Treasurer s Report: Regular account: $44, Savings acc t: $35, Middleburg Bank acc t: unchanged Membership: Barb said there were 110 members as of today, 12 having paid through PayPal. She handed out an account of the newsletter costs for the past 2 years. Sheli seconded the motion and the Board approved it unanimously. Michelle was authorized to purchase the Above & Beyond gifts to be given out at the Banquet. for the June Show, and almost all the judges have been contacted. The April and June shows have been approved as 2017 FEI World Breeding Championship Qualifying Competitions. VADA/Nova will not be hosting the 2017 Youth Team show, which will instead be held in conjunction with the Licensed show in Culpepper run by Rosinburg Events in June. Since it will be part of a licensed show, and not a stand-alone event, the competition will have a different structure. Winter Educational Programs: the Board discussed some ideas for the Winter educational programs. There will again be a Judges Forum. There also may be a Volunteer/Scribing Clinic in March, a possible Trailer Safety clinic and/or a Biohazard clinic. These will be discussed further. The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted Diann Landau, secretary Banquet & Silent Auction: Debbie & Sheli are going to meet at the storage facility to get all the banquet supplies. Debbie is meeting with River Creek Country Club to go over the final details and confirm information. She will send out an e-blast to remind people to send their RSVP s to Diann Carpenter. So far Kelly has 21 items for the Auction; more are needed. Sheli will send out the tax letters for the Banquet Auction donors. Board Officers for 2017: The officers are: Alison Head- President, Diann Carpenter- Vice President, Dilly Jackson- Treasurer, and Diann Landau- Secretary. Schooling Shows: The Board discussed any changes with prize lists so that all information can go to the Green Book editor. There will be a column added to secretary s spread sheets for Coggins information since this is required by the VA Department of Agriculture and there has been a problem with illegible or incomplete copies of horses Coggins. Licensed Shows: The management teams are being finalized. Alison has the contracts for the temporary stalls My cat, Koa, sitting guard over the box with the year end award packets. 6 It is Time to Get Creative! Create What? Baskets to be raffled off at VADA/Nova s annual banquet Need Ideas? Baskets take on a personality of their own. You could donate a Coffee Lovers basket filled with a great coffee mug, selections of coffees, some cookies or scones, a gift card to Starbucks. A Wine Lovers themed basket could contain bottles of some of your favorite wines, lovely wine glasses, a tasting for two at a local winery. You could create a basket in Tribute to your Farm or Trainer containing items that have the barn colors, perhaps a gift certificate for a lesson with the trainer or maybe schooling passes for rides at your barn (if allowed). What about a basket that contains items that help you Survive the Winter (hand warmers, cocoa mix, a hat, scarf or gloves, ear warmers, socks). A Movie Night themed basket might contain popcorn, napkins and bowls, perhaps tickets to a local movie theatre or a great DVD. So let your imagination roll! Do I have to do this Alone? No, this is a wonderful opportunity to get friends and barnmates together and have some fun. Each person could contribute one or two items in the basket and before you know it you have your basket filled with goodies. Is it Popular? Yes! This is a very popular feature at the banquet each year and we ve seen some fun, creative and highly desired baskets. And, don t forget, prizes will be awarded for most popular and most original. Not Going? Even if you are not going to be able to attend this year s banquet, we would love to have your support. Remember, this is a fundraiser for VADA/Nova so donations are greatly appreciated. All proceeds will be used to enhance VADA/Nova s 2017 programs and activities. Would Like to Help, but Don t Have Time? No problem. We would be glad to fill a basket on your behalf. Just contact Debbie Marriott and she will be your personal basket shopper! Questions? Contact Debbie Marriott (703) , Marriottdq@aol.com with any questions, to let her know that you will be donating a basket or to arrange basket pickup if you are unable to attend this year. We need your help. Please consider donating a basket! VADA/Nova s Member of the Month for January is Member of the Month Jerrilyn Wueste. As a child, Jerrilyn had always wanted a horse. Her family, however, opted for a boat and a summer house at the New Jersey shore, so water skiing became her primary sport. As an adult, her activities included downhill skiing, training her Doberman Pincher to AKC Utility Dog status, raising two parrots and beginning hunter jumper riding lessons. Horses finally became an ongoing part of her life after her son entered graduate school, and Jerrilyn moved to Washington State. The first horse she purchased was an Arabian mare. Urged by friends to try dressage, Jerrilyn moved on to an Appendix Quarter Horse mare that she competed successfully in recognized shows for a few years before finding her exceptionally talented Bavarian Warmblood gelding. One of her favorite memories is when they were a demonstration pair at a USDF Region 6 Adult Amateur Symposium with Walter Zettl. Currently, she owns a 16.2h Dutch Warmblood mare that she competed lightly in Region 5 when she lived in Colorado, and hopes to begin to compete again this year in Region 1. Jerrilyn has been an educator, has held executive positions in industry and health care and has served on the boards of directors of numerous non-profit organizations, most recently as VP of her homeowners association. She and her husband have lived with their Eclectus parrot Cody in Winchester, Virginia for two years, and operate a management consulting business. When serving as a volunteer for VADA/Nova, Jerrilyn enjoys being a scribe and a ring steward. We are thankful that we have Jerrilyn as a VADA/Nova member. submitted by Donna Gatchell 6 Jerrilyn and Sydney

16 Again the early-morning sun was generous with its warmth. All the sounds dear to a horseman were around me - the snort of the horses as they cleared their throats, the gentle swish of their tails, the tinkle of irons as we flung the saddles over their backs - little sounds of no importance, but they stay in the unconscious library of memory. 18 VADA Teleconference November 11, 2016 The Meeting was called to order at 7:05. Present on the call were Alison Head, Tina Longaker, Jessie Ginsburg, Beth Ripple, Nancy Lowey, Meredith McGrath, Anne Drane, Dianne Boyd, Angela Stanaway, Nancy Doody, Penny Hawes, Jane Palmer, Sharnette Atkinson, Kerry Lynn Corry, Robin Nunnley, Kathy Rouse and Sheli King Anne Draine made a motion to accept the minutes of the last meeting, which was seconded by Tina and approved. Treasurer s Report: Jessie stated we had a balance slightly in excess of $124,000 and that our 2015 tax return had been filed. October Show Report: Tina is working to finalize the show financials, and has an additional amount of approximately $9,000 in deposits to post. Without the numbers being finalized or closely reviewed, it appears that we have a tentative profit from the show of approximately $22,000. Emily Nelson will take on the role of volunteer coordinator at the fall show beginning in 2017 and spent much of the 2016 show shadowing Holly, who was doing that job for the last time in Emily will have very big shoes to fill but we are very excited to have her as part of the team and know she will be a great asset to the show. Based on the show financials, we then discussed making some donations. Sheli explained how the dog show FOHA fundraiser was set up, with both her and Kem Barbosa each making $100 donations to FOHA. Another $91 was collected from the audience during the dog show, and Sheli moved that VADA add to that amount to make the donation total $500. Nancy Lowey seconded the motion and the Board approved. A donation to the Horse Center was then discussed and Sheli moved that we donate $1,000 to the footing maintenance fund, unless another specific need of more interest is identified, Beth Ripple seconded the motion and it was approved. Dressage at Lexington: Dianne gave a report and stated that she felt that the transition to VADA management was moving along well. All major positions have been staffed, with the exception of the volunteer coordinator. The Nancy Lowey and Nancy Doody will again handle sponsors and vendors and Martie Healy will maintain the show s website, at least for The license for the show has been transferred and Alison Head and Penny Hawes worked on a press release, which Penny distributed. One need we have for this show is some additional major sponsors. Banquet/Silent Auction/Year End Awards: Alison Douglas was unable to participate in the call, so Alison Head will chat with her about the banquet and Tina will get the info she needs from her to put it up on the Website. Jessie has been coordinating the year end awards, and everything is in order on that front. Penny has worked with Mary Riesch, MKR designs to set up a logo wear shop so people earning VIP Awards can do their own ordering. Penny will work with Mary to design a system to let people who order items know that their order has been received. The Chapter Challenge: We discussed the possibility of holding it in Lexington again. Alison will check their availability and then Meredith can convene a conference call of the committee to begin planning the show. Misc. New Business: We will look at the Shel Gafford nomination information material to see if we can tweak it so as to ensure we get sufficient information on all nominees to allow members to make informed decisions when they vote. Alison has been President for 4 years and under the VADA By -Laws, she cannot serve again in There was some discussion of whether the by-laws could be amended as it seems very important to have continuity of leadership as we take over running Dressage at Lexington for the first time. Alison will send out the by-laws for everyone to look at and think about the issue. All chapters were asked to provide items for the GMO Basket that VADA brings to the convention. Any chapter with items to provide should send them to Alison as soon as possible. The next meeting will be on December 14 th at 8pm via conference call. Respectfully Submitted, Sheli King for Alison Douglas 18
