3 SUMMARY MINUTES VADA/Nova Board Meeting July 10, 2017 via teleconference The meeting was called to order at 7:15 pm There were twelve Board members present, one excused, and one guest. The minutes of the June meeting were accepted by the Board. General Business: The Board agreed that in the future when we were going to hold a meeting via conference call rather than in person, we would put a notice to that effect on our Website (for guests) and also make sure we receive acknowledgements from every Board member that they were aware of the change. Thanks. Barb It s time to restock my supply of photos to use in the newsletter. Formal, casual, funny, horse, cat, dog-we d love to feature you! Please send to me at goldenmorgan@verizon.net Treasurer s Report: The balance in the operating account was $82, and in the savings account, $35, These balances do not reflect the purchase of the new cargo storage trailer and some expenses from the June show. Dilly will have a financial report on the June show at our next board meeting. Licensed Show: Dianne Boyd reported that we purchased a new cargo trailer that we needed to replace the storage shed that we are no longer allowed to keep at Morven. The trailer is now at Trailer Care being fitted with shelving and then we will need to figure out a permanent storage location, keeping in mind that it will need to be moved to Morven for every show. We are currently on the wait list for an acceptable spot at the storage facility where we keep our other show supplies. The Board discussed things we could do in September to attract competitors and keep the show fun and exciting. We decided to hold an ice cream party again on both show days and also continue with the GMO Challenge, with ribbons for the top placing teams and prizes for the top 2 teams. We also discussed holding a Musical Freestyle Challenge with prize money. Sheli moved that we hold two MFS Challenge Classes, one for USDF Levels and one for FEI levels, with $150 for 1 st place, $100 for 2 nd and $50 for 3 rd for both classes. Dilly seconded the motion and it was approved by the Board. Membership: Barb reported that as of the date of the meeting, there were 238 members. Schooling shows: We discussed tweaks we need to make to the partner shows program for next year, including explaining it better to our members and working on the calendar to avoid multiple partner shows on the same weekend. 9 Member of the Month Our VADA/Nova Member of the Month is Alice Downie. Alice grew up in a family that loved animals, but no one rode horses until she and her horse crazy sister got to go to horse camp when Alice was 7 years old. They learned to ride Western each summer for the next four years. Alice got her first horse, an OTTB named Shadowsintime when she was 12 and he was 10. They loved to gallop around the fields and jump together. They showed in some local hunter/jumper shows, but mostly she liked working at the barn and hanging out with him and her horsey friends. "Time" even went to college with her. It was at college that she took her first dressage lesson and found it made a huge difference in the way Time carried himself (no more ewe neck!). Unfortunately there were several years after college where Alice did not have access to an instructor. She wanted to some day get another horse and show, but would have to wait until she had the time and money. Alice didn't get her second horse until she was in her early 30s, after finally deciding on a career path in law enforcement. The horse was a 3 year old TB mare named Tosca who was her dream horse, tall and elegant. Alice planned to event her, but she was injured in a paddock accident at 6 and could not be ridden after that, so her plans to show were once again put on hold. For a time Tosca was pasture sound, so Alice bred her and she gave birth to a filly who is her current riding horse, Piper. Raising a foal was so much fun! Piper was laid back and easy. That is, until they tried to do some dressage work. Jumping and trail riding were no problem for her, but she developed an attitude when it came to dressage. Things did not progress as Alice had hoped and she wondered if she would ever be able to show her. By this point Alice had moved to Virginia to follow her career, and she got the opportunity to breed Piper to Sir Donnerhall. She was very hesitant since her focus had shifted more toward dressage and less toward jumping, and Piper was still not enjoying her dressage lessons. She decided to try breeding her, and in 2015 Piper welcomed a filly named Sadie. Sadie seems to be a good luck charm! She was designated a Premium filly at her Oldenburg NA inspection. And Piper seemed to settle right down after having her. They finally began to make some progress with their training. In 2016 Alice joined VADA/Nova and she and Piper entered their first show at Training Level. Finally, a dream come true! They worked through the summer and improved their scores, even winning a couple of High Point Awards and a year end AA Schooling Show award. Their good luck has continued this year. Alice successfully showed Sadie in a few in-hand breed classes to get her acclimated to the show environment. Piper and Alice have been showing First Level, along with taking as many lessons as they can, including riding in a clinic with George Williams, something that was also on her bucket list. Alice is very grateful to all the people who volunteer at the VADA/Nova shows since they helped make decades old dreams come true for her. She really enjoys volunteering as well, so she can give back and provide others the opportunity to reach their goals too. She particularly enjoys being a ring steward, because she gets to watch the other riders warm up or compete, so then she's motivated to go home and ride and to try even harder! She has found everyone in VADA/Nova to be very friendly and hard working so everyone has a positive experience whether they are competing or volunteering.
