It looks as though we are finally getting a rest from the snowy, cold winter we have been having. Spring is almost here! March is a busy month for the programs department. Please make sure you check out the calendar so you don t miss out on any programs or outings. 2 March 2018 Welcome Committee Our next Welcome Committee will be held Monday March 12 th 2017 Just keep SWIMMING! Where: Craft Room The Swimming Club is postponed until May Pet Therapy Please be sure to keep a look out for the wagging tail of Didi on Tuesdays at 10:00AM Cultural Day Our multicultural day this month will be held on Thursday March 15 th 2018 We will be celebrating Italy! Some of the programs you can participate in are Learn a New Language, Italian Trivia and the Cultural Day Party!

4 Local & Community Happenings in March 2018 Winter Stations: Public Art Installations Winter Stations Design Competition transforms Lifeguard stations into playful art installations. Winter Stations features works from the winners of the International Design Competition and celebrates Toronto s winter waterfront landscape. FREE When: February 19, 2018 April 1, 2018 Where: the Beaches 1675 Lakeshore Blvd E, Toronto Toronto Light Festival at the Distillery District The Toronto Light Festival is a visual journey and imaginative cerebral adventure designed to entertain and inspire. During the cold, dark days of winter, City residents can experience one of the largest open-air lighting galleries in North America at the Distillery Historic District. The event exhibits the creativity of local & international light artists. FREE ADMISSION. When: January 19, 2018 March 4, 2018 Where: Distillery District, Toronto Drop in Clay Classes Explore the potential of working with clay (without the commitment) in one of the Gardiner Museum s weekly Drop In Classes. Drop-In Classes happen every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, with online registration opening at 10 am the morning of each class. Experiment with various hand building, wheel throwing, and decorating techniques under the guidance of one of our experienced artist instructors. You ll have access to a professional ceramics studio. Exercise your creativity and tap into the benefits of working with your hands. Tickets: $15 Adults, $12 Gardiner Friends, $12 Seniors/Students, $5 Child under 12, $5 Firing Fee / piece. 5 Local & Community Happenings in March 2018 Artistry in Silk: The Kimono of Itchiku Kubota Artistry in Silk celebrates the work of Itchiku Kubota ( ), an innovative artist whose spectacular creations gave new meaning to the art of kimono. His creative work expanded contemporary ideas of surface design and assured Kubota a legacy as an out-of-the-ordinary artist and artisan whose work stimulated the mind and delighted the eye. The exhibition presents 41 kimono designed and produced by Kubota over three decades, from 1976 to his death in Curated by Jacqueline Marx Atkins and organized by the International Chodiev Foundation. When: February 7, May 13, 2018 Where: Textile Museum of Canada- 55 Centre Ave Best of the West Food Tour Take a bite out of Dundas West and Ossington, a foodie enclave filled with trendsetting restaurants, eateries, and bars. For our "Best of the West" food tour, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of tastings from some of the best establishments in the neighbourhood. Tickets are &75.00 per person. When: March 15, 2018 Where: Queen Margherita Pizza, 772 Dundas St W, Toronto Canada Blooms Canada's largest flower & garden festival celebrates its 22nd anniversary. Experience a paradise bursting with acres of glorious gardens in full bloom, Canada s largest flower show, meet Canada s gardening and horticultural experts and shop til you drop in the Blooms Marketplace. 6 Local & Community Happenings in March 2018 Animal Farm The tyrannical Farmer Jones must be overthrown! How long will the animal utopia last when a charismatic new leader emerges? An innovative new adaptation of Orwell s classic satire bites just as much today as when it was first written. Show times are at 1:30pm and 7:30 pm. Adult Tickets price ranging from $35.00-$ When: March 17, 2018 Where: Young Centre for Preforming Arts- 50 Tank House Lane Eaton's Goes to War: Family, Memory & Meaning The First World War transformed Canada. During that war, 3,327 Eaton's employees enlisted to fight. Each time one of them was shipped overseas, a photo was displayed prominently in the Toronto store just steps from Mackenzie House. 2,000 of these portraits survived and have become part of the T. Eaton Company records at the Archives of Ontario. In commemoration of Canada's 150th birthday, Mackenzie House staff have been actively searching out accounts of the lives of these men and urging the public to come forward to share their stories of the soldiers with us. Come to our exhibit and find out. Layered universes of double meaning, hope, despair, humour, longing, madness, genius, and skillful virtuosity. All contained within innocuous 18 inch square shadow boxes. Cost: FREE. Volunteers at Sherbourne Place can spend time with your loved one while engaging in various leisure activities such as outdoor strolls in Allen Gardens, a visit to St. Luke s Church, a trip to the library or coffee shop, reading and reminiscing.
