1 Bree Breckenridge Councilmember Mitchell Englander's E-News - June 16, messages Councilmember Mitchell Englander <Councilmember.Englander@lacity.org> Reply-To: Councilmember Mitchell Englander <Councilmember.Englander@lacity.org> To: * LNAME <bree.breckenridge@lacity.org> Fri, Jun 16, 2017 at 12:55 PM E-News for the Week: June 16, View this in your browser RECENT LEGISLATION Making Los Angeles Business Friendly by Reducing Tax Filing Burden on Businesses... This week, I introduced a motion that would move the deadline for Los Angeles businesses to file taxes so that it aligns with state and federal filing

2 deadlines. Aligning the deadlines will benefit both the City and its businesses by reducing accounting and administrative costs. The current filing deadline for Los Angeles businesses makes no sense. We are shooting ourselves in the foot and making it harder to do business in our City when we ask businesses to file their taxes on a separate timeline from federal and state agencies. This motion will simplify the process, reduce costs, and allow Los Angeles businesses to focus on what they do best: bringing jobs and economic development to our communities. Read on... COMMUNITY NEWS Honoring the GHCHS Academic Decathlon National Championship Team in Council

3 This week, we congratulated and honored the students, coaches, teachers, and parents of Granada Hills Charter High School in City Hall for winning the National Academic Decathlon for the sixth time in seven years. Granada Hills Charter earned 54,507 points out of a possible 60,000 in the scholastic contest, beating out dozens of other high school teams for the title. Winning the National Academic Decathlon is a truly remarkable achievement that these amazing young people will be able to carry with them for the rest of their lives. Students have put in over 30,000 hours of hard work they studied and practiced up to 12 hours a day and skipped winter and spring vacations. Read on... Announcing Appointment of Nicole Bernson as Chief of Staff I announced the appointment of Nicole Bernson as Chief of Staff this week. Nicole replaces former Chief of Staff John S. Lee who served in that capacity since I was first elected in 2011 and stepped down from his position earlier this month to pursue private sector opportunities. I am proud to have the most committed and professional staff that a Councilmember could ask for. And, while John no doubt will be missed throughout the district, we all know Nicole to be as passionate and dedicated a public servant as there ever was. I have no doubt that Nicole will manage our staff through a smooth transition and ensure a seamless continuity of our office's operations. Read on... LAPD Devonshire Division Community Meeting... This week, I joined the LAPD Devonshire Division Burglary and Theft Units to discuss the most recent property crime trends and crime prevention techniques. As Chair of the Public Safety Committee, my office is continually working with City Departments, LAPD, local organizations and the community to address the ongoing issues within CD12.

4 During the meeting, the prevalence of knock-knock burglaries in the San Fernando Valley proved to be a concern with Granada Hills, Porter Ranch, and Chatsworth being the most affected areas in Council District 12. Knock-knock crews are sophisticated and are responsible for a high number of these crimes. Read on... Second Annual Reseda Blvd Summer Art Series... We are looking forward to the second annual Reseda Blvd Summer Series brought to you by CJ Berina with the support of a Department of Cultural Affairs Arts Activation Grant. This recurring event will take place on alternating Saturdays now through August 19th, with a series finale on August 26th. Last year's event was a multi-cultural extravaganza featuring live performances, artists, and local merchants. This year promises to be even better with food trucks, live music, an art walk and the best local talent. Come celebrate the San Fernando Valley on the Los Angeles' first Great Street, Reseda Blvd! The event is free and open to all ages. Saturday, June 24 6:00 pm 8906 Reseda Blvd. Northridge Click here to view the flyer.
