3 THE COURIER-JOURNAL KENTUCKY DERBY FESTIVAL ADVERTISING SECTION SUNDAY, APRIL 16, Welcome Michael E. Berry, President and CEO, Kentucky Derby Festival Welcome to the 2017 Kentucky Derby Festival! Started with a single parade in 1956, the Festival is now a whirlwind of over 70 special events and part of the fabric of our community. Providing decades of fun for more than 1.5 million patrons annually has made the Festival into one of the most respected and honored special events organizations in the world. This year s Opening Ceremonies: Thunder Over Louisville, blasts off on April 22. The following two weeks of excitement, packed with a variety of events, has something memorable and unique for everyone and fans of all ages. Our staff works with 4,000 volunteers to put on this extravagant celebration every year. It culminates with the Festival s oldest and inaugural event, the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade, which will march in Downtown Louisville on May 4th. More than just fun and entertainment, the Derby Festival generates in excess of $127 million annually for the local economy. Events on the Festival s schedule also help to raise more than $500,000 for local charities each year. We welcome you to our celebration and hope you enjoy the exciting activities we have planned. With dozens of the events offering free admission with a 2017 Pegasus Pin, you can enjoy the festivities without stretching your pocketbook. For 62 years, the Derby Festival has brought this community together like nothing else. It is one of the premiere events of its kind in the world. Take some time to celebrate springtime in the Commonwealth, make the most of Kentucky s signature celebration and create memories that will last a lifetime. Lisa Stevenson, 2017 Chair, Kentucky Derby Festival The stories you tell happen here. KDF's Mission Provide creative and unique entertainment and community service for the people of the Greater Louisville area that directly contributes to the aesthetic, cultural, educational, charitable, and economic development of the area. We will organize, promote and conduct events using the collective efforts and resources of volunteers, small and large businesses, non-profit organizations and governmental entities to enhance the positive international recognition, economic and cultural development, and community image of the Greater Louisville area. We re still Going Green! Expect to see Green Teams and green efforts at many of the Kentucky Derby Festival s events again in The Kentucky Derby Festival s Go Green! Program continues its green efforts at multiple events, including Thunder Over Louisville, Kroger s Fest-a-Ville, U.S. Bank Great Balloon Glow, Marathon/miniMarathon, and the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade. In addition, in 2017, the Festival is proud to offer a zero-waste event at the Kentucky Proud WineFest. The Festival offers single-stream recycling, which allows all the accepted materials to go into the same container. Since no sorting is required, this method will allow for a user-friendly, efficient process at Festival events. The Go Green! program, which is sponsored by LG&E, includes composting of inedible food waste; donation of edible food; use of compostable products; grease recycling and on-site recycling. Concessions by Cox partners to assist with these efforts. Here are some ways you can Go Green with the Kentucky Derby Festival: 1. Use recycling bins at Festival events. 2. Ride your bike to Thunder and Kroger s Fest-a-Ville. 3. Carpool to Kentucky Derby Festival events. 4. Join the Kentucky Derby Festival and purchase Green Energy for your home or office, visit Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation The Kentucky Derby Festival works each year to provide community service that directly contributes to the cultural, educational, charitable and economic development of the community. To further that mission, the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation was founded in The Foundation, a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit charity receives and manages charitable contributions on behalf of the Kentucky Derby Festival Inc., its supporters and the general public. The Foundation perpetuates the Festival s impact on the community by developing projects that highlight the Festival s influence on the area s cultural heritage. It works to further the Festival s educational and charitable mission through exhibitions and performances. Recent KDF Foundation outreach includes awarding $20,000 in savings bonds to the top five finishers in the Derby Festival Spelling Bee, production of the IU Southeast RoboRumble Regional Robotics Tournament, the Academic Challenge and Student Art Contest, as well as organization of the Charity Module running program to assist charitable groups in raising funds through the Festival s Marathon and minimarathon road races. The Charity Module has raised over $2,500,000 for local charities since its inception in Volunteer of the Year Known as one the of the Derby Festival s hardest workers, Bob Holt has been recognized as the 2017 Active Heroes Volunteer of the Year. Since 2009, Holt has worked within the Operations Committee at Kroger s Fest-a-Ville. Currently serving as the co-chair of Operations, Holt over-sees the successful flow between every event and concert over the nine-day run. His organization contributes to the smooth operation of the U.S. Bank Balloon Glimmer, Marathon/ minimarathon finish lines, Battle of the Bounce, PNC Tour de Lou and everything in between. With a smile to accompany his can-do attitude, he explains his satisfaction comes from when an event goes off without a hitch. Known for his spirit, attitude and passion, Holt volunteers because he enjoys the civic involvement and feeling of community within the Festival. There is always someone willing to lend a hand from their event to keep yours going, says Holt. This makes it easy to do what I do.
