1 VA D A / N o v a, I n c. Volume 42, Issue 8 August 2013 Halt at X Last weekend at Dressage at Lexington, Remarkable and I attempted our first Intermediare II tests. The scores were acceptable but not great, but I was pleased enough because it is a big jump into the "large tour" that many horses can't make. At least he seems to have the skills to compete at that level. After the test, I texted my friend and coach with the outcome and ended my text by commenting that I really loved my "imperfect little horse". How true that is. Not that any horse (ok, maybe Totilas) is perfect really, but how many of us ride horses with quirks, past "interesting" histories, physical challenges, and things they do well and things they really don't? Probably all of us. And truly that is part of the fun, isn't it? To see where we can take our horses despite the challenges? And our successes often are personal. We may not always win the most obvious awards, but we each have our own set of goals and someone's 60 percent at a new level may be as important as winning the high score award at Grand Prix. Remarkable, for example, has always been headstrong. As a youngster being backed (I found this out after we bought him), he had a serious bolting problem and a reputation for dumping riders. At each stage of his training, he has told me he knows better than I do. Very clearly. And for years, he continued to wheel and bolt when another horse came toward him, making warm up at shows an experience. To this day, he remains feisty and strong, always making me earn my rides. But he also seems to enjoy the process - his stall is by my main cross ties and he nickers to me all day until I finally take him out to work. That alone is reward for me. We are partners, even though we don't always see eye to eye. So, our outing at Lexington got me thinking - we should remember that even if at times others get the glory and the big prizes, or compete at a higher level than we do, we should always keep our own goals and accomplishments in mind. Others may not know them and the judges certainly don't, but at the end of the day only we can evaluate if we have met our goals or not, and decide what is the next challenge. For me, it's those darned 1 tempi changes and piaffe and passage with much more lift and activity. Oh and getting through one entire test without being told by my horse that I clearly have gotten the test wrong and really intended (insert movement here) rather that what I tried to do. Yeah, well, dream on Enjoy every day with your horses! Alison VADA IS A USDF GROUP MEMBER ORGANIZATION. THEIR MEMBERS ARE AUTOMATICALLY USDF GROUP MEMBERS. 3 SUMMARY MINUTES VADA/Nova Board Meeting July 8, 2013 Morven Park Lounge The meeting commenced at 7:15 p.m. There were twelve Board members present and four excused. There was one guest. The June minutes will be approved via by the Board since they hadn t been sent out to the Board members in time. Website: Jacquie said the site is quiet now but getting more FB likes all the time. She would like members to send her pictures to add to our FB page. The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Diann Landau Treasurer s Report: Dilly reported that as of 6/30/2013 there was $75, in the Regular account, and $ in the Special account. Licensed Shows: Dianne Boyd reported on the June Show. The Prize Lists for the Breed Shows and September performance shows have been submitted to USEF and USDF and the entries for the Breed show are open. Equestrian Entries will now do direct deposits to our account instead of holding on to checks which will get us our money more quickly and avoid any problems that can arise with mailing checks. A Young Horse TOC class has been added to the September show. Some all-breed organizations are now offering Young Horse Year End Awards, and adding this class may help those trying to qualify for those awards. Dianne is still getting a ring-cleaning day organized before the Youth Team show, and has been in contact with some of the local High Schools to try to recruit students who need community service hours. Volunteers are signing up for the Youth team show. There will again be a Friday night competitor s party at Morven, with pizza and entertainment. Schooling Shows: Jessie reported that the June show at Frying Pan Park made money, and that the show went very well. Heidi Berry & Brandi Benedict said that they would like to run the show again next year. Thanks! Clinic: The Jacquie Brooks clinic was excellent! It was too bad that there weren t more applications for rider spots and especially more auditors, but those who attended all raved about Jacquie and she clearly helped everyone who rode. Several professional riders attended and were very pleased. Jacquie was very down-to-earth and approachable, and gave every rider good information to take back to practice. Jessie moved to bring her back for another clinic; Alison seconded and the Board approved this motion unanimously. Membership: Barb reported that there have only been 3 new members added since last month, and that we re 15 members behind last year s count. We have 344 members as of 7/8/

8 Straightness, balance, power, and the pivot leg a clinic with Jacqueline Brooks by Candy Allen You know that Washington Post catch phrase, if you don t get it, you don t get it? Well, for those of you who did not attend the Jacquie Brooks clinic, that s the case. It was a great clinic. Jacquie was fun, the clinic informative, and we got to see some great rides. Sorry you missed it. I will try to impart what I learned; I just can t add eh? to the end of my sentences with the same Je ne sais quoi that the Canadians do! There were horses and riders from all levels. Regardless of the level, Jacquie worked basically on the same thing applying it appropriately for the level of the horse and rider. Straightness and balance: the two things that most of us see as comments on our tests: You know, haunches to the inside, needs more uphill balance, on the forehand, -- those comments. She started with a few explanations straightness is achieved by straightening the outside of the horse using what she calls a stiff outside rein. For lateral balance the horse uses predominantly one hind leg usually, but not always, the inside. In lateral work the balance leg is the leg that a horse bends around. This Jacquie refers to as the pivot leg. (NB: while using the word pivot Jacquie does not mean the horse actually pivots on one leg it is the leg the horse bends around and balances with while traveling laterally. In leg yields the horse uses the outside hind to balance but since it does not turn around it, she doesn t consider it the pivot leg.) To help the horse and rider find the pivot, or balance leg for lateral work (shoulder-in, half pass, pirouettes as well as corners and circles) she asked riders to turn the horse s head to the outside, push the haunches in, and then flex the poll toward the inside while keeping a stiff outside rein. Add a bit of power to the outside of the horse with your leg and the horse turns around the pivot leg turning this exercise into a rudimentary turn-on-the-haunches. Once straight and balanced she asked us to add bend by adding an opening inside rein and some inside leg the turning neck and shoulder -- very important that it be both -- thus executing a true pirouette to be performed at the walk, the trot (yes, trot!), and the canter. If the horse is not straightened and balanced before you bring the poll in, the neck bends, the shoulder will pop out and cause the horse to lose balance. Jacquie maintains that, it s not a matter of how to prevent losing balance, but how fast you can regain it once lost. Becoming efficient at this exercise and getting the horse to respond quickly to those aids allows you, even during a test, to quickly find straightness and balance and thus regain the quality of the ride. The abovementioned pivot leg-seeking exercise helped us recognize the role each side of the horse (and rider) played in the various movements we require of them. Basically, inside for balance, outside for straightness and power. Saturday most of the lessons were spent introducing these concepts and practicing the turn on the haunches-like movement, adding bend while maintaining straightness, and some work on rider position, and the position of the horse s head and neck. She likes the poll high, with the neck as long as possible. She explained that the hind legs step up to the front, so if the front legs aren t light they can t get out of the way. Riding with a low, short neck doesn t allow the front to reach up and out and then the hind leg can t come under allowing the horse to carry himself behind. Then she checked to be sure everyone was sitting up; possibly a bit further back than they are used to, with hands out in front of them so they weren t pulling the horse down on to its front legs. Sitting back made sure we were able to balance the horses on to their hind legs achieving longitudinal balance in other words, uphill. Think of sitting in a chair with your reins attached to a board in front of you. If you pull to get the horse round it will tip the chair forward on to its front legs, the forehand, if you sit back, just hold the reins and push forward the chair will shift back on it its hind legs. Interesting visual, eh? On Sunday, all these great thoughts were put into practice. Everyone worked on exercises relevant to their level of training: leg yields, flying changes, half passes, passage, and transitions within and between gaits. Before starting any exercise Jacquie made sure the horses were 8 Candy and Echo

9 straight and asked us to quickly find the pivot/balance for just a brief stride or two. As she repeatedly pointed out, without straightness there is no balance, without balance there is no quality. Once the horse is balanced and straight the outside of the horse is freed up and this is the power that allows the horse to go forward with more expression. Echo and I worked on half passes and flying changes. I was told to straighten him with my outside rein, quickly find the pivot leg, then bend him making sure that his poll, neck and, very important, his shoulder were positioned to the inside. Once I felt Echo was balanced in this bending position, she told me to ride the outside to create the power to move the horse into the half pass, and voila! The work on the changes was very interesting. Friesians, you may have noticed, make great leaps when changing. Echo is no exception. These leaps cause him to lose his balance and then leap again to try and regain it. Jacquie had me do the pivot exercise right before asking for the change, ask for the change and immediately do it again in the new direction. Lo and behold, Echo changed without leaping into the air, then landed and was able to balance..and the changes smoothed out. Obviously in a test I can t do a whole turn to find his balance but with practice just the brief application of the aids will help to re-balance him. I think VADA/Nova does an excellent job of finding clinicians that are both encouraging to the riders regardless of level, and can articulate what is going on for the auditors. The opportunity to see how different professionals approach the problems we face with our horses is invaluable. Unfortunately this clinic was not well attended. Whether or not you want to ride like that person, or like their style, it is always interesting to know what others are doing. At the very least you get the chance to see some names in action; at most you might learn a new exercise or a different way to visualize or describe a solution. Without member support VADA/Nova will not be able to host such clinics. To coin another advertising phrase, not a sermon, just a thought." Alison and Markie I meant to send this before I moved my mom to Florida but time got away from me. I just wanted to say thank you for allowing me the opportunity to ride with Jacquie. It was bittersweet as that was the last ride I had on Nuno but a cool way to end our partnership!!!!!! I want to lend my volunteer services to you and your organization. I love that your organization does such cool learning activities!!!! Anyways, thanks again! 12 Member of the Month Our Member of the Month for July is Jacki Holland. Jacki has been a VADA/Nova member for many years, and was one of the original founders of VADA. Originally from DC, Jacki has lived all over Northern Virginia. She originally lived in Tysons Corner until moving to Middleburg in 1971, and later to Purcellville where she currently lives. Although Jacki has retired from her full time job working for Fairfax County she now teaches French and Russian for Northern Virginia Community College. Jacki was introduced to horses at a very young age. In fact, according to her mother, horse was Jacki s very first word. Growing up in Tyson s Corner when it was still a very rural area, Jacki rode the work horses from her uncle s field at the age of 1. When she was older she would ride her bike to the Standardbred farm near her house to pet and feed the horses. At the age of 12, Jacki s father took her to a stable where Lord Fairfax used to live (destroyed by Dulles) where she would ride all day. Later, while in college, she and a friend from Holland would skip classes and ride in Rock Creek Park. After graduating, a horse was the first purchase Jacki made when she began teaching. Throughout her very varied horse career Jacki spent time doing a little bit of everything. When young she spent some time breaking and training race horses. She also worked training cutting horses, and polo ponies. In addition she competed jumpers, trained field hunters, and evented before doing dressage. Jacki currently has two mares who are retired to having babies, and a stallion who is just retired. Her ride of choice is her 6-year-old thoroughbred gelding out of her thoroughbred mare. When not riding or teaching, Jacki enjoys reading, writing, traveling, and spending time with her sons. When volunteering, Jacki s favorite job is that of a scribe, because there is always something to be learned. - submitted by Laura Celia Southern Heritage Farm 2013 DRESSAGE SCHOOLING SHOW SERIES Rogues Road Midland, VA mannamitchell.wix.com/mitchellshows OPENING DATE FOR ALL SHOWS: January 1, 2013 SHOW DATES: 4/14 5/26 7/21 CLOSING DATES: 4/06 5/18 7/13 Judges: Krister Swartz, L Lee Ann Hansen, L Jessie Ginsburg, L SHOW DATES: 8/18 9/29 CLOSING DATES: 8/10 9/21 Judges: Jan Garlitz, L Aviva Nebesky, L Entry forms available on the website at Manager: Anna Mitchell, , mitchellsporthorses@gmx.com Secretary: Anna Mitchell, 4222 Fortuna Center Plz #229, Dumfries, VA , mitchellsporthorses@gmx.com Fees: $30/test $10 late fee Checks: Make check payable to Mitchell Sport Horses Classes: USEF, USDF tests, western dressage, prix caprilli, USEA and gaited tests Other info: ApSHA reg. horses $5 discount. 20 x 60 arena, some tests in 20 x 40m.
