1 Half-halt The Newsletter for the Southeastern Chapter of the Virginia Dressage Association Volume Number 30 Issue Number 2 FEB MEMORABLE MOMENTS- 1) DAHLIA JENSEN AS I ENTERED THE WARM UP RING ON MY NEW HORSE, I COULD FEEL THERE MAY BE A LITTLE DISCOURSE. DOWN THE LONG SIDE OF THE RAIL IS WHERE WE BOTH FAILED. A HORSE CAME AT US WHILE IN A TEST AND TO SAY THE LEAST, DIESEL WAS NOT IMPRESSED. HE DECIDED TO JIG AND THROW A BUCK. I CAME OFF AND HIT THE DIRT. THANK GOODNESS THERE WAS AN ER NURSE TO MAKE SURE I WASN T HURT. I DUSTED OFF MY BREECHES, WHILE MY TEAMMATE CAUGHT MY HORSE. I KNEW ID HAVE TO GET BACK ON ONCE THE ADRENALIN WAS GONE. NO MUSS, NO FUSS, RIDING DIESEL THROUGH THAT TEST WAS A MUST! WE ENTERED THE RING.X -HALT, SALUTE, WE WERE GOING TO FINISH THIS TEST, IT JUST SO HAPPENED TO BE ONE OF MY BEST. A BIG SCORE OF 77+, GOOD BOY DIESEL, I COULDN T ASK FOR MORE, EVEN THOUGH THE FOLLOWING DAYS I WOULD BE SORE!!!! 2). LYNN CARRIERO I THINK CYNDI O SAID IT BEST AS FOR THIS LADY READ MANY, MANY TESTS! LYNN CARRIERO BAKED HERSELF IN THE SUN TODAY TO READ 26 TESTS. WE ARE ALL REALLY BLESSED. THAT S A CONSERVATIVE 130 MINUTES IN THE SUN, STANDING ON REFLECTIVE SAND. THAT S JUST THE READING MINUTES, NOT INCLUDING THE WARM UPS, PREP AND BEING BY THE RING READY, IN DIRE NEED OF A FAN. LYNN FOR ALL YOU DO, THIS SHOT IS FOR YOU!!!!! WE APPRECIATE ALL THE LITTLE THINGS BEHIND THE SCENES, EVEN THOUGH SOMETIMES WE KNOW YOU PROBABLY WANT TO SCREAM SOMETHING OBSENE! FROM DEEP WITHIN OUR HEARTS, WE TRULY APPRECIATE YOU READING ALL THE PARTS!!!! 3) SHANNON HOLLOWAY THE SMART GREY MARE WHO WOULD HONOR A DARE. AS I ENTERED THE RING, MY MARE DRESSED IN BRAIDS, I WAS TRYING TO BE QUIET WITH MY AIDS. WE HAD PRACTICED A LOT WITHOUT TOO MUCH TROUBLE, PERHAPS I NEVER THOUGHT SHE WOULD BURST MY BUBBLE. I DIDN T KNOW HOW OR WHEN TO DO THE CORRECTIONS, BUT AFTERWARDS, I WOULD CERTAINLY GET THE TRAINER S DIRECTIONS.

Balance is $23, This does include the latest banquet payment. Received the 2017 Vada clinic check. Awards: very thorough plans and volunteers set up for the Annual Banquet. Sign up for banquet has been extended to Jan 19 th due to the mail delays due to the weather. Hope to have a final count this Friday. All awards are ordered. I should have the Hodges order on the 9 th. My cousin is working on the Champion and a few reserve champion gifts. One problem, 6 items have been backordered and hopefully we will have them by the banquet, If not, all recipients of those awards are aware they are on backorder and are fine with receiving them at a later date. I have received all the awards from Hodges, and my cousin. There are still 6 backordered and I ordered another one from Hodges that I forgot however, the one from Hodges will be here in time for the banquet. For the Banquet 1) Beth to bring 2 different colored tickets. 1 color for door prizes, the other color for 50/50. I ll bring 50 in cash so we have change. Should we do 1.00 each, 6 for 5.00, and a bakers dozen for 10.00? 2) Ray and Candy to work check in. 3) Amy Klutz is trying to borrow a projector but if she can t, Carol will bring hers and the computer, I ve already spoken to Carol and Amy about this. Carol to bring cart for projector and computer set up. I will bring some extension cords and Carol will also bring if she has to use her computer and projector. 4) Amy Klutz is in charge of reservations and the slide show please get reservations and pictures to her. We extended reservation deadline to the 19 th of January because of weather and mail being delayed. 5) I will touch base with Hilton next week to make sure we are all set. Evelyn will have to call in cc a few days before the banquet once we have a head count. There were a couple glitches but we are paid to date and will let Beth or Evelyn know what balance is due once we have head count and monies in hand. FRIED CHICKEN AGAIN THIS YEAR!! Due to the fact that about people from BGRA did not get food last year, they will be called upon for one of the first tables to get food, besides awards table. I have asked about having servers to call tables and serve food so we do not run out of food again this year. 6) Carol to bring big screen for slide show 7) Kate Knick to take pictures 8) Wendy to bring music 9) Sarah will pass out awards and hopefully Joann can help her with set up also. Joann happy to help Sarah with set up 10) Certificates are printed and Beth will sign certificates at banquet beforehand. 11) Donna Rowland is looking for the SVDA sign and if she can t find it, she is going to try to get us another one. Donna Rowland hasn t gotten back to me except that last years signs were casualties and I called Carol to see if she had any from previous years, unfortunately not. Amy is working to try to get us signs. She will call Matt, the man who made our lovely junior stall signs this year and see if he can do something for us at a reasonable cost. Amy is also doing some decorations. 12) Lora Gibson and Sandy Padrick will help me sort and pack up the awards in order to make Sarah s life at banquet easier. 13) I will not have a cost breakdown until February meeting but we should be within our budget, I will need to get some numbers from Evelyn. 14) I will do my best to get donations for silent auction, if you re on FB, you know I ve been trying. 15) Beth is speaking at banquet, Charlene is going to give a little speech on juniors. Alan Gonyo to do prayer. Robyn will be giving out volunteer coupons. I can make announcement such as scholarship applications deadline, if Janice wants me to. Anyone else want to say anything?

4 16) I have volunteer sheet for sign in. Volunteers should be there by 4pm. I will be there at 3 to make sure the set up is correct. I ordered 10 tables, 6 for awards, 1 for door prizes and 3 for silent auction. She has some 12ft tables. If I need more, I will be there early enough to get them. I have a couple people that may be able to help but not sure how many we need for silent auction stuff. I know Charlene was going to the juniors. Charlene should have the silent auction sheets and pens for the silent auction. 17) All board members, please bring a doorprize. It doesn t have to be anything big or extravagant. 18) Right now I have about 70 ppl reserved but more keep coming in so hope to have attendees. Clinics and Programs: Rider fitness clinic Jan 13 with Tina Fike: Tina s fitness clinic was great and very informative. Good info on joint mobility and biomechanics of the body. We actually did a full workout session with the equipment she provided. Turnout was low- 8 people total. Several of the people liked her so much they are talking about forming a small group and paying her to come a few times a month. She will be sending out more info to those that attended by . Mr., Krysta Bryants grandfather donated the $50 fee for the use of the church. Kathy will send a thank you note. Jerry Schrink clinic scheduled for Jan 20/21 at Sea Horse Farm. Jerry asked if we could start the clinic a little later on Saturday, since he is short handed at the college. Applications are now closed and Robyn will schedule times tomorrow and send to everyone. There have 16 riders, 4 doing private lessons and the rest are semi-private. We have 2 non-members participating (they paid the non-member price) and 2 riders joined specifically to get the member discount! Janice and I looked at the facility on Saturday. The covered is quite impressive with a riding area that is fully fenced. There is also a small dressage court on grass and a large sand ring. It will be a nice place for us to have shows at in the future. There is plenty of room for auditors. The owner will receive 1 free private lesson in exchange for using her facility. The owners are allowing us to use the bathroom in the barn. Jerry will stay at Charlene Jensen's house. Robyn will take him to dinner Saturday night and Janice is providing lunch on Sunday. Jerry brings his own speaker system. Evelyn and I have worked out how to get a check to me. Working on a spring clinic with Thurston. Most likely in April or later. 11 SVDA Scholarship Report Hello My name is Dahlia Jensen. I received the 2017 Ravel Scholarship for sportsmanship from the USDF for I was nominated for this award as a result of helping the JR team at the Region 1 JR/YR Dressage Team Championship show event though my horse was lame and I was unable to show. I was one of 13 Shining Star nominees eligible for the scholarship but, the only recipient for After using the grant money, I will write an article for the USDF detailing how the money was used to further my equestrian education. So far, I has attending the Region 1 JR/YR clinic taught by George Williams at Hilltop Farm in Maryland as an auditor and I rode in the January clinic hoisted by SVDA with Jerry Shurink. I plan on attending one more clinic this year to round out the scholarship. I was excited and humbled to receive the sportsmanship recognition as a Shining Star and did not expect to win the grant but, I am excited for the opportunity to use the grant money to further my training and understanding of dressage. The Ravel Scholarship was created by the USDF Youth Programs Committee in partnership with Akiko Yamazaki, Ravel s owner, the Ravel Education Grants were developed as part of the current USDF Shining Star Award program. This program is designed to recognize the most outstanding displays of sportsmanship among USDF youth and is based on the USDF Youth Programs Committee s definition of good sportsmanship, qualities Ravel displayed throughout his career: Courage, Respect, Perseverance, and Responsibility. All USDF Shining Star Award recipients who are current USDF Participating Members will be eligible for these grants, which can be used to cover expenses associated with attending an educational dressage event of their choice. Up to four $500 Ravel Education Grants will be awarded each year. Thank you, Dahlia Jensen

12 The Jerry Shurink Clinic Jerry was an awesome instructor who was very interested in getting to know me and the areas I wanted to focus on in the clinic. He gave me new exercises to work on and many additional things to try with my aids to continue to help Disco and I develop as a team. He was so friendly and made sure that I was learning and having fun. I m hoping Jerry comes back soon so that I can take advantage of more opportunities to train with him. Seahorse was an amazing facility and the owner was a wonderful hostess. It was such a good day and I m thankful to Robyn for coordinating such a wonderful event Jerry was a very engaging instructor with clear directives to aids that needed to be applied in transitions and various exercises. One exercise was to trot on a 20 meter circle with 4 poles evenly spaced on the circle. Going to the right my pony Avi did not have any issues. Quite and soft with a steady tempo. Going to the left was another issue. He had a loss of balance causing him to quicken & stiffen which resulted is frequent quiet half halts to rebalance. Avi found the poles a very fun exercise while working on suppleness and carrying his weight evenly on both sides of his body. Janice A Fantastic Clinic! Jerry provided very practical & useful instruction & aids. We will definitely sign-up for another one of his clinics. Thank you for bringing quality Dressage instructors to Hampton Roads!" Steve, Rhea & Amelia Matson "I participated in the SVDA Dressage Clinic with Jerry Schurink at Seahorse Run on January 21st -- this was my first dressage clinic, so I was a bit overwhelmed and nervous. However, the experience was WONDERFUL! The facility was terrific (fabulous arena, ample parking and warm up areas), the atmosphere was relaxed and Mr. Schurink was kind, easy for this novice to understand and accessible. In addition, the clinic was very organized and efficiently run. The sessions started timely and ran smoothly. It was truly a "well oiled machine"! Mr. Schurink was interested in each rider and horse -- he asked specific questions, wanted to understand our issues and what we wanted to accomplish. He, also, allowed all of us to ask questions at the conclusion of our respective session. I never felt insignificant or unimportant. He provided excellent advice and took the time to explain basic mechanics, which was extremely helpful to me. Mr. Schurink was thorough in his explanations, allowing me to work on fine-tuning my current skills, while introducing new movements, as well. I am hopeful Mr. Schurink will return to Seahorse Run for future clinics -- I would ride again with him tomorrow if I could! Thank you to SVDA and Robyn Nunnally for a wonderful first experience!" --Holly Ferguson
