1 VADA/Nova, Inc Newsletter Volume 40 Issue 1 January 2011 Enter at A Happy 2011 A new year, new show season, new tests.. Welcome to Looking back over 2010, I m certainly ready for a new year-at least in terms of weather. We had the blizzards in February, the drought and endless 90 o days this summer, and below normal temperatures for December. At least we had a lovely fall but it didn t last long enough (never does). VADA/Nova has the 2011 show season in place. We have seven schooling shows, three licensed shows and two breed shows on the calendar. Also, once again, we ll be hosting the USDF/Youth Team competition in July. You ll find the dates on the calendar page in this issue along with the prize list for our first schooling show on March 20. Remember that our schooling shows tend to fill before the closing date so when you choose the shows you d like to attend, get your entry in shortly after the opening date. If you re not already aware, there have been some major changes to the 2011 dressage tests for Intro through 4th level. First of all, there are only 3 tests per level. We ve adjusted our year-end award requirements to reflect that. One special note on the Intro tests. USDF has added a Test C which contains canter work. The Board was in agreement concerning what to do about year end awards and decided that Test C would be optional. Test B is required, both for awards and to qualify for the Championship schooling show. You may submit Test C if you choose. This is for VADA/Nova only. Requirements for year end awards for VADA state may differ so be sure to check your Purplebook when you receive it in February or March. Secondly, the collective marks have been broken down so now there are 6 marks instead of 4. The collectives for Intro are different from Training-4th so you ll want to familiarize yourself with all the changes. Some people have had trouble finding the new tests. Whinny Widgets has published the new pocket tests and I just ordered mine from Dressage Extensions. You can also order a complete booklet from USEF. There is a link on our web site, Click on Event Info then calendar, and scroll down to New Tests for However, if you re going to attend the banquet in January, we plan on selling the booklets at cost-no shipping to pay!!! So what does the new year hold for Ziggy and me? We had a late start showing this past season. Due to a variety of reasons, we didn t get out until September. While we had some respectable scores, there are several areas that we definitely need to work on-the canter depart and the stretchy/ chewy circle in particular. I m going to take my time and stay at Training level this year. If we make improvements at schooling shows, who knows, maybe we ll give a licensed show a try in September. I ve got my homework all mapped out for the winter. Happy New Year everyone. Hope to see you at some of the VADA/Nova activities. Barb In This Issue.. VADA IS A USDF GROUP MEMBER ORGANIZATION. We are considering a suggestion that we hold a few classes the Friday afternoon of the June show, in addition to the warm up classes for the Young Horse classes. Banquet: Language proposed regarding postponement due to weather was accepted by the venue. It was suggested that we raffle off baskets, as they do at the USDF Convention. There are ideas for door prizes. Holly is in charge of the silent auction, and will start pressing for donations right after the holidays. Jessie will MC. Year End Awards: Compiling these is completed. Ribbons and Prizes: Hodges sale starts the first of the year, so we will be able to take advantage of this for the Banquet as well as our shows. 15 Member of the Month We start off 2011 with VADA/Nova member Anne Harrington. Anne has been a member for about 5 years and currently resides in Fairfax City. Her horse, That Darn Houdini is boarded nearby. Houdini, who Anne has owned for nine years, is an 18 year old off the track Thoroughbred currently showing Second Level. She says he really enjoys his work and seems to enjoy showing off for his buddies. Houdini has a great personality and is a bit of a goof, which endears him to all her fellow boarders who have nicknamed him " The Energizer Bunny"! They hope to show Third level soon. As a horse crazy kid without access to any horses, Anne grew up and attended St.Lawrence University, where she got to ride within the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. She began her riding with English equitation and later was exposed to dressage. When she worked for the State Department, she lived all over and had access to some really great trainers and riders. Now Anne works for the Department of Energy and runs the world's largest nuclear non-proliferation program. She has been actively working on the non-proliferation issue for over 20 years. This new job requires a lot of travel, but Anne seems very organized and good at planning for time in the saddle. Houdini is ridden once a week by a friend at the barn, and Anne tries to schedule her trips so she can still ride up to 5 days a week! When she isn't working or riding Anne enjoys playing with her dog Indy, photography, and cooking. Her favorite volunteer position is scribing. Although you don't get to see much, she says she really learns what judges are looking for and takes that information home to work on with Houdini.
