1 VADA/Nova, Inc Newsletter Volume 40 Issue 7 July 2011 Halt at X Sponsors Save the Day On June 3-5, VADA/Nova ran its summer Dressage Show and the East Coast Selection Trials for the Markel/USEF Young Horse Championships. Despite early concerns about entry numbers based on the spring shows, this show turned out to be a huge success with enough entries to more than fill 5 rings and all the stalls at Morven Park. In addition to the usual fare, we added some open classes on Friday which proved popular and helped support the bottom line. We had a large number of young horses for the qualifier which made for enjoyable spectating. One horse even earned scores at our show high enough to qualify for the Championships at Verden and most of them will compete at the US Championships this summer at Lamplight all in all an impressive group of horses and riders! As I mentioned last month, as a Young Horse qualifying show, the June show was required by USEF rules to operate as a Level 4 show. Level 4 shows have some additional requirements, such as needing an R Technical Delegate and providing a free party for competitors and the USEF sponsors. Last year, we struggled a bit to fund the cost of these extras. This year, though, our sponsors saved the day. Through the generosity of our members and business associates as well as several area breeders and young horse specialists, we were able to fully cover the costs of the party. And these donations came in all sizes from larger donations from the platinum, silver and bronze sponsors to smaller individual class and high score sponsorships. Every level of giving helped the bottom line and was greatly appreciated by show management and the Board. It is generosity like this that helps us be able to bring you quality shows. In this newsletter, you will find a page thanking our sponsors and also advertisements for many of them with businesses. I would like to personally thank each of them for supporting not only VADA/Nova but the sport as a whole. And if you have a chance, thank them also. We have more shows to run and we can t do it alone. Alison VADA IS A USDF GROUP MEMBER ORGANIZATION. THEIR MEMBERS ARE AUTOMATICALLY USDF GROUP MEMBERS. 3 PRELIMINARY SUMMARY MINUTES VADA/Nova Board Meeting June 13, 2011 Morven Park Lounge The meeting was called to order at 7:35PM There were 14 Board members present and 4 excused. There was one guest. Minutes: The minutes from the May meeting were accepted. Treasurer s Report: The (unreconciled) balance in our special activities account is essentially unchanged from last month. The balance in our operational account (reconciled as of 5/30/11) is $55,815.53, but this includes much of the income but none of the expenses from the June show. June Show Report: The June show was a financial success, with a tentative profit of just over $15,000. At this point, this is a rough figure, as we have not received all income owed nor paid all expenses. We purchased a new judge s stand, which we will donate to Morven Park. In exchange, they will put a plaque on the stand recognizing VN as the donor and not charge us to use the other judge s stands. Our fundraising efforts for this show were quite successful, with the amount raised more than enough to cover the cost of the competitor s party. The show was very full, with all rings in use for the full 2 ½ days of the show, There were 189 horses and 432 rides down center line, There were 66 FEI rides and we had the largest Young Horse Selection Trial classes in the country, with horses coming as far away as Florida. Stabling was more than full, and the Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation graciously allowed us to use their stalls. The entire staff of Morven Park was very responsive and worked hard to make the facility look especially good for this important show. Membership: We currently have 363 members, 30 behind where we were last year at this time. We have 22 Junior and 341 senior members. We have 81 new members and 282 renewals. We had a 40% positive response to the we sent in February to last year s members who had not renewed. VADA News: VADA made a $10,000 donation to the Virginia Horse Center. In return, the show office will be named in VADA s honor. The Horse Center will also sponsor the competitor s party at the Fall Final s. VADA is also considering selecting a charity to be the recipient of the proceeds of the Chapter baskets auctioned off at the VADA awards luncheon. More discussion on this topic will take place at the next VN meeting (July11th) and at a VADA meeting in July. The meeting was adjourned at 9:10PM. Respectfully submitted, Michelle King (filling in for Diann Landau) Upcoming events: The Breed Show prize list will be submitted to USEF and USDF soon. Right now, we have 3 IBC classes (Individual Breed Classes) Hannoverian, Oldenburg & Andalusian/Lusitano. We would love to get more sponsored. We are doing pretty well with volunteers, but still need scorers and runners. We are also starting to get volunteers for the Youth Team show, but still need more. We will send out an e-blast, reminding people that this is a great opportunity for members to volunteer without interfering with their showing. Also, for the Youth Team show, volunteers can get VADA (State) volunteer credit, which is necessary to be eligible for VADA year end awards. We will have a licensed show committee meeting soon; Alison will work via to schedule it. The June schooling show at Compass Rose is very full with over 60 riders and 2 rings, one large and one small (for Intro and some training rides.) There is still a need for additional volunteers, including for ring set-up on Friday. Entries for the August schooling show at Looking Glass Farm are starting to come in and it is expected that the show will fill before the closing date. 3

11 Our July Member of the Month is Lise Katz. Lise started riding at the age of 6 and was a long-time member Member of the Month of the USPC in Pennsylvania. She earned her B rating through the USPC and evented through the Preliminary level. At the age of 18, Lise was a working student for Dressage rider Lorinda Lende and then went off to college, with her horse, Chrissy, to the University of Wisconsin. Lise later retired Chrissy (who is now 33 years old) and moved to Manhattan. After four years in the city and away from horses, Lise missed riding and decided it was time to move to northern Virginia. Shortly after moving, Lise purchased In Like Finn, a very green, registered TB/Paint gelding that was originally bred for barrel racing. Lise works at Freddie Mac as a project manager in Human Resource Information Systems. In between work and driving up and down Rt. 66 she rides and trains with coach Donna Gatchell. Finn and Lise are currently competing at the 3 rd and 4 th levels of dressage. In 2010 Lise and Finn were the 3rd Level Schooling Show Champions at the VADA/Nova Championship Schooling show last November. Lise most enjoys being a ring steward because it is where she can be a part of the action, watch the rides and interact with the competitors. It is a great opportunity to learn by simply watching. 15 The Best Hundred Dollars I Ever Spent by Trish Conk I'm genetically disposed as a non-shopper. I really don't like going to stores, malls, and even the grocery store requires an act of discipline (the family has to eat). A friend once described with enthusiasm a shopping trip to Trader Joes. I'm thinking, "Now when does that start to be fun?" Then there are tack shops and true confession. When I go in a tack shop, I almost have a case of "the vapors" and need to put a cold cloth on my head. I love tack shops, sales at tack shops, and buying for my horse. However, since I'm currently not printing money in the basement, I must choose wisely where to spend. Once when commenting on a particular horse item as "the best $100 I ever spent," a friend said I should write these down since I use that phrase a lot. So here they are, sans brand names. These products are made by several manufacturers. 1) California Blanket. This blanket has 100 grams of fill. There are several of these on the market. It is between a sheet and a medium. Haven't found anything more useful in blanketing my horse. Perfect for layering. About $115. 2) Rubber boots. These are based on the old Wellingtons (which are still sold). They support the foot, keep you warm and dry in the mud and snow, easy to put on and off. I paid $90 but looking in the catalogs, the price is up. Several choices. 3) Three step mounting block. Even the most vertically challenged can successfully mount from these. Why spend $65 on a two step? Three step is about $90-$115 4) Water containers. If you have hauled a full bucket of water at a horse show, you know you will never do that again. Water containers run 5-6 gallons each and are sold at Wal-Mart or any place where you get camping equipment. About $12 each. We'll call this the best $24 I ever spent. I bought two. 5) Muck bucket cart. This is kind of like the bucket of water. Hauling (dragging) a full muck bucket is literally a once in a lifetime experience. You won't do it again. Like water containers, a cart benefits those who lesson, clinic, or show away from home. It s $40-$80 depending on how fancy you want it. 6) Extra helmets. Now that we have our own farm and my daughter teaches, we are very focused on safety. We require certified helmets for all riders at all times while mounted. I found certified schooling helmets for $28. They can adjust to 3 different sizes. I bought two and now have a range of 6 sizes. They're not fancy but we're covered in case a helmet is forgotten or we have visitors. Two helmets are about $60. There they are! These are products where I truly got a bang for my buck and money was well spent. They have made my life easier. 15
