Geometry Can Be Fun, or How to Earn Easy Points in a Dressage Test By Margaret Little Here are a few tips to help you not lose easy points in tests. Any horse, for example, can get a 10 on a halt. Riding a circle accurately can add at least a point to that movement. There is no reason to throw away these easy points! So let's get started, shall we? It will be helpful if you have a diagram of a dressage ring in front of you while you read. The USEF rule book is a good source. Note that the corner letters are 6 meters from the actual corner of the ring. When you are turning on to center line at the end of your test (one of the last impressions you leave with us judges!), you want it to be a half a 10 meter circle. That means you will still be on the long side as you pass the corner marker. 1 meter later, you will leave the long side. Now here's the trick - and the thing I see riders miss FREQUENTLY: you will touch the short side at the quarter line - and only touch it! Don't get stuck on the short side. That spot halfway from center line to the long side is often marked right on ring fence. We will talk more about tangent points later, but that's what this is. Don't get stuck on the short side - you will overshoot center line. Glance up at C (me!) as you turn to touch that quarter line spot - that will help keep you from getting stuck on the short side and over shooting center line. So now let s review an accurate 20m circle. First, it has no corners. Yes I know it seems odd to say that, but you would be amazed how many corners I see when judging 20 m circles at A and C. No excuse for that! I was taught to find tangent points 4 points I will touch no matter what then add bend so I m not riding a square. So let s make sure we get those circles at A and C right! We will assume for now that you are riding in a large or standard arena. So your circle starts at C, let s say, and you use your outside aids to NOT TOUCH the arena after C. Let s identify your next tangent point. The corner markers (K, H, M, and F) are 6 meters out from the actual corners. You ll want to touch the long side 10 meters out (and not before!). So for a circle right, your next tangent will be between M and R. R like all the other letters - is 12 meters from M. So 1/3 the distance from M to R will be 10 m. Remember 6 meters from corner to M + 4 more meters = 10 meters from the corner. Inside leg nudges the horse to touch there; outside aids and perhaps a little leading or opening inside rein gets him/her off the long side immediately afterwards. Next tangent point is on center line. Remember M + R = 18 meters, so you will want to cross center line 2 meters farther out than the line between R and S. My dear husband is 6 feet tall, so I picture him lying on center line with his feet on that RS line, his head toward A, and I don t want to step on his head (that would be a really bad thing!). Touch the long side 2/3 of the way from S to H, then LEAVE the long side so you don t go into the corner. If you really want to impress a judge, make it clear you know you are finished circling by staying on the short side from C to the quarter line. Even a Training or Intro level horse should be supple enough to make the corner from the quarter line. Obviously, if you re at a higher level, you should go more deeply into the corner. Let s close by mentioning one of the other places where riders throw away easy points the halt. Straightness, balance, etc. are beyond the scope of this article but counting is not! Once your horse has stopped, and you are as straight and balanced as possible, STAND THERE! Be happy! Any horse no matter its level of talent can get a 10 on a halt. But riders often hurry through them. At the show I judged just last weekend, I found myself several times preparing to say 8 or 9, but then the rider hurried off and threw away a needless point or 2. We judges have gotten so tired of this that on the last test re-write, the committee added a number: 3 for 3 seconds. That is the minimum time you should stand. It s now written right there on the test (yes the center column on the test sheet Directive Ideas is something you should definitely study!). Those are our first and last impressions of you your halts so why not make a great opening statement, and leave us with a positive final view? My only 10 as a rider (so far!) was on a halt no reason not to assume an 8 is the totally do-able minimum for anyone, most days. That 10, by the way, was on the same stallion who in his first show stood up on his hind legs at X while I was trying to salute Capt. Andy de Szinay. 10 is not perfect, so as we say in dressage - practice makes excellent! See you at C.

February Juniors Corner: Congratulations to all the Junior riders who received awards at the Annual Banquet Saturday, January 28 th. Thank you to everyone who assisted in setting up the banquet decorations and assisted with clean up afterwards. Specifically, I wanted to thank Raymond Penland Jr. and his parents, Emma Jensen and her mom Lynn, Winnie Swanson and her mom and my daughter Dahlia for putting in several hours to set-up and clean-up. Thank you, Rhea Matson, and Lynn Jensen for providing decorations. Thank you, Susan Cooke for helping set-up and clean-up even though she doesn t have a child participating in Juniors. Thank you, Lillie and Amelia for judging the costume contest. Also, thank you to Kathy Rowse, Carol Gonyo, Cookie Parsons and Donna Rowland for all the advice and assistance to get ready for the banquet and auction. Thank you to all who donated and bought items in the auction to support the SVDA Juniors team. The auction raised over two thousand dollars, which will go a long way to sponsor several junior/youth riders at the Region 1 Dressage Team Championships. Thanks to this event we have a great start to this year s fundraising. We are planning additional fundraisers to continue to raise money. I will post more information about fundraisers as soon as I have more information. One fundraiser that is coming up soon is a Yankee Candle Sale, I will post an online sales link onto the SVDA Facebook page and friends/family can purchase directly online. This is a great sale and 40% of the profits will come back to the SVDA Juniors team. The riding clinic with Nicole DelGiorno has been rescheduled to March 4 th and 5 th. We were able to get an additional day for this clinic so we can accommodate more riders. Please contact Emily Melick to get your placement in the clinic soon. This is an excellent low cost clinic for only $25 per ride. Charlene Jensen

Thoughts on Collective Marks, Part Two By Margaret Little In the first part of this article, we looked at the Gaits score, and both the USDF and USEF versions of the Impulsion score. Now let s move on to Submission. The USDF Intro tests have Submission (acceptance of steady contact, attention, and confidence). One of our jobs as riders is to develop quiet hands which are independent of the movements of our bodies. The horse s job is to accept said steady contact. So as I mentioned in Part One, we have to do our part so the horse can do his/hers! I will often give a higher score for Submission if the horse is not quite steady in an unsteady hand than I will a horse who is curling in away from a fairly steady contact. Inattentiveness is not scored as harshly at Intro Level as it might be at 2 nd level, since some distraction on the young or inexperienced horse s part is understandable. Likewise, if something truly unusual or frightening happens outside the ring, causing the horse to momentarily lose focus, I will often ignore that in the submission score. They are only animals, and their nature of flight before threats is just that nature. But I will take into account the overall impression that USEF s addition of the terms willing cooperation, harmony implies. USEF tests also include the concepts of straightness, lightness of forehand, and ease of movements in the parentheses after Submission. Those of you familiar with the Training Scale know that straightness is pretty far up the scale just before Collection, at the top. So applying the term straightness, in its strictest sense, to a Training Level horse would not be fair. But a Training level horse whose haunches are so far in that it s on 4 tracks, for example, cannot receive an 8 on submission, but it could receive a 6. Whereas a 2 nd level horse that is that crooked might get a 5, all other submission factors aside. Likewise with lightness of forehand : one of the instructors in one of my judges training programs responded heartily to my comment that a Training level horse was on its forehand, Of course it is! It s Training Level!. What she meant was that true uphill balance is not expected until First Level. The (rare) horse that exhibits that kind of balance at Training is going to get the 8 on that factor, while in 2 nd level, true collection is introduced, so a flat to downhill frame will put a horse at 4 or 5 for that portion. USEF tests have 2 rider scores now USDF Intro tests still have 3, adding an extra score for geometry. This is really the only place on the test where we are supposed to focus on the rider, so I sometimes have to think a moment about which good movements or faults were likely caused by the rider. It s a little challenging to focus on the horse through the whole test, then suddenly come up with observations on the rider at the end. The first rider score on both sets of tests is for position. USDF simply says keeping balance with horse, while USEF has more words to express the same concept. We can throw the horse off by sitting right or left - usually collapsing a hip so we slide to the opposite side. But the more subtle and persistent problems I see usually involve tipping forward so the horse has to hurry to get back under us losing its balance in the process or falling behind the motion. I am glad to see that the fad of leaning way behind the vertical has subsided to the relief of our and our horses backs! I think perhaps our focus on that fault at several judges forums may have made us more aware of the detrimental effect of that position on the horses balance. We watched videos in KY one year, showing how leaning back (we think to help our horses lighten the front end) actually drives them on to the forehand! The more common form of falling behind involves not swinging through with the hips, holding back with the midsection, so the horse does not come freely though its topline. All I can say is lessons, lessons, mirrors, lessons!

The next rider score (and last score on USEF tests) addresses correct and effective use of the aids. I like two of the words USEF uses to amplify that clarity and subtlety. If we are not clear, the horse cannot understand, which is not fair to him/her. And the horse should be trained to be responsive to light aids, so that those aids can be subtle. That is when we are dancing with our horses. There is some disagreement on how to score the rider when a horse has been very difficult during a test. We don t know sometimes if the rider has caused the misbehavior, thereby deserving a low score, or if we should give the rider a high score for handling a difficult situation well. If I see obvious nagging on the part of the rider, or aids that are so inconsistent as to make the hose angry, I will try to make it clear on the collective marks who the weak link is, by being more generous with my first three marks (the horse scores ) and marking the rider down on effectiveness. Accuracy is part of that last USEF score, but is a separate rider score at Intro. If you don t have access to a dressage arena for schooling, then spend enough time with a paper diagram of the arena that you know exactly where you are going. Square or oval circles, weaving center lines, and diagonals that start early/late and never reach the corner marker to end, are totally avoidable mistakes. Just the act of practicing reaching the corner marker at the end of a diagonal will require a better response to the inside leg for bending, and will result in a more supple horse. I hope you have found these observations helpful. Read your whole test before you compete not just the pattern, but the collective marks and the directive ideas column as well. Correct training will produce the picture we are all looking for as riders, judges, and spectators. See you at the shows!

New SVDA board member Charlene Jensen Junior Chairman We were incredibly fortunate to have Charlene Jensen step up to fill the Junior Chairman position this year. It is a big job that requires work all year long. Charlene started riding horses when she was 10 years old and has continued that love for 30+ years. She has done a bit of everything - including 4-H and AQHA for halter, showmanship, Western Pleasure and English Hunter/Jumper. As a teenager, she was a working student for her trainer, riding and assisting in training horses for English pleasure, western pleasure and hunter/jumper. But at that time had no formal experiences riding dressage. Charlene discovered dressage because of her teenage daughter Dahlia. She started riding dressage when they moved to Bridlewood Estates with a new horse, they wanted to approve his attention balance and suppleness. Charlene s immediate goals are focused around helping Dahlia improve her riding skills and enjoy equestrian events. Another goal is for her to buy her own horse this year and start riding again herself! This past summer, Charlene lost her beloved horse of 30 years. Clyde was an awesome friend and companion who saw her through many stages of life. Dahlia currently owns and rides Wyatt. He is a solid bay paint and looks like a quarter horse but, with many opinions about life in general. He is aptly named Hit the Snooze Button, because he can be a bit lazy but also opinionated about work. Charlene was very involved in 4-H growing up and she felt it helped with her horsemanship skills and equine knowledge. She felt that being more involved in SVDA would increase her knowledge about dressage and help the many SVDA juniors to do the same. She was looking for a volunteer position that would help her learn more about the dressage world and here is a BIG one! As a board member and specifically the Youth Chairperson, Charlene wants to continue to improve the opportunities to make this group be more inclusive and inviting to youth and junior riders of all levels or skill. As a kid in 4-H she always felt very welcome and that fostered a great feeling of comradery. She also learned a lot about horses beyond riding. She would like to help develop skills in the SVDA juniors and Young Riders that is about more than just about riding. She wants our SVDA Youth to have fun and learn the inner workings of barn management, horse management and explore other interesting areas within the equine industry. Charlene has started a month Junior Corner in our newsletter SVDA Is lucky to have Charlene on our board as the Junior chairman. We know it s a big job that requires organization, fund raising, innovation and a lot of hard work. Please help her by getting in your letter of intent and all your paperwork for the Youth Team championships on June 17 and 18 in Culpepper. Dates are MUCH earlier this year. Everything is in this March newsletter. Thanks for your dedication to our Juniors Charlene! It s one of the board positions that has a LASTING effect on the kids that you will work with!

VADA Meeting Minutes Boar s Head Inn Charlottesville, VA The meeting was called to order at 10:36 am. Present were Alison Head (NOVA), Alison Douglas (Central), Angela Stanaway (NE), Susan Ellis (NEVADA), Anne Draine (NE), Meredith McGrath (SWAVDA), Tina Longaker (C vlle), Judith Harroun-Lord (ShenVADA), Nancy Lowey (C ville), Sherri Booye (C ville), Robyn Nunnally (SVDA), Ellen Simonetti (ShenVADA), John Weir (ShenVADA), Jessie Ginsburg (NOVA), Penny Hawes (C ville), Beth Rippel (SVDA), Cody Armstrong (SWVADA), Marie Taylor (Central), Diann Carpenter (NOVA), Alison Thompson (VADAF), Sharnette Atkinson (VADAF) Anne Draine made a motion that we approve the minutes from the December board meeting. The motion was seconded by Alison Thompson, and was passed unanimously. Treasurer s Report- Jessie reported our combined balances are about 121K. This is the time of year when our balances are the highest because expenses for the banquet and show haven t come out yet. Purple Book- The book is finished and will be out at the end of the month. Chapter presidents will get extras for new members. Chapter Challenge- Will be held in the East Complex on August 26 th. The committee is finalizing judge. First choice is Sue Smithson. There was discussion regarding promoting the musical freestyle and possibly a stakes class. DAL- Nancy Lowey passed out sponsorship packets. We are integrating the sponsor opportunities for this show with CBLM. We still need a volunteer coordinator. Our new Region 1 director Tina Longaker reported that the Region 1 meeting will be held March 5 th at the Hassler s farm and we will be bidding on the 2018 GAIG. Election of the Board- Because of the by-laws, Alison cannot be President for 2017 but would like to remain on the board because of the DAL. Sherri Booye made the motion that was seconded by Penny Hawes that Tina Longaker be President, Alison Head be Vice President and Jessie Ginsburg and Alison Douglas remain in their current positions for the 2017 board. Tina, Alison, Alison and Jessie abstained from the vote and everyone else voted in favor. This did bring up discussion regarding the updating of not only the VADA by-laws but also those of chapters who have not done so in several years. There will be more discussion at the next meeting. Next meeting will be held via teleconference at 8 pm on March 8 th. The meeting was adjourned at 11:09 am. Respectfully, Alison Douglas
