Water Hunting Tips Before even getting started take a good look at the beach. You will usually, especially on ocean beaches, see areas that are washed out. If it has rained recently you may also notice channels where water has run off the upper beach. These would both be good areas to search. If the beach looks flat with no obvious areas try an S pattern. Walk down the beach at a steady pace from knee deep up to the high water mark. Eventually, you should start to find a pocket of targets. Take note of each target and its relative location to the high water mark. Many times, Mother Nature deposits objects of similar weight in the same area or at the same distance from the high water mark. Once you find several targets and they are all located on the same track you can reduce the size of your pattern and just focus on the more productive path. If at any time you hit a pocket of coins, keep digging. Remember, a pocket of coins mean that Mother Nature has deposited these items together and many times you have to dig all of the coins before hitting the deeper, heavier gold targets which may have been masked by the coin signals. It s not uncommon to dig a hundred pennies before recovering a gold ring. I actually used to keep track of the number of coins recovered. On the beaches I was working I knew that for every coins I would end up with a piece of gold. The only problem is when you find two gold rings immediately. 6 I.T.T.H.C. Treasure News Page 6 Sheppards Point Outing Saturday, July 19 th Overcast skies, high temperature 78, and refreshingly cool water? It must be all that "Global Warming" about which they say there is a scientific consensus! The club outing to Sheppard Point Recreation Area at Heyburn Lake on Saturday, July 19 th was a good one. The club supplied hamburgers, hot links, hot dogs, buns, condiments, & chips. Roger Eaton with help from Ken Fanning handled the cooking. Good job guys, Thank You! Thanks again to John Freeman for picking up the food, supplies, extra scoops, and transporting them to the outing. And Thanks again to John Hamilton for taking and storing the grill & tables and bringing them to the water outings. There were 42 members standing in line to chow down on burgers, dogs, and food brought by club members. Thanks to all those bringing the OUTSTANDING side dishes and desserts. If you went away hungry at this outing, again it was your own fault. After the big feed there were scattered as evenly as possible 231 tokens in a 40 yards X 60 yards designated area. There were 21 tokens for member donated prizes, and 210 tokens for Silver Dimes, Silver Quarters, & Silver Halves. The tokens were painted Wheat Cents, painted & numbered Cents, and painted square pulltabs. When the start signal was given there were 25 water hunters frothing the water. After 1 hour+ of hunting, all but 2 of the square pulltab tokens for Silver Quarters were not recovered. There were several coins, and a few junk jewelry items that were also found. The Sheppard Point Swimming Beach is very clean which makes for easy finding & recovery. As you can see, we did not leave much to be found.
