SVDA Member Updates Tristin Hardy Butler riding the stallion Windvogel (affectionately known as Kody) owned by Nancy Pettet at Williamston, NC earned a 2 nd place at Third level test 3. Nancy Pettet showing one of her stallion s 5 yr olds Whirlwind at Williamston, NC earning scores in the mid-60 s. SVDA Members Come to the Rescue!!! A Big THANK YOU from Tristin Hardy Butler It was a mostly sunny day in late October and two SVDA members were on their way to the Region 1 Championships in Lexington, VA. Excited and looking forward to the competition, they were happily driving along I-64 just outside of Charlottesville with two of their horses. When all of a sudden, the truck had trouble going up one of the mountains! I pulled over to the side of the road, looked into my rear view mirror to see white smoke billowing from the tailpipe. Get far away from the truck! I shouted to Kya Endreson. We jumped out of the truck and luckily I had been able to pull over where there was a large shoulder and a long grassy bank so we were relatively safe from the traffic buzzing past. I called 911 due to the smoke, however, luckily the truck was not on fire! Two very nice troopers stopped, one from the 911 call and one just an off duty officer on his way home, and they were very helpful in finding a tow truck driver that would deal with a horse trailer loaded with horses. The tow truck hauled us to the nearest exit where we were safe from traffic and near two gas stations so we were not stranded. He then towed the truck to the nearest Ford mechanic. Meanwhile, I was on the phone calling insurance companies and friends and family. Please see the separate information on the American Rider s Insurance, it is invaluable! First, I called Beth Rippel, as I knew she went up to the show a day early to volunteer. Who is already at the show that could possibly come and haul my long gooseneck 4-horse trailer the rest of the way from Charlottesville to Lexington? Kya and I and our two horses were still stranded on the side of the road. Thankfully, both Hazel and Elfie get along and are very calm travelers. My next call was to Kathy and Mike Rowse as Beth knew they had already checked in to the show. I explained the situation and asked if there was anyway they could come rescue us. I happened to catch Kathy as she was preparing to ride but she said she would find Mike and call me back. Next I called Nancy Pettet. I knew she was coming up to volunteer for the weekend and I asked if there was anyway she could drive her big truck instead of her car and tow my trailer home. Of course, Nancy was happy to help and did end up hauling me and my trailer home. She also reminded me that Sandy Johnson was already at the show and perhaps she could come to get us. And that was my next call. Sandy was finishing with her horses and unloading and was able to come and pick us up, haul my trailer and horses the rest of the way to Lexington. This was fabulous as we were still an hour away so this was at least 2 hours out of Sandy s night.
Continued from Page 6 I next called Kathy and Mike to let them off the hook, although they were working out how to come and get us as well. Meanwhile, Kya was on the phone with her mom, Ginger, letting her know what was happening. Ginger was driving up after work to meet us that evening. She was happy we were ok, and changed plans and brought up her truck and trailer to take the horses home. I had also called Alexis and Ann Beth Taves since Alexis was meeting us up at the show to help. The Taves very nicely volunteered the use of their truck if I needed to tow the trailer home. Nancy Pettet and Jeff Rouse went the extra mile by lending me their extra car for a month while my truck was getting fixed up in Charlottesville. By the way, Kya and I made good use of our time while sitting on the side of the road. After filling the horses hay nets (Kya had to crawl through one of the windows to reach the hay bales in the extra stall) and offering them water, we took turns practicing our tests by walk, trot and cantering in the gravel parkway where we had drawn out a mini arena in the dirt. I must say, Kya had some excellent half passes and expressive yet balanced extended trot, while my tempi s were clean, straight and well centered every time! Thank you Kya for being such a good sport and staying so calm and helpful through the whole ordeal. I finally have my truck back, and it s a really good feeling! Luckily the random shop the troopers and tow truck driver recommended really did help me out I had absolutely no idea where to tow the truck in Charlottesville! My truck is only 5 years old and has been regularly serviced per the manufacturer s requirements, this should not have happened. It was just past the 5 year extended warranty but under the mileage. So, the service manager had me call a special Ford 800 number and he took care of the rest. He was able to get Ford to pay for over half of the repair costs, which were astronomically expensive! So, even though this could have been a horribly tragic incident, I feel like the angels were looking out for us that day in so many ways. I want to extend a huge Thank You to everyone for their help. I truly do not know how I would have managed without a little help from my friends, and feel they would help out anyone in dire need if possible. I hope I have not left anyone out, there were so many folks who were ready to lend assistance. I am proud to be a member of SVDA thank you! Tristin Hardy Butler
SVDA Scholarship Report By: Kya Endreson With receiving one of the SVDA s scholarships, I was able to clinic with several different instructors, and at each lesson I had a lot of fun, and learned a lot. I really benefited from each instructor, and learned many new excercises that really helped Hazel and I. Jim Kofford- When I worked with Jim, we really concentrated on getting Hazel to become quicker off of my leg, with more jump and forward energy. It was awesome to feel hazel flicking her toes out in front of her as we worked on having more spring in her trot. Even though Jim really focused on Hazel going more forward, he really emphasized to keep her balanced, steady and soft. Dr. Cesar Parra- When I rode with Dr. Cesar, he had me working on my position just as much as much as we worked on Hazel s. We tweaked a few things in my basic position, and not only did it allow my position to feel better, but Hazel moved with more freedom. Dr. Caesar really concentrated on Hazel s positioning at the canter, with not letting her shoulders drop in the corner. I also practiced the exercise with extending and collected the canter with the goal of having her sit and lift her shoulders, and come up more from the back. Counter canter loops with flying changes also helped hazel to be lighter in my hand, and it also kept her straighter in her alignment. Patti Pierucci- When I rode with Patti, we focused mainly on Hazels alignment, and making everything I do more crisp and precise. With having Hazel straighter, it allowed her to flow forward without meeting the resistance of too much inside flexion! Straightness also helped us to have better corners, which hazel and I both have a tendency to cut. Patti also focused on my position, with really having me lift up in my chin, and keep my eyes up and focused on where I am going, and not look down at Hazel and lose focus. When I went to work on my pirouettes, Hazel was getting stuck and wanted to spin, so I was told to lower my outside hand, slightly lift more on my inside hand, and really bring her around more with my body. The change in my position was so little, but it really made a dramatic difference in the way that Hazel moved! SVDA General Membership Meeting Report 2009 The SVDA General Membership Meeting was held on November 7 th at the Fire Mountain Grill in Suffolk, VA. This looked to be the highest attended General Membership meeting in many years! It was great to see so many faces, both new and old members of all ages. The slate of officers was presented for 2010 as: President - Kathy Rowse Vice President - Robyn Nunnally Secretary - Amanda St. John Treasurer - Sean Owens Licensed Shows - Donna Rowland Clinics and Programs - Renee Hall Awards - Carol Gonyo Membership - Reeta Edmundson Scholorships - Sandy Johnson Newsletter-Carol Jordan Ways and Means Julie Spence Schooling Shows-Sarah Miller New Chairs to Be Added: Webmaster-Wendy Murray Jr Coordinator-Tristin Hardy Butler With an additional position of Jr Coordinator and splitting the Newsletter and Website into two separate positions. Voting information is available on the website and Wendy ed an easy voting link to the membership. Well known clinician Jim Koford was the very entertaining and informative speaker. Jim captivated the crowd with his insights on learned training technique s, show details, and his own personal narrative of his adventure s as a foreign rider who speaks a little German making his way on the European show circuit. Thank you to Jim for your time and insight. Submitted by Tristin Hardy Butler, SVDA secretary.
Top 10 Exercises to Become a Better Equestrian They say it takes seven falls to make a rider. But there's a lot more to it than that. Check out this humorous list of 10 simple exercises that will help you become a better equestrian. 10. Drop a heavy steel object on your foot. Don't pick it up right away. Shout, "Get off, Stupid, GET OFF!" 9. Leap out of a moving vehicle and practice "relaxing into the fall." Roll lithely into a ball and spring to your feet. 8. Learn to grab your checkbook out of your purse and write out a $200 check without even looking down. 7. Jog long distances carrying a halter and a carrot. Go ahead and tell the neighbors what you are doing - they might as well know now. 6. Affix a pair of reins to a moving freight train and practice pulling to a halt. Smile as if you are having fun. 5. Hone your fibbing skills: "See hon, moving hay bales is FUN!" and "No, really, I'm glad your lucky performance and multimillion dollar horse won the blue ribbon. I am just thankful that my hard work and actual ability won me second place." 4. And while you're at it, tell your friends there was prize money. The ribbon is just a traditional souvenir. 3. Borrow the US Army's slogan: Be All That You Can Be -- bitten, thrown, kicked, slimed, trampled, frozen Lie face down in a puddle of mud in your most expensive riding clothes and repeat to yourself, "This is a learning experience, this is a learning experience, this is.." 1. THE NUMBER ONE EXERCISE TO BECOME A BETTER EQUESTRIAN: Marry money.
December 2009 Ask the Expert Kathy Rowse Q: What is the purpose of the stretchy circle and what are judges looking for? I know that the directives specify: quality of stretch over back, forward and downward into a light contact while maintaining balance and quality of trot. But why is it that some judges don't mind if my horse comes a little behind the vertical, yet others penalize me for it. How low should the poll be? Does it matter if there is slack in the reins, or if my horse gets on its forehand? Sincerely, Uber-Struggling A: The Ideal Keep in mind that a stretchy circle must start by keeping the rhythm, tempo and balance that you have already established in your working trot. Frequently horses speed up, fall on the forehand and lose the inside bend. As the rider asks, the horse should lower and lengthen his neck, seeking the bit. We should see improved suspension and swinging in the back. The horse should maintain contact -- a loose or flopping rein is a tell-tale sign that the horse is not staying connected back to front. Think of the stretch in two ways DOWN as well as OUT. Some horses go down with the neck but not out as they curl behind the connection. More often we see horses that lengthen their neck but do not go down, in fact bracing against the bit or with a loose rein but no connection. As a judge, I don t use the terminology behind the vertical for the stretch circle. If the horse goes so low that his nose is down near his knees, he must bring his nose slightly in or he will go too much on the forehand. This may cause him to look slightly behind the vertical, but if you rotate the picture up around his axis, then his poll would be the highest point. This differs greatly from the horse that ducks his nose to his chest and avoids the contact. The Aids How do you get this ideal stretch? Many riders become fussy with their hands, incorrectly trying to see-saw the head down, but this makes the horse stiffen rather than relax. Begin by mentally checking your horse s balance, bend, suppleness and tempo in the working trot. Ask for the stretch with a softly suppling inside rein and allow the stretch by following with the outside rein. Add a little inside leg at the start to encourage the horse to take a more active step into your allowing reins. Add a little outside leg if needed to keep your horse turning on the circle. Think of the stretch occurring by increments. Each soft response that you achieve, add a little more leg to encourage additional stretch. At all times the horse is responding to pulsing of the legs and the giving of the reins to stay round and down until the rider chooses to pick up the reins again and establish a working connection. The final part is to incrementally retrieve the reins while maintaining the increased swing in the back. Exercises To help riders understand this stretch, I ask them to make trot-walk-trot transitions while stretching on the circle. This helps the rider to understand that they can still make half halts while stretching and encourages the horse to step through during the up and down transitions. If your horse hollows his back and disengages his hind legs, then you still have some work to do to further enhance your horse s basics.
