14 Page 14 Half-Halt Newsletter of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Association Dear ask the trainer: I am a beginner amateur rider and I want to ride dressage. I can't afford a lot of lessons on the old gray mare. Can you please give me some exercises that I can do to improve myself and my horse to be ready to show show Intro at the March SVDA Schooling Show? Thanks! Beginner Bessie SVDA S ASK THE TRAINER/JUDGE BY: MARTY-ANNA SCHRIEBL Submit your Questions to patriotfarm@wildblue.net There are lots of exercises beginners can do on their own. First, I recommend that you design a riding area the size of a standard dressage ring and put up letters in the appropriate places. This will give you the feel of riding in a show ring; you will learn where the letters are and how to navigate your horse straight along the sides as well as turning through the corners. A very basic exercise but one that cannot be emphasized enough is riding an accurate 20 meter circle. There are diagrams in your test booklet to show you exactly how to ride a 20 meter circle. Draw it out in your practice arena using powdered lime or cones so you know exactly where it is. Ride that circle and make sure your tempo stays the same throughout. Make sure each half of your circle is the same size. For example, start a 20m circle at B. The first half of your circle will be from B to E - count the number of strides you get. The 2nd half of your circle will be from E to B - so count your strides and they should be the same on each half. Practice riding your circles in different areas of your ring and keeping them accurate. Once the circles themselves are no problem, send your horse a little forward, then back on the circle. Establish your trot, then gradually challenge your horse to step more energetically forward, not rushing, just a longer stride. Keep your eyes and chest lifted and your hands steady. After several strides of the bigger trot, gradually ask your horse to come back to the working trot by slowing your posting and emphasizing the sitting phase of your post. Your horse should stay steady in the contact with a soft jaw as he goes more forward or comes back slower. If your hands go up as you post, think about pushing them down as you rise. Practice by laying a crop across your wrists while posting. You can also hold the end of your stirrup leather (just pull it up under your leg) and this can help you understand the feeling of a steady hand. Or try stretching your pinkies down and keeping them in contact with your pommel or saddle pad for a few strides. Another good thing to practice for your first dressage test is turning onto the centerline and riding it straight. Almost everyone overshoots the centerline! I like to think of starting my turn at K or M and I never stop turning as I approach A. Practice riding deep into the corners by trotting some "teardrop" shaped figures: ride from E to K, make a half circle at K and return to the track at E. Then expand on this approach and ride to X after your half circle. Put out some poles or cones to help your horse stay straight if he tends to drift off the centerline. Since all tests have a halt, it's never too soon to start working on immobile, square halts. If your horse shifts a hip to one side, ride some halts next to a rail or fence or put some poles down on the ground to keep him straight. Ensure you are keeping your weight equal on both sides - stirrups, hips and shoulders square. Ride in a clean white saddle pad and check the underside when finished to see if you tend to weight one side more than the other (the sweat/dirt pattern should be symmetrical). If you can't afford regular lessons, try to find a friend who also rides and trade off being each other's eyes on the ground. Read the comments the judge makes on your tests, very often you will find some helpful hints there. Enjoy your journey and good luck! Robyn Nunnally SVDA Instructor/Trainer NCSU Certified Open Horse Show Judge Go around the arena about six feet off the track with the image of your horse staying the same distance off the track all the way around the ring. When you feel him drift towards the rail apply both legs and close your outside fingers into a fist not pulling on the inside rein. Don't forget to soften both your legs and reins once you get the correct response from your horse. Once you the master keeping the horse going straight off the track at a walk and trot then work on the straightness within the transition before adding the canter. Next you can master tempo control. How many times do you feel several different speeds at a trot just going around the ring? As a judge I know people tend to have one speed thru a corner or on a circle and another across the diagonal. The best way to master tempo control is ask the horse to have a bigger trot by posting higher out of the saddle let's say on the long side. Then as you approach the short side post lower and heavier for a slower trot. Make sure you mix it up, slower on the long side then quicker on the short side. Do not go to your hands to bring the trot back just post lower and heavier and stretch up tall with your chest open and eyes up. With practice you will notice you are now in charge of the tempo and can make small adjustments with your seat as needed. For your own position have someone watch you as post and if you are "posting with your hands" hook a finger from each hand around a grab strap you have attached to your saddle. This will help you develop your hands independently of your body. Constantly go thru a check list: is my chest open, do I have a straight line from ear, shoulder, hip and heel? As you are going down the long side are you sitting evenly in your seat bones with your shoulders level. Are your elbows over your hips not straight out in front of you?
