From Left to Right: Doris Bohuslavicky; Second Place., ; Third Place, Bill Watkins; First Place, Wally Dick. MANY THANKS TO DORIS AND THE TASTING CREW FOR DOING THIS. Deep Hunting Tips by Jim Webb Hopefully these tips will help everyone achieve better results in the deep competition hunts. One thing is for sure! the more you practice the better you will do. 1. Probably the most important, is to keep the detector loop ON the ground. Most hunters have a tendency to lift the loop up from the ground, especially at the end of each swing. 2. Speed of the swing is probably then 2nd most important - Some detectors pick up audio changes with a slow swing, while other detectors work best with a medium speed and some work best with a faster swing. You need to know which speed is best with your detector. 3. The size of your forward step is also important, so you get overlapping coverage with every swing. When the field is evenly buried with the same number of targets in every area, it is much more important to thoroughly cover a small area, than trying to cover the whole field. 4. Retrieval of the target needs to be practiced -1st come the accurate pinpointing. You should be able to get an accurate pinpoint with no more passes over the target than a total of 6. That's 3 passes in 2 directions 90 degrees apart. When you go down, you should have the target pinpointed within a 4 inch diameter spot. Then dig out about a 6 inch plug -- no need to go back over the hole until the hole is approximately 6 inches deep. Note: dig a plug out" chopping away in the hole is a waste of time and energy, get the target and quickly fill the hole back, and start back to swinging. 5. After the hunt is over go back to the field and try to improve on all your techniques. Practice will make you get better. Good Luck, these tips will help in other types of hunting also.
