Math_Facts.pdf Multiplication War- Card Game: multiplication_math_war_fourth/ Salute (Addition or Multiplication Game):
Page 8 REC ACADEMY The month of November has been filled with new opportunities. Never before has our Recreation Academy gone to the Edmonton Batting Cages, Monster Golf, Inner Tube Water Polo or Panther's Gym. All of these new experiences were diverse and totally unique. We have been leaving the school at 12:30 for many of these outings, and our students have been amazingly well prepared. We appreciate families and students checking the remind app, looking on the website, posting a copy of our schedule on the fridge and/or checking the calendar in the school. Great job, Recreation Academy families.
Page 9 HOCKEY ACADEMY The Hockey Academy student-athletes are doing a great job of moving into our more advanced and specific skills. The grade 7's will begin to focus on position specific skills, while the grade 8 and 9 focus will be on situational play. Many of the skills learned in September, October, and November will be used as a foundational base for both groups. Off the ice, students continue a wide variety of sports in order to see the correlation between skills in other sports and the game of hockey.
