1 Meitheamh 2011 June 15th Anniversary Year AOH Michael Collins Pipes & Drums e all turn to look, hear and see a pipe band as it marches by. Why is that? Is it perhaps some W ancestral call that brings us home to another time? Is it the same reason for us all, or perhaps different for each of us? The individuals that hear the call to play the pipes and drums in a pipe band, are men and women that commit themselves to years of practice, marching in all kinds of weather, and making sure they are available when the band needs them to perform. Some pipe bands come into existence, flourish for awhile, and then quietly fade away. The truth is it is more common for pipe bands to come and go, then to stay and build a lasting legacy. As for their members, they move on to other bands. This too is more common, than unusual. On June 29, 1996 the AOH Michael Collins Pipes and Drums was formed by charter members: David Bonham, Harry Courtney, Tom Farrell, Sarah Genger, K.C. Kolvereid, John Lawson, Jay Leasure, Doug McQuiston, J.D. McQuiston, Jim McQuiston, Adam Medlik, and Tim Pierce. Two weeks later Jim Murphy joined the band. Their first real public performance was in August 1996 when they marched and played in Littleton s Western Welcome Week Parade and were awarded a 3rd Place Trophy. Then it was on to Aspen Colorado in January 1997 when they marched and played in a snowstorm (see photo) and were awarded their first - 1st Place Trophy! Most pipers would agree that freezing temperatures play havoc with keeping the pipes in tune, not to mention it can cause the pipes themselves to crack. So why then march in snow or rain? The answer is commitment. To bring the sound of the ancestral pipes and drums to the public.

Audiences from Denver to the western slopes of Colorado, north to the plains of Wyoming and Montana, east to Nebraska and south down to New Mexico have heard the band play over the past 15 years. The band s fan base is large and very loyal to them. Besides parades and festivals, the band has played for the NBA Denver Nuggets, the NHL-Colorado Avalanche and joined other bands at halftime shows for the NFL-Denver Broncos & Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The man who has maintained their Trophy and Awards case all these years is award winning Drum Major David Bonham. Hughes Throughout most of the band s existence it has been led by Pipe Major Jay Leasure who many have said has the uncanny ability to read the audience, and know exactly what tunes to order up next. Looking back over the past 15 years, Chieftain Jim Murphy said it best when asked what his thoughts were on the upcoming 15th anniversary celebration. Jim stated the MCPD had played at many great places over the years, but perhaps most of all he was thankful for all the new friends he had made. So why is it that this pipe band has survived when others have come and gone? The MCPD has become the premier Irish pipe band in the region due to the fact that their core founding members have stayed true to the original purpose of the band. Always play great Irish pipe music, and stay dedicated to the Irish community. The continuation of the MCPD legacy into the future is secure.
