1 Half-halt The Newsletter for the Southeastern Chapter of the Virginia Dressage Association Volume Number 27 Issue Number 8 August 2015 PRESIDENTS LETTER AUGUST 2015 Whew its been a busy month! With 150 members as a Chapter of VADA, SVDA is very active on the National scene! First off - Congratulations to Victoria Bryant from Scott Sarkozi Training Center who earned her USDF Bronze Medal scores at 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd level aboard her ½ Arab gelding Boogie to the Max. Dressage at Lexington was very successful for SVDA members! The Sporting Horse Amateur Challenge is a very competitive division that showcases the wonderful amateurs that support this show and this sport we all love! Amanda Harper was 8 th at 1 st level, Caitlin Couch (Jr) was 5th Place in Training level and Julie Shilling earned Reserve Champion at 2 nd Level. Jessica Zoskey, Caitlin Couch, Jean DeVenny and Kate Knick all posted scores in the 70s. Kate Knick and Spyderman LA won the Arabian- ½ Arabian High Score award. Lilianna Nabhan (Jr) won the High Score Equitation award. The Elfenridge Girls led off the 2 Tempi Challenge with a well-choreographed Paux De-Trois with their stick horses! Tristin Butler and Adriane Alvord competed in the 9 entry field for The Dressage Foundation Two Tempi Challenge, with Adriane took 2 nd place with 42 2-tempis on Mondavi F. The event raised quite a bit of funding for the Dressage Foundation and was a lot of fun as everyone cheered on their favorites! A big congratulations to Lisa Dickman from Virginia Beach who was the recipient of the Elysium Farm Fund Grant from the Dressage Foundation (see above!) for US Breeder Excellence. Lisa will attend the KWPN-NA Annual meeting alongside the KWPN Stallion Show in Holland in early SVDA member Gabrielle Fleming, DVM, who successfully graduated this month from her veterinary acupuncture training for horse and companion animals at The Chi Institute in Reddick, Florida. Pam Burdett was chosen from many Region 1 applicants to ride in the USDF Adult Clinic series with Betsy Steiner and Kathy Connelly (who is one of my all-time favorites). It will be held on August 1-2, 2015 at Pepperwood Farm in Fuquay Varina, NC. This is just 10 miles south of Raleigh and only has a $45 auditor fee. What a great educational experience! We look forward to an article about Pam s experience in the September newsletter! Our VADA L program Part 2 winds up with the final exam on Sept 12/13 in Leesburg, VA. Janice and I have been the co-organizers of the program and we wish all examinees the best. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers throughout all 3 portions of the Part 2 from both SVDA and VADA-CC. Have a great August everyone! Kathy Rowse President, SVDA

Lengthening or replacing the end of a cross tie. Hang your keys on a belt loop. Etiquette Corner Let s take a look at Errors of Course (DR 122.5). Everyone makes an error occasionally, so don t let an error (or two) negatively impact the rest of your test. Simply take a deep breath and follow the judge s instructions on where to pick your test back up, if the bell has been rung. If you realize you have made of error and the ring has not been rung, simply continue riding your test. 5. Errors. a. When a competitor makes an error of the course (takes the wrong turn, omits a movement, etc.) the President of the Jury warns him by sounding the bell. The President shows him if necessary the point at which he must take up the test again and the next movement to be executed then leaves him to continue by himself. However, in some cases when, although the competitor makes an error of the course, the sounding of the bell would unnecessarily impede the fluency of the performance it is up to the President to decide whether to sound the bell or not. However, if the bell is not sounded at an error of course, or error of test in which the movement, or a requirement of the movement, is repeated and the error occurs again, only one error is recorded. If a rider performs in a rising trot when a sitting trot is required, or vice versa, the bell must be sounded and the rider warned that this is an error that accumulates if repeated, leading to elimination at the third occurrence. b. In National and FEI tests, every error of the course whether the bell is sounded or not, must be penalized, except as noted above: the first time by 2 points; the second time by 4 points; the third time the competitor is eliminated. The use of voice or clicking of tongue is a serious fault involving the deduction of at least 2 points from those that would otherwise have been awarded for the movement where this occurred. Voice errors are not cumulative.

6 Eflenridge Students at the Terra Ceia Farm SVDA Schooling Show. 7 am pony parade with Team Tristin! Checking out the judges tent and any places "monsters" might be hiding =) Alas, all was well. Such a beautiful farm. Mom Harrell has a pep talk with "Glory" before the first class. Lorna Thielen and "Gus" on deck at the show at Terra Ceia. (I think Lorna got the most comments on best matching outfit, with her navy and white and bling!) Toxic Plant Corner It must have worked because Matty and Glory got second with a 63%, we'll take that! There were several planets I thought about putting in here But this is the one I decided on. Its common name is Flat weed, Its real name is Cat s Ear because the leaves are soft, like a cats ear. Or, False Dandelion, because it s flower resembles a Dandelion. The reason it s called flat weed is because the leaves lay flat to the ground. It is very edible for humans. The leaves and flowers are great in salads. The root can be dried and ground to make coffee. The problem is these plants cause Stringhalt in horses, especially draught horses when the plants are eaten. If the horse is removed from the pasture where the plants are he will recover just fine.

9 Dressage at Lexington 2015 Hosts Show s First 'Two Tempi Challenge' Submitted on 07/15/2015 to The Dressage Foundation Dressage at Lexington 2015 Written by Mandi Atkins and Brent Ashley Three riders compete in the 'human' Two- Tempi Challenge' (Photo: Pics Of You) Sprieser and Fender celebrate with a victory lap (Photo: Pic Of You) Dressage at Lexington (DAL) 2015 started off with a bang by hosting a new kind of celebration. As most are probably aware, The Dressage Foundation supports camaraderie within the dressage community through something called the Two-Tempi Challenge. The Challenge is a competition where horses with the ability to complete two-tempi changes, consecutively, compete against each other. DAL 2015, known for hosting new and innovative show features, held its own Two-Tempi Challenge, featuring nine talented horse-rider teams in three divisions. Among this year s two-tempi masters was Jim Koford and Don Principe, one of the year s hottest stallions. And although Koford and Marydell Farms trusted stallion caught the attention of several hundred spectators, it was ultimately Stratocaster and Lauren Sprieser of Marshall, Virginia who took home the gold with fifty eight consecutive two-tempis. Fender, as Stratocaster is more commonly known, is a nine year old Oldenburg that Sprieser has trained for the past five years. He loves changes, Sprieser exclaimed. We only started training for [two-tempi changes] in May, but he absolutely loves them. According to Sprieser, Fender is a fun, confident athlete with a lot of personality. Lauren has been showing at DAL for the past eight years and doesn t hold back from sharing that DAL is one of the best shows. Sprieser and Fender weren t the only showstoppers who participated in the Challenge; Twenty one year old Young Rider Adrienne Alvord and Mondavi F ( Tobi ), completed an impressive forty two consecutive changes. After only working together for seven months, Alvord feels this special ten year old Arab/Trekahner gelding, owned by Kathy Rowse and Janice Mumford, would do anything for her. Rowse wasn t surprised with her boy s success, asserting that, Tobi would pop twos and ones all day! Alvord, who trains at Fairview Training Center in Millwood, Virginia, has been competing at DAL since she was twelve years old and will go on to compete at Young Riders in Lexington, Kentucky next week. As previously mentioned, the Two-Tempi Challenge is inspired by The Dressage Foundation (TDF), an organization committed to the education of our industry s riders, trainers, and judges. As such, there was nothing more fitting than to have Rebecca Langwost-Barlow of Preston, Maryland, start off the challenge; she was one of the first beneficiaries of

10 TDF s scholarship to ride and train in Germany. Langwost-Barlow and her 18.2 h, 2003 Oldenburg gelding, Chesapeake, set the first mark to beat with twenty six consecutive two-tempi changes. Langwost-Barlow and Chesapeake show off their two-tempi skills (Photo: Pic Of You) Following the impressive feat, Langwost-Barlow reflected on her TDF experience. After just a few, short minutes of discussing her European dream trip, it was clear how invaluable that opportunity was to her career. Langwost-Barlow was most impressed with the quality of training, teamwork, and respect for the sport found in European Dressage. It is worth noting the Langwost-Barlow team scored a jaw-dropping % in DAL s Grand Prix feature. Langwost-Barlow broke Chesapeake, as well as her mare Libertina, who placed second in her division and third overall in DAL s 2015 Prix St. George Challenge with a %. Another disciple of TDF was Langwost-Barlow s late father, Craig Langwost, who the industry lost just a few months ago. Mr. Langwost, a longtime supporter of TDF and DAL, was no stranger in the barns and will be missed. In honor of her father, Langwost-Barlow has requested we donate to and support TDF. The Mission of The Dressage Foundation is To cultivate and provide financial support for the advancement of dressage. 23 Spotlight on a Member This month is DR. Lyndy Soboleski DVM Dr. Lyndy Soboleski runs the Windsor Pet Hospital in, of all places, Windsor Virginia. She treats not only K-9 s and felines, but also pigs, rabbits, raptors and retiles. Lyndy spends most of her time treating cats and dogs with the usual problems and needs, but she also finds that many of her patients benefit from Laser Therapy and Acupuncture for the relief of pain. She has save the life of an Eastern plains Cooter (turtle) that was hit by a car when its shell was cracked, by repairing the damaged shell with fiberglass. The turtle was released into a nearby pond where Lyndy can check on it from time to time. Lyndy has two girls, 11 and 14. They run a horse farm where Lyndy breeds her Thoroughbred stallion, Cat OF Mine, and where she cares for other horses in need of her special touch. This includes her present mount, the big fancy black horse we have seen trotting around the dressage ring this year, Rolex. Lyndy has been rehabbing Rolex back from an almost career end, if not life ending injury. His recover has been nothing short of amazing. She is delighted now to be able to put this wonderfully talented horse back into the work he loves. But Lyndy is not all animals, she is studying Tae Kwon Do, so don t pick a fight with her. She has her Blue Belt with Black stripe and is in training for her Red Belt. No you cannot do this without working your rear end off. One thing for sure is that Dr. Lyndy Soboleski is a very busy lady. See you at the next show Lyndy.

24 VADA Shel Gafford Memorial Award for EXCELLENCE IN SPORTMANSHIP Nomination deadline for 2015 Awards: August 1, 2015 For anyone not fortunate enough to have known Shel, he was not only a gifted horseman and successful competitor, but also a truly good sport and dedicated advocate to VADA. Shel was a seasoned competitor, having won the Gold and Silver Individual Medals in his last two years as a Young Rider at the NAYRC. He always rode to win, but never at the expense of his horse or another rider. Rather than "psyching" his fellow competitors, Shel was more likely to offer a helping hand or wish them luck. Furthermore, Shel was a tireless supporter of VADA. He served as President during some of our Association's most difficult and trying times. It is largely due to his diplomacy and tenacity that VADA exists as it does today. It is this spirit of unselfish good sportsmanship and generous volunteerism, which were so much a part of Shel's nature, that VADA wishes to encourage and reward. If you are aware of a VADA members who is: 1) Actively involved in any aspect of competition and/or VADA activities (eg. Rider, owner, trainer, coach, show mom/dad, spouse, offspring, VADA Board Member, VADA volunteer), 2) who consistently exhibits the characteristics of good sportsmanship and unselfish support of VADA, and 3) has not received the Shel Gafford award within the past 10 years, please nominate that person for the Shel Gafford Award. Include in your nomination the person's name, chapter affiliation, and a brief statement (200 words or less) explaining why you feel your nominee is deserving of this award. Nominations must be received by Bettina Longaker at the address below by August 1, The slate of nominations will be sent to the President of each Chapter, who shall, using the method they determine, poll the members of their Chapter and select their Chapter's choice for the award. In the event of a tie, the VADA Board of Directors shall select the winning nominee from the two candidates. Chapters MUST report their selections to Bettina no later than October 31. The recipient will be notified that he/she will receive an award at the VADA banquet in January and will be encouraged to attend. The recipient will receive a special award and a check for $

25 The Dressage Foundation By Lisa Dickman Several years ago, when I was devouring every tidbit of information I could find in the monthly USDF Connection, I saw a small little article talking about that year s recipient of the Dressage Foundation s Elysium Fund Grant for Breeder Excellence. The grant was to help pay for the breeder to further her education by attending a breeding event overseas. When my breed organization, the KWPN-NA, announced that they would be hosting their annual meeting in Holland next year alongside the KWPN Annual Stallion Show, I remembered the article about the Elysium Fund, and decided to look into it and see exactly what it was all about. Afterall, with the expansion of my breeding program and the purchasing of a new farm, there was no way I could afford to attend the meeting in Holland unless I could get some help. Once I started researching The Dressage Foundation, I was amazed at what I found. Developed in 1989 by Lowell Boomer (founder of the USDF), the Dressage Foundation s mission is to: cultivate and provide financial support for the advancement of dressage. ( Through donations, the Foundation is able to give riders, instructors, trainers, breeders and judges funds to continue their education in dressage, with the hopes of further developing a stronger dressage community overall in the United States. Grants are available for Young Riders, Adult Amateurs, Trainers, Judges you name it! The web-site is easy to follow and information on each grant is readily accessible. From a breeding perspective, the Elysium Farm Fund Grant is developed to offer funds for breeders to attend educational programs related specifically to breeding. The hope is to help US breeders develop their programs to promote strong, sound breeding practices and to further enhance dressage breeding here at home. They asked for information about my short and long term goals, and what I hoped to achieve with my breeding practices. I was thrilled to learn that The Dressage Foundation felt my application to be deserving of the grant, and awarded me $1500 towards my trip to the Annual Meeting/Stallion Show in Holland next February. Now I can look forward to bringing back as much information as possible to enhance my own breeding decisions, and hopefully, be able to share some of that information with other breeders as well. I would also encourage everyone else to look into what the Dressage Foundation has to offer them. Dressage is all about training our horses, so we need to do everything we can to increase our level of training with them. And for those of you that are interested in donating to the Dressage Foundation, I would highly recommend that as well. You never know how much your help will touch the lives of so many other aspiring dressage junkies like myself!

30 SVDA Asked: WHATS IN YOUR SHOW TRUNK? And got some really brilliant ideas! KATIE JENKINS: Sparkling Apple Cider!! Our show family never heads to a show without a bottle of non-alcoholic Sparkling Apple Cider chilling in the cooler. Our policy is that the whole show crew gets to share a bottle for each score of 70% or higher one of our riders earns. It's a great tradition we've kept up for a few years that is a great reward for a great test. Even some of the horses like it! Enell Sports Bra: big chests need support when riding big moving horses Lucky braid from my dearly departed equine soulmate's mane: just a little thing to remember how amazing rides can be and help keep my nerves under control EZ-Seam ripper (also known as a 'quilters thread snipper') for taking down braids: Snip, snip, snip, done! Watermelon & grapes: hydrating and tolerable for even the most nauseous case of show nerves ROBYN NUNNALLY: My favorite show bag product is Pink Afro Sheen. Perfect to spray on boots, tails and croups for dazzling shine. KAREN BARNARD: Band aids (heel blisters)

31 Towels (for slobber and for boot polishing) Extra rubber bands/yarn (for braiding) Camera Aspirin (aches and pains) Sponge/Sweat scraper Chairs Gater Aide/Water Fly Spray Spare Parts (halter/girth/bridle/saddle pads/gloves-you never know when one of these will break or you will just need a spare due to weather) Nail clinchers (for loose shoes) Disinfectant Hand Wash (nice to have clean hands when you want to grab a bite between classes) Treats for Horses Hardware needed to hang feed and water buckets, buckets, fans and shavings Linament PAM MCGEOUGH: Baby Powder/Talc: Great when changing clothes and it's hot. Sprinkle on boot socks so the slide off easier. Squeaky clean saddles stop squeaking with a little puff :) ANNE ALOI: Clear swat for ears and bellies BETH RIPPEL: Mane and Tail detangler MORE NEXT MONTH! KEEP YOUR IDEAS COMING TO krowse@verizon.net Just remember, as hot as it s been, this was just last winter. February was just 6 months ago.
