1 DISTRICT NEWSLETTER EDITOR Diane Harper T H E F U T U R E O F R O T A R Y I S I N Y O U R H A N D S..O N E C H I L D A T A T I M E JANUARY is Club Service Month Issue 7 January 2010 The month of November saw the completion of 59 Club visits by your District Governor. I cannot recall a time in my life that I have enjoyed as much as I did meeting with the Boards and speaking to the clubs. What a wonderful experience! The enthusiasm of the Clubs in their Rotary activities is incredible and I am in complete awe at the number of activities in which our Clubs are participating. Our achievements as a District of 59 Clubs are limited only by the fact that our membership numbers have remained static since 2001 when the late Gayle Tully was District Governor and our own Richard D. King was Rotary International President. Think of how much more we could achieve with just a 10% increase in membership. If each club challenged 10 members to bring in one new member by July we would have, by far, the largest increase in membership ever in the District. On another note we are working diligently on our District Conference in Monterey April 23rd to the 25th at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. This hotel has just completed a $60 million dollar renovation on the rooms and facilities and another 5 million dollars upgrading the Del Monte Golf Course which is on the hotel grounds. If you enjoy golf you will want to join our Friday golf tournament. This Conference is to be a Getaway Weekend of Relaxation and FUN! Your Friday and Saturday afternoons will be free to take part in tours, especially a wine tour, see cooking demonstrations or just relax in the beautiful, new Spa at the Hotel. Spa packages will be available. Don t forget to wear your best western outfit on Saturday night and learn line dancing to the best of the western music. Hope to see lots of Denim and Diamonds, Cowboy Hats and Boots. More information to follow next month! DISTRICT CALENDAR January 1st Happy New Year!! Many of the clubs attended the City Council meeting of their area to receive the Proclamation and others also invited the Mayor to their club meeting to read the proclamation to the members. Thank you to all clubs that participated in this wonderful idea developed by Rotarian Ginger McDonald from the Los Gatos Sunrise Rotary Club. Let s keep Rotary in the News!

6 ROTARY DISTRICT 5170 Page 6 Campbell Rotary Club members dug into their pockets to help provide $656 for the Sacred Heart Community Services turkey drive last week. In addition, members Bob Yager, Bill Highley, Jerry Cummings, Bill Ellington and Rick Davis were on hand to help distribute food to the needy at SHCS on Nov. 25th. Santa s helper Mayor of Los Gatos Santa came to the December District Cabinet meeting with a bag of plush toy animals to give away to those Rotarians who attended the meeting. Each Rotarians was asked to give the toy to a needy child. I am happy to say all the toys were taken and given to a needy child. Also helping Santa was his favorite Elf in costume. Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary watched as the kids completed their ukuleles in Bruce McGuire s class. Richard Hoover, owner of a ukuleles business, made a guest appearance in class and showed kids how he builds ukes. East Oakland Sunrise donated toys for the Mayor s Toy Drive and bought a shiny new red scooter for Lend-A-Hand Foundation. Rotary Club of Saratoga committee members Larry Grace, Jim Oggerino and Chandra Venkatraman are all smiles as they receive grant application approval for another vital project. Watsonville Rotary Club Holiday Food Drive was kicked off by the Annual Area 7 Rotary Breakfast and Barrel Wrap. We hope to reach our goal of 2 million pounds of food and cash equivalent during the final two weeks. It is a big goal and so many businesses, churches and schools have stepped up to make sure families, kids and seniors don't go hungry during the winter months ahead. The Sunnyvale Sunrise Rotary Club that meets on Wednesday at 7:15 has moved it s meeting place to Le Boulanger, 305 N. Mathilda, Sunnyvale San Leandro Rotary Club were entertained by the Noteables from San Leandro High School. The 29 members of the choir gave a program that included classical, pop and traditional Christmas songs. The group is looking forward to a national competition in Anaheim, CA in April The club s donation of $250 was happily received by the group to help them on their way to Anaheim. Also The San Leandro Rotary Club has the distinction of participating in serving Thanksgiving lunch to the seniors at St. Leander s Hall for thirty years. That s a lot of turkey!! 7 ROTARY DISTRICT 5170 Compassionate Diplomacy Page 7 Rotarians attending the September 2nd Cabinet Meeting had the honor of hearing Wilson Kimeli Naiyomah speak about his life experiences. On September 11, 2001 before returning home to Kenya from his studies at Stanford University, he witnessed the terrorist attacks on New York City. After sharing his story with Maasai elders from his nomadic East African tribe, it was decided to send a herd of cows to the United States as a gesture of compassion. Because of the cost of importing the herd to the US would be greater than the value, the tribe set the cows apart vowing never to sell or slaughter them. A book was written by Wilson and Agra Deedy for children called 14 Cows for America explaining that cows are sacred to the Maasai and are a symbol of life to us. The story focuses on healing and finding solutions, I think children can best understand that, because their hearts are so innocent. The future of a more compassionate world starts with them, said Wilson. Wilson Naiyomah will begin his studies in February as a Rotary World Peace Fellow at the University of Queensland, Australia. He believes that world leaders need to practice compassionate diplomacy, to value the lives of people over political expediency and approach conflicts with a caring aspect. Rotary International embodies what I believe in my heart: that using compassion can help solve problems. Rotarians are ordinary people taking extraordinary actions to foster relations with countries around the world.
