9 Equine Movement Clinic by Ann Jacobson I attend the clinic Understanding Equine Movement to Realize Your Horse s Potential given by Jillian Kreinbring. The clinic was part lecture, part hands on demonstration held the second week of December. My interest in Biomechanics began through my career as a saddle fitter and carries over into my own riding. As I became more aware of how important Biomechanics are for the health and soundness of my horse and the impact it has on my own riding abilities, I began researching Biomechanics through reading and discussions with my instructor. While the importance of Biomechanics is undeniable, it can be intimidating to pick up a book by well-known Biomechanics experts such as Dr. Hillary Clayton or Deb Bennet to learn about it. At the clinic I attended, Jillian was excellent at breaking down information and demonstrating how each piece of the equine anatomy system impacts the whole body. The first concept presented was how to tell when a horse is in good balance. Jillian established that when a horse is standing in a neutral position, he is in good balance when the C-5 (5 th cervical vertebra) is within 4 inches parallel plain as the lumber-sacral (LS) joint. The LS joint aligns with the point of the hip. Why are the C-5 and the LS joint critical? They are critical because they are major pivot points in the horse s body. The C-5 is the biggest cervical vertebra because it has the most muscle and ligament attachments stimulating bone grown and the LS joint in line with the middle of the horse s hip. The C-5 is also where the spine transitions the S shape in the neck to curve the other way. Consequently, when the horse lifts it s back properly, the C-5 lifts changing the shape of the neck. When this happens, it appears that the neck telescopes out and the butt comes under creating a nice arch in the horse s body. As you probably know, Dressage at its core is how to train the horse to change its balance. As you progress up the level, the C-5 lifts higher in relationship to the LS joint creating a teeter totter affect with the horse s hind end coming under the body more. When this happens, this causes the withers to lift and the horse comes over it s back and engages its entire body from nose to tail allowing for more advance movements such as half passes, tempi lead changes, piaffes, passages, etc. Other concepts touch within the clinic: - included anatomy and the function of the equine head and neck -thoracic sling -anatomy of the back, thorax and abdomen -active muscles verse passive ligament system -the hindquarter -the significance of the Lumbo-Sacral joint -the mechanics of collection and balance. The study of biomechanics has been tremendously helpful to know how I am affect my horse s body and it is a way to become a better rider off the horse by expanding your knowledge. I encourage you to do you own research into the subject.

10 CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to SVDA member Cheryl Gaylord and Isabella WVF!!! Just when we thought the 2017 show season had come to a close, in comes fantastic news from USEF! 12 From the USEF website Know Your Treats: Some Natural Ingredients Can Cause Accidental Drug Positives by Glenye Oakford Dec 26, 2017, 3:00 PM EST If you like to reward your horse with edible treats, remember to be mindful of exactly what you re feeding: some natural ingredients, like honey and licorice, can cause an accidental drug positive. You may think something sounds familiar and benign, but you don t necessarily know what s in it, said Dr. Stephen Schumacher, DVM, chief administrator of US Equestrian s Equine Drugs and Medications Program. You know the plant, but you might not know what its active constituents might be. A variety of common and innocent-sounding ingredients can cause unexpected positives. Any tea extract can contain caffeine, even those that have been decaffeinated. Some honey can also contain caffeine. Poppy seeds can contain amounts of morphine that can be enough to trigger a positive. The forbidden substance eugenol occurs naturally in such foods as licorice, cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, and celery. Want to Be Sure? Call the Experts! Not sure about your treats? Call the Equine Drugs and Medications Program at , give them the complete list of ingredients, and they ll check it out. We don t want to discourage people from doing this for their horses, but you have to be careful, said Schumacher. We d rather educate than adjudicate! No question is too silly to ask just Photo Credit: Kim Russell Photo give us a call. If you submit a list, we can look at the individual ingredients and respond back to you.
