2 About Half Halt Half Halt is published monthly by the SVDA and provided as a service to its members. Murray Newsletter Editor/Webmaster vablonde25@aol.com SVDA encourages its members to submit articles, member updates, information and pictures for publication, however, SVDA reserves the right to edit, reject or use materials as and when deemed appropriate. MEMBER SUBMISSIONS I AM A SLAVE BY: JESSICA ZOSKEY (CONTINUED ON PG.12) I am a slave, owned by a young lady. She dictates my attire, she controls my meals, she plans my exercises, she even expects me to be dressed and cleaned in a specific fashion. My leggings must match the blanket on my back, which must match her attire precisely. Though I am a slave, I love my owner, and work very hard for her. I want to impress her with every movement I make and love her in every way I can. I am a horse, a dressage horse. Each morning as I awaken, I walk into my stall from my paddock to find a newly cleaned floor with fresh shavings, a new pad of hay and a scoop of grain, which my owner insists to overwhelm with vitamins and supplements. I have never been asked whether I delight in these supplements she adds to my morning cuisine, however, I eat them anyway, as I am a slave under a loving owner who only wants the best for me. I then return to my paddock for a midmorning nap, basking in the sun. After awakening from my nap, I find a new pad of hay lying by the fence in my paddock and fresh water in my bucket. I never chose when I eat, how much I eat, or what I eat, but my loving owner, chooses the best meals at the best time and the right amount, or so I am told. As I munch on the hay, my neighbor, Fiora and I discuss our occupations, our masters, and even our attire. She is much younger than I, so I take it upon myself to educate her, as I was educated by my previous neighbor, Kingsley who was much older than I. He moved to a different farm, somewhere in Florida. Anyway, during our discussions Fiora usually mentions the latest gossip; she is young and frivolous and cannot contain herself when it comes to serious issues. However, when she is not discussing Basie s new, uneven, hair cut, or Rena s new platform shoes, I explain to her the importance of working hard to please her owner, Danni. I tell her that Danni is a sweet girl and never means harm; she only wants her to progress and become an amazing horse, like her last horses, Kinglsey and Fievel. Often, Fiora disregards what I am saying because she does not like to work as hard as Danni asks of her; she says it makes her sweat, which is ewwy. For me, it is no challenge to work diligently and earnestly for my proprietor. I know Jess loves me and I know she only asks for my diligence so we can make the North American Young Rider Team; that is our dream! After more intellectual discussion is attempted with Fiora, more naps are taken, and more hay is eaten, my owner usually arrives. This is the best part of my day. I hear her car turn into the cul de sac, then turn into the gravel driveway. I race to my paddock to see her wave and hope to hear her call my name: Blue Bear, she says. I stand with my ears perked and eyes bright until she opens my stall door and places the halter over my head. We then proceed to the cross ties to be dressed for work. My leg bandages are wrapped around my lower leg to support my ankle, or technically referred to as my fetlock. They are not very comfortable, but I have no say in my dress. However, my saddle is fitted precisely to my back, so it is quite comfortable but the saddle pad, which must match my bandages, some times causes my saddle to slide during work which causes rubbing. Once again, I have no say in my attire. The bridle is padded, but the two bits do not taste delightful, nor do they feel so. However, I have no say in my attire. Jess then puts on her gloves, helmet, and boots and we make our way to my beautiful work environment. Visit us online: My owner situates herself in the saddle and we begin to work. First, we trot on a twenty meter circle to warm up my muscles and stretch my neck and back. The stretching often hurts, but I know my owner does it for my benefit. We then do the same in the canter, however, this is to enforce that I must step my hind legs more underneath of my stomach so that I can gradually do so before she tightens the reins and we start the real work. My owner is very tough on me in the warm up. I often wish she would just allow me to stretch my neck and legs at my own leisure, but I work for her and I have no say in my warm up. As she begins to shorten the reins and make me put my hind legs more and more underneath of myself, and asks for my shoulders to come up and my hind quarters to 2 SOUTHEAST VIRGINIA DRESSAGE ASSOCIATION JANUARY 2008

Chesapeake, VA Old Dominion Hay Roff Lane Smithfield, VA Sesroh Tack Shoppe 1408 South Church Street Smithfield, VA I am a Slave Continued from page 2 lower, my muscles really begin to work. She pushes and pushes for me to perform to my best ability. I try my hardest for her because I love her and want to please her. Though I have no say in the exercises, I work diligently in my occupation. I enjoy watching myself in the mirrors at the end of the arena. As we progress down the long side of the arena, Jess asks for my shoulders to come in toward the center of the arena, this is a shoulder in; I gaze into my reflection to match it precisely with what I know Jess expects. I see her watching us as well. She slightly adjusts my body constantly to attain perfection. My neck must stay round and my hind legs active. She taps my hind quarters with a whip to remind me not to fade in energy. I push as hard as I can for I have no choice; however, I enjoy pleasing my owner. She works diligently to teach me and work with me so I reciprocate by working diligently to learn and work for her. Jess then asks me to accomplish a pirouette. My haunches must continue moving as my shoulders rotate around them in a two to five meter rotation. These are very difficult. My haunches begin to ache, my neck muscles become tense and yet Jess insists they stay pliable and my haunches continue to push. I have no voice in what I do, I am a slave to her decisions and desires, however, I know she loves me and only pushes me to attain our goal. We achieve many more tasks during our workouts such as, half passes, tempi changes, haunches in, and extended trots. After a hard workout, I walk around the perimeter of the arena to cool down. Often Jess takes me around the covered arena for a little adventure walk. We stop by the neighbor s fence to see the goats that typically make a snorting noise at me. However, recently the neighbor has purchased jennies, a type of donkey. These creatures smell horrible, make a wretched shrieking noise, and are the oddest looking, shortest horses I have ever seen. I try to ignore their presence and return my attention to the goats, but the jennies are so rude and loud I cannot help but be distracted. Upon returning to the barn, Jess dismounts and hand walks me to the cross ties. I always nuzzle her shoulder as we approach the barn. She takes off my bridle and allows me to scratch my muzzle, but only on my leg. I am disciplined if I try to scratch on her on the stall door. She then puts on my halter but does not hook the cross tie to me. She allows me to stand free as she takes off my wardrobe. I always turn my head toward her and kiss her arms, shoulders, and back. It makes her blush and smile every time. Without doubt, she returns the favor with numerous kisses on my nose and an occasional hug around my neck. I love to receive those two things from her because I know it is a symbol of a job well done. When I return to my stall, after being untacked, I wait by the door with my head overhanging the stall guard for a treat. Every time Jess puts me in my stall she walks to the treat box and returns with a wonderful snack of either a sugar cube, an apple wafer, or if I was exceptionally well behaved a juicy, red, apple. If it were my choice I would eat these treats constantly. I would gorge myself on apples and sugars but I do not choose my snacks, or my food, or my delights. I am a slave, a slave of a loving owner and master. I work diligently for her and abide by her demands. I make little to no choices for myself and have little to no freedom. I am a dressage horse, a working animal. I strive to please, though I am prohibited from choosing my lifestyle. 12 SOUTHEAST VIRGINIA DRESSAGE ASSOCIATION JANUARY 2008
