1 SVDA PRESIDENTS LETTER APRIL 2015 After a brutal winter, show season is amazingly upon us! Robyn and I thought it would be a good idea to review some SVDA schooling show entry policies and warm up ring etiquette. Remember you can enter up to 3 classes per horse (total of 3 even if you have different riders) but if the show fills up totally, then you will be given only 2 classes so it s always wisest to indicate your top 2 classes on your entry form in case we have to cut you back. Dressage equitation or suitability classes do not count in your 3 class limit. No telephone or entries can be accepted. You must have a signed entry form along with check and Coggins in to the show secretary before you will be scheduled. Please check your opening and closing dates on the SVDA website don t lose out by submitting late entries. Late entries will cost you extra money and if the show is full, a late entry will be turned away! We have a STRICT limit on the number of hours that a show will run so even if the show is at your barn it is wise NOT to wait till the last minute as we can t accommodate entries that will make the show run longer than 8 hours plus lunch and breaks. SVDA members are given priority when it comes to scheduling times; this is a good incentive to go ahead and renew your membership! Riders can make special requests on their entries (i.e., request times before noon) but you must understand that those requests may or may not be honored. Entry secretaries have many things to consider when scheduling a show and most of them will try to be very helpful with your special requests, however, you need to understand a special request may not be honored. We know stuff happens and sometimes you may not be able to show due to extenuating circumstances. However there is a NO REFUND policy after the closing date regardless of whatever horrible reason comes up (we know and appreciate terrible and unforeseen circumstances come up but there are no exceptions to this policy). If you feel that you have really exceptional circumstances - you can write a letter to me to present to the board to consider but it would be EXTREMELY rare to make an exception to this policy. For shows that are canceled due to weather, we will destroy your check. You must submit your Coggins when it is renewed but once you submit it we do keep it on file and you will not need to resubmit it until it is renewed in 12 months. It doesn t matter if the show is at your home farm we MUST have a current Coggins on file or you won t be allowed to compete. NO EXCEPTIONS to this state rule! 1 HALF-HALT APRIL 2015
2 ASTM approved head gear with appropriately tightened straps must be worn by all competitors English and Western, at ALL LEVELS, including FEI. ASTM approved head gear with appropriately tightened straps must also be worn by riders with any guest horses There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule for any reason. Anyone without properly fastened safety headgear will be eliminated from the show by the SVDA representative or asked to leave immediately (if not competing). This includes anyone from the barn they cannot be in designated warm up arenas without proper headgear. There is NO LUNGING in any ring where people are riding (ie: warm up arenas). Draw reins, German Martingales, illegal bits and other illegal equipment are NOT ALLOWED in the warmup area by competitors or noncompetitors. Protective ear coverings are allowed in all outdoor arenas. Protective leg wear for horses is allowed in the warmup but must be removed prior to entering the show ring. Your number must be worn at all times when your horse is being exercised. Coaches MUST stand OUTSIDE the warm up arena, anyone standing in the warmup arena will be asked to leave by the SVDA representative or the Ring steward. There is NO ALCOHOL allowed at SDVA Shows. If you have any questions or concerns while attending a schooling show, please address them with the SVDA Representative. Reps are there to ensure everyone follows the rules and they will be glad to answer questions, clarify a rule or otherwise assist you. Some of these rules may seem like SVDA is being overly controlling, but all these rules are made for the SAFETY of our members, all competitors as well as the liability of our club and of our board of directors and in line with our insurance requirements. We appreciate everyone s respect and compliance. Have a wonderful show season and I m looking forward to seeing wonderful results in our monthly newsletter! Kathy-President, SVDA Robyn-Vice President and Rules Person Extraordinaire, SVDA 2 HALF-HALT APRIL 2015
3 VADA 3/23/15 Meeting Minutes The meeting was called to order at 8:00 pm and was held via conference call. Present were Alison Head (NOVA), Jessie Ginsburg (NOVA), Alison Douglas (Central), Angela Stanaway (NE), Tina Longaker (C ville), Amanda Harper (Central), Robyn Nunnally (SVDA), Beth Rippel (SVDA), Susan Ellis (NEVADA), Sheli King (NOVA), Denise Lennon (Fredericksburg), Sherri Booye (C ville), Dianne Boyd (NOVA), Kathy Rowse (SVDA),Gardy Bloesmers, (C ville), John Nicholson (VHC), Gardy Bloemers (C ville), Nancy Lowey, (C ville) Nancy Lowey made a motion that we approve the minutes from the December board meeting. The motion was seconded by Denise Lennon and was passed unanimously. Treasurer s Report-Jessie reported that our balance is $157K. This includes all the expenses from the banquet and the expense of the ribbons for the fall show. VA Horse Center Report John Nicholson from the VHC (he comes from the Kentucky Horse Park) joined the call and reported the following: He thanked the club for our support for the center, specifically naming Gardy Bloemers, and the Winner s Circle Restaurant. He is very excited about the restaurant and how wonderful it will be. Financially the center is meeting with federal government officials and Rockbridge County. The County has approved the hotel tax extension, whose excess funds will directly benefit VHC. Capital projects will include footing upgrades, rings, and competitor arears, as well as infrastructure upgrades. The goal is to make VHC compete with world class facilities. He says we have served as an example of support from the horse industry- led by Gardy. He was very excited to announce that Leigh Anne Claywell has accepted the position of COO. She is well respected in the industry and bringing a wealth of knowledge. Gardy added that John has agreed to become the new executive director and is thrilled that the combo or John and Leigh Ann sends a really positive message about the direction VHC is headed. Gardy is a member of the executive board of VHC. She also reported that the Wiley and the area behind the grandstand (area we use for lunging) are being renovated after $55K in funds were raised. Region 1 Meeting Report- Tina reported that the Tryon, NC facility put a bid in for regional championships but it was not selected by the PM and GM delegates. We were awarded the BLM Championships for 2016 and NC got GAIGs. Finals will be in KY for Diane mentioned that we should be concerned about the push at the USDF convention to drive the nationals earlier in the year- putting the end date the first week in October. That doesn t work for us- means we would have to move to September. We should be prepared if this happens and would be tough working a new date with VHC. BLMs will be in NJ for 2015 and Dianne is interested in the feedback from how well that show works. Lisa Schmidt is in her last term as Region 1 director and will not be running again. VADA Fall Show-Dianne reported that she, Nancy Lowey, and Penny Hawes, have the sponsorship info up on our website. Please have your members go look and solicit sponsors. Tina has submitted the initial draft of the prize list to the USDF. Sweatshirts will be dark green. Banquet Wrap Up- Alison Douglas will work on date for next year, tentative is February 7 th. Alison will also contact Dover to see if they might have a special discount for our members who would like to shop after the banquet. Chapter Challenge Show- Amanda Harper will be manager with Susan Ellis co-managing. Betty Thorpe will be the judge. New Business- Kathy Rowse- L program- D1 session will be held at the VADA Nova April 4 -tt and 5 th Show. The next meeting will be held via conference call on Wednesday May 6 th 8:00 pm. The meeting was adjourned at 9:08pm. Respectfully submitted, Alison Douglas 3 HALF-HALT APRIL 2015

15 Bruno Greber Clinic Report By: Anna Schriebl On 21 March, Jamie Nicolato s Riders Crossing Farm hosted Bruno Greber as a clinician. Bruno is a certified Swiss Master Instructor and he coaches dressage, jumping, eventing and vaulting. He continues his studies under Arthur Kottas-Heldenberg, a former First Chief Rider of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. Bruno has also worked with Georg Wahl, Egon von Neindorff and Georg Theodorescu. Kindness and classical teaching were the order of the day and it was a joy to watch each rider transform under Bruno s expert eye. One rider held her hands a bit high and Bruno explained that by doing that, the rider only has access to the head. The neck and shoulder of the horse fall underneath the rein since they didn t go through the reins as they would if the rider held her hands about a fist above the withers. The reins should be a channel for the neck so a rider has access to the neck and shoulders and not just the head. Riders were encouraged to visualize and to ride the hind legs under the tummy and into the bridle. This helps them work towards asking their horse to reach for the bit. The turn on the forehand was used often for the riders to start talking all the horse s body parts and for acceptance of the inside leg and outside rein. One rider with a lovely young mare was advised to be sure and stay tactful in exposing the youngster to new things so she didn t get overwhelmed. Bruno stated that many young horses needed interesting work in order to let the physical work settle their young minds more. Some tips Bruno shared were: Don t sit over your hips but, rather, keep your hips in front of you. The horse should start the trot from behind and take you with him. The walk should be big, just like it is when the horse is turned out in the field. Train the bend and response early on so you are ready for the upper levels. Bruno also encouraged riders when communicating with their horses to think more of do this instead rather than don t do this. He explained to one rider that time with her horse not just riding time - was very important in order for the horse to begin to trust her. He changed this horse out of a double bridle into a snaffle and began ground work to encourage the horse to soften and begin to accept the rein. The horse changed from a nervous and upset one to a calm, more supple horse with Bruno s expert ground work. A big thanks to SVDA member Jamie Nicolato for bringing Bruno to our area. Riders Crossing Farm and and Patriot Farm will be partnering together to bring him back to the area in June. 15 HALF-HALT APRIL 2015
