1 VADA/NOVA, Inc Newsletter Volume 38 Issue 4 April 2009 HALT AT X Get Smart We all spend hours on the backs of our horses trying to learn how to ride them better. But how much time do we devote to learning once we are out of the saddle, about the many areas critical to the health and well-being of our beloved animals? Probably not nearly enough, and so the Education & Clinics committee decided to make that out-of-the-saddle learning the focus of this year s winter education event. On two winter evenings, when it was so cold out no one wanted to be riding anyway, a group of curious VADA/Nova members and some new friends came to the Best Western Hotel in Leesburg (which generously donated the meeting space) to attend two great seminars. In February, Dr. Byron Young presented a session entitled Help, I Need a Vet... or Do I? Complete with some slightly gory slides, Dr. Young answered that difficult question of when your horse s condition is truly an emergency, requiring immediate attention. We talked about colic, choke, punctures and lacerations, eye injuries and just about every other injury that can afflict a horse, categorizing each into the wait and see or the come out now categories. For each category, Dr. Young talked about what the owner should do till the vet arrived to help stabilize the situation, and even more importantly, what not to do. There were a ton of questions asked and answered, including what is the most common mistake owners make when dealing with their horse s medical issues? Dr. Young felt that in many cases, owners do not consult their vet soon enough. He admitted that as an emergency vet, he got few full nights of sleep. But, tired as that might leave him, he felt that vet involvement early on frequently resulted in a much more successful outcome. A few weeks later, Dan Shively from Nutrena Feed spoke on the Dos and Don t of Equine Nutrition and we had another extremely interactive session. Among the favorite tidbits I learned was that the ingredients on a bag of horse feed VADA IS A USDF GROUP MEMBER ORGANIZATION. THEIR MEMBERS ARE AUTOMATICALLY USDF GROUP MEMBERS. Who knew? Dan provided guidance on the percentage of your horse s diet that should come from hay versus grain and we talked through a variety of interesting issues such as how to make sure the easy keeper gets all the nutrition he needs without adding on pounds. And, when choosing between less hay of a higher nutritional concentration or more hay that was less nutritionally dense, go with the later (and Dan explained the scientific basis for his answer.) The bottom line is I have tons more to learn both in and out of the saddle, but getting smart is always fun! A few of the attendees at the Nutrena Feed seminar (photo by Dianne Boyd) In This Issue.. 3 PRELIMINARY SUMMARY MINUTES VADA/Nova Board Meeting March. 9, 2009 Morven Park Classroom 7:30 PM The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM and lasted until 9:45 PM. Seventeen of the nineteen Board members were present. Two were excused. There was one guest. Treasurer s Report: The balance of the main account is currently $30,623.00, that of the other account is approximately $8, and we continue to have our investment accounts. No April show deposits are included in these figures, and some ribbon bills are yet to be paid. All accounts are reconciled as of March 8, President s Report: The plug project received nice publicity in Morven Park s newsletter. Outlets have been installed in D barn, and we are within $ of having the funds needed to install plugs in A barn. Two more used book sales are planned the April Licensed Show and the Anne Gribbons clinic. The books will be on $1.00 and $5.00 tables. Eight letters soliciting funds have been sent to major competitors who are not VADA/Nova members and might not be aware of the project. There will be posters in the barns and announcements made by the announcer during the shows. We would like to identify other organizations which might be interested in participating in the project. 501C3 Status: The IRS has advised that they received our application and that generally, they will tell us within sixty days if additional information is needed. April Licensed Show: As of March 9 about 45 entries have been received.(editor s note: Since then, entries have been increasing) The closing date was extended to March 30 and the manager expects that everyone will wait until the last minute. Even so, it is not anticipated that this will be a huge show. Even the big shows in Florida have been slow to fill this year. This show is a qualifier and some competitors are coming from out of state. There are new FEI tests this year, and a new regulation length for dressage whips. We now have three computers for use at our shows. It was moved, seconded and passed to spend $746.06, plus the cost of two mice and two number pads, to make the two new computers show ready. We have been receiving queries from advertisers and vendors. March Schooling Show: There are many entries and a deep waiting list for the Schooling Show March 22. However, they decided not to move to two rings because we have lived to regret the decision under similar circumstances in the past due to scratches, no shows, etc. There will be a videographer who makes DVDs. The Stubben saddle fitter and representative will be at this show as a vendor. VADA Grant: We are entitled to a VADA grant of $ In the past this grant has been applied to camp expenses, to clinics given by Rudy Rostek and Linda Zang, and to paying for lunch for our members who attend the Zang- Clarke clinic in It was moved, seconded and passed that we apply the VADA Grant funds to benefit those members who audit the November 2009 Cynthia Collins clinic, with details to be determined. Survey: Approximately one half of the membership which received the survey by (248) and 15 of the 25 who received it in printed format replied to the survey. The results will be presented to the Board in full at the next meeting. In the meantime, the survey will be sent to everyone who has joined since the survey was posted. Membership: There are now 364 members. About 35 of those recently received came as a result of the membership outreach letters. Sponsorship Package: By and large the Sponsorship Package has brought favorable comments and increased participation. Clinics and Education: We (VADA/Nova) are helping VADA with the Anne Gribbons clinic the first weekend in April. The riders are all selected and plans go forward. Our first education evening session on February 19 went very well: Dr. Byron Young presented a session on Emergency Equine Medicine. There were approximately 30 participants. Both Dr. Young and the Best Western in Leesburg donated their services/facility and will receive free advertising in P&P. Expenses for the session were $51.00 for light refreshments. Income generated was $70.00 (seven non-members attended at $10.00 each). We also had one participant sign up for a family membership. Feedback on the session was extremely positive. The second education evening on March 5 featured Dan Shively, the Nutrena Territory Manager, speaking on Equine Nutrition. This very interactive program drew about 15 people. Again, both the speaker and the facility donated their services and will receive free advertising in P&P. Light refreshments were available. All participants at both sessions were asked to think of other topics which would be of similar interest to our members for sessions next February and March. The next meeting will be April 13, 2009 at 7:30 PM Respectfully submitted. Nancy Stover Old Business: During a discussion of the division of the Silent Auction money we decided that we want to give at least six scholarships of $ each and be sure that the expenses of ARC s camp are covered. We agreed to revisit the matter later and see if we can add to the number of scholarships, based on camp finances and our Licensed Show income.

20 DIARY OF A SHOW MANAGER: REPORT FROM THE MARCH 22, 2009, SCHOOLING SHOW AT MORVEN PARK ~ Jessie Ginsburg Dear Diary, March 21, 2009 Morning: It s the day before the show, and we have had very few glitches so far. For the last several weeks, secretary Kathy Curtis has been dealing with the massive influx of entries, and is now busy scheduling and rescheduling based on scratches and adds from the waiting list. My living room is filled with the managers boxes from my trip to the storage shed last weekend with new schooling show chairs Rebecca Woodward-Davis and Michelle Lachner. Donna Gatchell, VADA/Nova volunteer manager/ recruiter extraordinaire, has assembled a great line-up of volunteers some old friends, some people I will be meeting for the first time. Usually the March show ends up being really cold, but the weather forecast calls for the perfect warm spring weather. I can t wait! Noon: My first glitch. Show judge Jaralyn Finn calls me did I know she was bringing her own scribe? Um, no. I call the volunteer scheduled to scribe, Francene Basalyga, and she is amenable to doing whatever we need. That type of flexibility and helpfulness bodes well! Evening: After a full day of shopping for show stuff, it is time for glitch #2. Michelle and I are scheduled to meet at Morven Park at 7 pm to set up the show area. I arrive at 6:45 pm, and am puzzled to see a lot of cars and horse trailers parked around the indoor. I go inside and it turns out that the horse auction scheduled for the day is still going on, with no sign of ending anytime soon. We leave the items we brought in the judge s booth and hope they will still be there in the morning. March 22, :30 am. I thought that it was supposed to be warm today. It is 27 degrees. I feel foolish buying ice at Sheetz, but hopefully it will warm up later and the volunteers and competitors will actually drink cold soda and water. 7:00 am. Michelle is already unloading her car when I arrive at Morven. We hastily finish unloading and rush to set up before the competitors and volunteers arrive. The volunteer s start showing up and immediately offer to assist. It is cooperative, enthusiastic and helpful group -- I have confidence that the show will go smoothly with such a great crew. Scorers Debbie Marriott and Francene assemble the calculators (and figure out how to get them to calculate to three places); ring steward Bonnie Uyeda begins organizing the warm-up; and runners Marianne Schilling and Anne Cochrane, joined by VADA/Nova board member Linda Bramblett, help setting up the snacks and beverages. Jaralyn arrives with her scribe (her assistant trainer Julie Koehler) and settle into the judge s booth. 8:30 am. The show has started! The schedule starts off with the highest levels of the day (Third and Fourth level), and we are treated to some very solid rides. We then move to the intro rides, which feature a combination of riders new to showing, and young horses being introduced to the show ring. Laura Whitford has opted to compete her lovely youngster Rosinanta HC for her first ride, not knowing what to expect. When I see that her debut scored 80%, I rush over to the ring to watch her second test, which is steady and flowing and scores an 80.5%. Junior rider Juliana Everett is leading the official high score race with a % at Training Level Test 1. It is nice to see a rider moving up from success at Intro last year to do so well in her first outing at a higher level. 1:10 pm The afternoon begins on time, and the show is running like clockwork. The volunteers are all pros and work really well together. I am surprised to see my old friend Joanne Hodges, who moved to Florida about 10 years ago and is now just back in the area. It is great to catch up, and to see that one of Joanne s first orders of business is to get involved in VADA/Nova. 2:05pm The scoring table yells over to make sure I write that they are having fun. This is what volunteering is all about meeting other people who love dressage and making new friends! And of course, supporting VADA/Nova and enabling us to offer high quality and well organized activities. 2:50pm VADA/Nova president Sheli King drops by to check in, drop off some supplies for the VADA Anne Gribbons clinic in a couple of weeks, and pick up some donations for the ongoing VADA/Nova book drive/fundraising effort to install outlets at every stall. Sheli is shocked that I have provided some healthy munchies for the volunteers and competitors in addition to the usual junk food. 3:30pm Competitor Bob Clements gives Kathy Curtis a couple of nice items for the upcoming fundraiser tack sale, organized by the enthusiastic and creative VADA/Nova Adult Rider Committee, being held at the upcoming April licensed show at Morven Park. Amid the chaos of show preparation, how nice of Bob to remember to contribute to this fundraiser!

21 4:00pm We do the drawing for the Stubben care basket for leather and horses, which Stubben rep Anne Crowell generously donated. Our lucky winner is Susanne Hiegel I m sure her 28-year-old show partner, Hot Wired, will enjoy his baths with luxury Stubben shampoo. 5:15 pm The show is over! Victoria Jessop receives the championship ribbon for being the high score of the day, scoring an impressive % at First Level Test 2 on her lovely bay gelding, India. Judge Jaralyn Finn remarks on the high quality of the horses and riders at the show. The hardy volunteers assist with the clean up before leaving what a great team effort! Michelle and I drop the show stuff off at the storage unit. We reflect on how lucky we were to have an incredible group of volunteers, a great judge, a fantastic, well-prepared first-time show secretary in Kathy Curtis, and the helpful Morven Park staff to help make this show a success. And even the weather cooperated. Michelle was so helpful all day, making notes of items to purchase and things to improve for future shows, and even reorganizing a number of the show boxes it is clear that she will be a great co-chair of the schooling show committee. 9:15 pm Just got back home from a quick ride on Derby, and must now do laundry and pack for my business trip tomorrow. Thanks, Diary, for listening. Jessie Ginsburg In addition to all the volunteers mentioned in the diary, VADA/Nova wishes to thank our great management team: Manager Jessie Ginsburg and Secretary Kathy Curtis. Super job! Congratulations to our first group of VADA/Nova members who qualified for the November 1st Championship Schooling Show. These rule changes, primarily impacting saddlery and errors/penalties, are effective immediately. Some of the rule changes only affect High Performance classes; several others apply to all exhibitors in USEF/USDF-Licensed Dressage Competitions. For more information, please visit the USEF web site at this link: ECapproved pdf. For questions, please contact Jennifer Keeler, USEF National Director of Dressage, at jkeeler@usef.org.
