1 VA D A / N o v a, I n c. Volume 45, Issue 1 January 2016 Halt at X As we near the end of 2015, I am happy to report that VADA/Nova has had a very successful year. All our shows, both licensed and schooling, were well attended and ran without problems and our winter clinics provided diversion during what proved to be a long cold winter. Our volunteers again proved they are some of the best of any GMO anywhere and our entire Board worked hard to produce great activities for our members. As we move into 2016, I am very excited about things we have in the works. In addition to our usual show schedule, we have several educational events scheduled including our annual Judges' Roundtable for L grads and licensed judges, another exercise clinic with Debbie Rodriguez, a Fix a Test with S judge Heidi Berry in March before our first schooling show and at least one more winter clinic in the planning stages. Our licensed shows will now count for AQHA points and participate in the National Pony Cup program and will feature new high score awards for VADA/ Nova members. Additionally, stay tuned for details about some exciting team competitions at each licensed show. I'd like to welcome two new members to our Board : Debbie Marriott and Mary Callan are joining us while we sadly say goodbye to Laura Celia and Renee Carter (although both have promised to stay active with us). As your Board of Directors, we are committed to working hard to support Dressage in Northern Virginia. We appreciate your support and we value your input, so please don't hesitate to contact one of us with questions or thoughts or attend a Board meeting and see what we do. I hope to see many of you at our Annual Banquet on January 17. Meanwhile, let's hope this good weather holds. Happy Holidays to all! Alison VADA IS A USDF GROUP MEMBER ORGANIZATION. 3 SUMMARY MINUTES VADA/Nova Board Meeting Dec. 14, 2015-Morven Park classroom The meeting started at 6:45 p.m. There were thirteen members present with one excused. Our two new Board members attended as guests. The November minutes were approved by the Board. Treasurer s Report: As of 11/30 the balance in the regular account was $ 94, Newly elected Board members were welcomed by Alison. These are Debbie Marriott and Mary Callan. Licensed Show Committee: The Licensed show committee meeting notes were discussed. The show schedule for 2016 was presented. For 2016 VADA/Nova will be participating in the AQHA and National Pony Cup programs, but not the TIP (Thoroughbred) as the requirements of this program were too onerous on the show secretary. Several policy changes were discussed. There will be Rule Changes implemented in 2016 from both the FEI and USEF. Some of these are: Insulated/ noise cancelling ear bonnets will be permitted, in all competition rings, including indoors. FEI tests will now have a different error scoring system: - 2% for the 1 st error, Elimination for the second error. There will be another system for the Junior/Young Horse/Childrens tests. The USEF scoring changes won t change for now. More information to follow. The September Licensed show will be held Sept at Morven Park. It will be a BLM Qualifier and we will look at a variety of ways to promote this as a GMO/BLM focused show, including possibly a GMO Team Competition. The Committee is working on more details to flesh out this idea. Election of Officers: The current Officers will remain. Membership: As of 12/13/15 there were 130+ members, up from this time last year! Volunteers: It was discussed that volunteers at all of our shows and activities should have to sign a waiver and provide emergency contact information, to be kept on file with volunteer managers. Or the volunteers can bring them to the shows, filled out in advance. Details to be worked out Banquet: Sheli said that details are falling into place. There are still some volunteers needed to help with the Silent Auction. Awards are coming in, ribbons have been ordered, some raffle baskets are arriving as are items for the Silent Auction. The Above & Beyond gifts for Volunteers were decided on by the Board. Michelle Lachner asked the board to approve her budget for these. Clinics: Alison is working out details for clinics for There will be a Judges Round Table on Monday Feb. 15, We hope to have another fitness clinic given by Debbie Rodriguez- dates to be determined. In conjunction with the March Schooling show, there will be a Fix-a-Test on Saturday March 19. (see page 19 in this issue) Meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Diann Landau Feeling Inspired? Would you like a good excuse to get together with family, friends and barn mates, have some fun, and at the same time help support VADA/Nova? If so, please consider creating and contributing a basket to be raffled off at VADA/Nova s annual banquet. Prizes will be awarded for the most popular and most original baskets and all proceeds will be used to enhance VADA/Nova s 2016 programs and activities. This has been a very popular feature at the banquet each year and we ve seen some very creative ideas. Let s keep it going! Interested??? Please contact Sheli King at amking91@verizon.net to let her know you will be participating or if you have any questions. Back by popular demand! Once again we ll be offering a fitness clinic with Debbie Rodriguez. As this issue goes to press, all the details are not quite in place but we re looking at either March 5 or 6. This year we hope to divide the clinic into 2 sessions- 1. a basic session for those new to fitness or those dealing with physical limitations 2. a more advanced session We should have a flyer posted on our web site in early January as well as in the February P&P. 3

4 VADA/Nova s member of the month for the month of Member of the Month January is Sally O Dwyer. Sally has been a member of VADA/Nova for five or six years. Currently she lives in McLean and works at Catholic Charities as the Director of Volunteers. Originally from California, Sally began riding western as a young child. Her first horse was a Shetland pony her parents gave her when she was 6 years old. Although the pony s name was Angel, Sally attributes any skills she has that help her stay in the saddle to dear Angel, who she came off of plenty of times! After taking some time off Sally started riding again as an adult when her youngest daughter started pony club. Although her daughter later decided she was not interested in continuing pony club, Sally continued riding. Her current horse and love is an OTTB--Off the Track Thoroughbred named "George". According to Sally, George is a terrific little chestnut with a wonderful thoroughbred mind-- super willing with the desire to please, making him a great partner to learn on. Currently Sally trains with Linda Konigsberg and boards her horse at Blue Top Farm in Nokesville. When not riding, Sally is an avid gardener, and enjoys spending as much of her free time outside as possible. Aside from horses, she also loves dogs, cats and birds. When volunteering for VADA Nova, Sally s favorite position is that of ring steward as it gives her an opportunity to interact with the competitors and wish each rider a good ride. USEF Equine Vaccination Rule Lexington, Ky. - In January, the USEF Board of Directors approved an addition to the rule book, which outlines equine vaccination requirements at licensed competitions. Beginning Dec.1, 2015, all horses entering the grounds of a Federation-licensed competition must be accompanied by documentation of Equine Influenza Virus and Equine Herpes Virus (Rhinopneumonitis) vaccinations within six months prior to entering the stables. Due to several high profile Equine Herpes (EHV) outbreaks in recent years that have involved the neuropathic strain of the virus (equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy-ehm), some competitions have placed vaccination requirements on their competitors that go beyond most accepted medical opinions and raise concern that unnecessary requirements can potentially put a horse at risk. The intent of this rule is to ensure that all licensed competitions comply with the vaccination guidelines for Equine Influenza and Equine Herpes (Rhinopneumonitis) published by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). These guidelines are reviewed by infectious disease experts regularly, and recommend vaccinating competition horses at six-month intervals for both equine influenza (flu) and rhinopneumonitis (EHV-1 and EHV-4). There is not a vaccine that protects against EHM. If you have questions regarding GR845 please contact the USEF Drugs & Medications Dept. at medequestrian@aol.com or

Present were Alison Head (NOVA), Jessie Ginsburg (NOVA), Alison Douglas (Central), Angela Stanaway (NE), Tina Longaker (C ville), Robyn Nunnally (SVDA), Beth Rippel (SVDA), Susan Ellis (NEVADA), Sheli King (NOVA), Sherri Booye (C ville), Dianne Boyd (NOVA), Kathy Rowse (SVDA), Debbie Howard (Central), Anne Draine (NE), Tracey Smith-Oliver (SWVADA), Amanda Harper (Central), Judith Harroun-Lord (ShenVADA), Sandy Johnson (SVDA) Beth Rippel made a motion that we approve the minutes from the August board meeting. The motion was seconded by Sheli King and was passed unanimously. Treasurer s Report- Jessie reported via that our balance is $180K but we will have expenses coming out for year-end awards and the banquet. Fall Show Update and FOHA Donation- There is no final show report for finances. FOHA- We are donating $1000 to FOHA from donations from Sheli King and Kem Barbosa, collections during the show, and a contribution from VADA of show fees. Sheli made the motion. It was seconded by Anne Draine and passed unanimously. Dianne reported that we had over 430 horses- one of our largest shows ever. The show ran smoothly and was well received. Chapter Challenge Show- Sheli made the motion, it was seconded by Alison Douglas to approve NOVA as host chapter and was passed unanimously. Date will be August 7 th, a Sunday. Show will be open to non-vada members if space is available who will not be on the VADA teams and will be a two ring show. Nonmember fees for classes will be higher. Clinic for Suggestion was made for a L program freestyle clinic. Committee formed of Jessie Ginsburg, Kathy Rouse, Alison Head, Anne Draine, Tina Longaker, and Amanda Harper. Region 1 Meeting report- The Charlottesville chapter is interested in hosting the Adult Team in 2016 at the Charlottesville show in August. This would state volunteer hours and will be voted on at the next regional meeting. VIP Awards- We need a new coordinator for looking for volunteers and we need responses you don t have to be on the board, counts for volunteer hours but we need a new person by the time we publish the Purple Book for next year i.e. shortly.. New Business- Tracy Smith-Oliver discussed a clinic geared towards JR-YR for next year. The proposal would include an event rider because most of their juniors prefer to jump. Any JR-YR committee members from other chapters, please contact her. The next meeting will be held via conference call on December 16 th at 8 pm. The meeting was adjourned at 9:22 m. Respectfully submitted, Alison Douglas The Official VADA/Nova Show Hotel and generous sponsor of VADA s L Program Discover this full-service Leesburg, VA hotel- the perfect venue for meetings, weddings and social events as well as the ideal place for your out of town guests. 726 E Market Street, Leesburg, Virginia, Phone: 703/ Fax: 703/ Toll Free Reservations: VADA/Nova members can receive a 5% discount on online purchases. 25 VADA BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS 12/16/15 The call started at 8pm. The following board members participated: Alison Head, Jessie Ginsburg, Sheli King, Alison Thompson, Angela Stanaway, Susan Ellis, Jane Palmer, Tina Longaker, Meredith McGrath, Ann Draine, Sandy Johnson, and Robin Nunnley. Also participating were Dianne Boyd and Kathy Rowse. Sheli moved that the minutes from the last meeting be approved, Jessie seconded, and all approved. Jessie reported that we have a bank account balance of $171, This reflects almost all activity from the fall championship but no activity from the banquet and related activities, such as year-end ribbons and awards. Fall Show: Alison shared the survey results from the competitors at the show. Most negative comments were related to the facility and are things we cannot control footing, the sound system (particularly in some of the barns) and lights staying on all night in the barns. Dianne shared this information with the Horse Center Staff, which they appreciated. The revised P & L Statement from the show reflects a profit of approximately $35,000. This reflects a sizeable increase in the facility fee. Stabling increased $5 a stall a night and we used many more stalls than in the past, and the labor rate for the EMTs & Security went up $2/3 per hour, and again, the show ran longer than in the past. Dianne attended the annual managers meeting and said that it was very positive. The current management team at the Horse Center is very focused on upgrading the facility, to make it stronger and more viable. Among other things, they are really paying attention to a number of deferred maintenance items. Dressage at Lexington: Alison reported that the contract to purchase the show is almost complete, and payment will be made in 2 parts, the first being due Jan. 8 th. The contract is contingent on the transfer of the license by USEF. Chapter Challenge: The show will be Sunday August 7 th at Morven Park, with VADA/ Nova serving as the lead chapter. Sheli & Alison will be co-managers and Alison Douglas will be the secretary. The show committee recommended hiring Jan Conlon and Cathy Tucker-Slaterback as the 2 judges and the board agreed. Meredith will contact them to tell them to save the date and Alison will get contracts out to them, and will also work on the contract with Morven. Sheli will begin work on the prize list and the committee will work on the ribbon order, to take advantage of the Hodges sale. Banquet: All is coming along. The board approved the awards that Jessie recommended. Anyone with items for the silent auction should fill out the bid sheet in advance and let Alison D. know so she can add it to the spread sheet. USDF Convention: Alison reported on the convention, including the decision to keep the National Finals in Lexington KY until the western regions & the Executive Board agreed on a suitable Western facility. Alison also talked about a number of significant rule changes likely to be approved after the USEF meeting in January, so all chapters holding licensed shows need to be on the lookout for these. Misc: VADA Fredericksburg asked and was granted permission to use the VADA Conference call account for their Board meeting on Jan. 12 Alison set up a committee to work on issues connected with running Dressage at Lexington and also tasked the group with coming back to the Board with a recommendation on whether or not to bid on a fall championship in Alison, Dianne, Tina, Sheli, and Alison Douglas will be on the committee. The next VADA meeting will be held on January 27 th at 8pm via conference call. The meeting adjourned at 9pm. Respectfully submitted, Sheli King for Alison Douglas 25
