1 Piaffe & Passage VADA/NOVA, Inc. Newsletter February 2018 Volume 47 Issue As I look forward in the new year, I see many changes. We have new VADA/Nova Board members, who are enthusiastic and supportive, and who have skills to bring us forward in the uping months and years. I see members who are moving on from the Board, most notably, Barb Pickering. For those of you who do not know Barb, you probably recognize the name. She sends you membership cards, green books, and newsletters. She runs elections for awards and the Board itself. She collects your year end award packets and calculates placings. She is the Queen of Scoring at almost all of the Licensed shows. For the Board it is the end of an era. Many Board members have taken on pieces of Barb s respinsibilities, but she has made herself nearly invaluable. At any given meeting, the floor is handed over to Barb to cover newsletter issues, membership reports, information needed for the greenbooks and purplebooks, and any number of uping items that might need to be written up in the newsletter. As the new editor of the newsletter, I would like to thank Barb for everything she has done to help me take on this task. Between prize list formats, advertisement information, and contacts, Barb has given me every tool to succeed, and I will do my best to make her proud. I believe it es from her deep love of VADA/Nova. She has worked, tirelessly, for years to improve and support this club. From taking on more jobs, to volunteering at shows, to weling new members, I know she truly wants us to succeed. Barb will still be handling membership next year, so she will still be around, but I would be remiss if I did not thank her for all her hard work. Thank you Barb. I look forward to putting the newsletter together! Rachel Rice rrice@vadanova.org VADA is a USDF Group Member Organization. Their members are automatically USDF Group Members. 5 Spotlight on Sheryl Williams By Diann Landau This month we spotlight Sheryl Williams, the new Executive Director of the Equestrian Center. Sheryl has been involved with horses for many years, not least of which as the owner/manager of the now-defunct (and muchmissed) Rubicon Horse Trials. Sheryl grew up across the country, from California to New York, eventually settling in Maryland in the early 1980 s. She worked for Hewlett-Packard for 26 years, moving to Virginia in 1999 when she and her husband Eric bought Rubicon Farm in Lucketts. They sold Rubicon a few years ago; then Sheryl started working part time for in 2007, and now she s running the place! Sheryl and Eric now live in Taylorstown with their 3 horses and 2 cats, and she gets her horse trial fix at. Sheryl began riding in the early 1990 s in Maryland, taking a lesson at the Potomac Horse Center at the urging of a friend. She was hooked, and continued riding at Oatlands Stables in Gaithersburg where she met Robert Taylor, the Master of the Goshen Hounds. In Maryland she pursued Hunter/Jumpers, Horse Trials, fox hunting and trail riding. Sheryl has taken lessons from many top eventers, and has many memorable moments- not least of which was finally learning to sit the trot! Other moments include passing the Master three times on her first hunt (he was very tolerant of her error) and watching the Rubicon Horse Trials grow to be one of the most popular events in the area. She has enjoyed trail rides on her now- 30 year old off the track Thoroughbred, Wee Dram, and sitting quietly reading a book in the stall of her paint quarter horse, Doucement. He d been insecure and lacked confidence when she first got him, but after two months of her care he came to her and put his head in her lap, and has been her pal ever since. Sheryl is honored to be the Executive Director of and is looking forward to being involved with this special treasure in Loudoun County.
