GWRRA Chapter WA-V Dec 2016 Washington District Newsletter Meets 1 Thursday 6:00pm Chapter V Valley Wings News Chapter Directors: Meets 1st Thursday 6:00pm Joe & Patti Diambri Trotter s Restaurant Harvey Rd, Auburn, From the Chapter Director Where Did 2016 Go Another month gone by and a bit more excitement than last month! At our last meeting we had a great group attending. We had our normal visitors (as normal as they can be), Lori (Carmie s mom) the former Chapter A group which I now refer to as the FA group joining us, then we also had 7 members from Chapter Y! I believe the Chapter Y group may have been doing some investigating to see if we were all we are cracked up to be! Yes, we are maybe a bit cracked up but we enjoy it! Actually, I think they may have been doing a fit check to see how they fit in to our chapter seeing as they will be part of us after the first of the year! I think I can speak for the chapter and say they will fit in just fine and we look forward to them being a part of us! Welcome Chapter Y, you are now part of Chapter V!! Next up was the District Leadership Conference to which due to an earlier commitment We were not able to make, but thanks to Jeff Duffield we have the needed information to fill our calendars for next year! Again, thanks Jeff for gathering the needed information. Next up was the chapter social. It was a small group this time with only 9 attending, with 2 of them being our new members from Chapter Y Gary & Carolyn Andrew. Big thanks go out to Ken Glasby who set the social up! Thanks Again Ken! Anyone that left hungry it was their own fault as food was plenty. Now as I am writing this we have had our Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends, Our bellies are full, and the pot is boiling with the carcass in it for Turkey Soup on Saturday. Now that Thanksgiving is over and done with, it s time to think about December! You remember that month. It s the month in which you wait all year for, then when it s over you say thank goodness we got through that one! It s the month we spend and spend, then when the bills come in we say OH $#!*, what am I going to do now, or how am I going to pay for this! It s the month that that Jolly Ole Man makes his way for just that one special day and brings toys and Joy to all the kids out there! It s the month that special sacrifices were made in order for us to have this time of year to enjoy! The month of December is a fun busy one for me! Santa comes to our place, sets himself upon the steed, and travels around the area bringing joy and laughter to all that see him! This will be the 3 rd year for Santa using our steed to

run about the area giving joy, and he is going to be very surprised when he no longer has 2 wheels waiting for him but now will have 3! Your Chapter Directors Joe & Patti Diambri ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS: A Season for Lights December means Christmas, Christmas means lights, Lights mean Light Parades. December is the time for Light Parades. I love the light parades whether in December, or in July at the District Convention, or at Wing Ding. I learned some valuable lessons this year being in the Wing Ding light parade. Bikes that had their lights permanently installed scored higher. With all my effort and over 1500 LED s on my bike, I still did not place in the top 3 in the moving lights category. Since my first light parade at the 2014 District Convention in Lynden I have steadily evolved and changed my set up. I have gone from glow sticks to LED Christmas lights hooked to an inverter to 3 color LED non waterproof light strings to now multicolor RGB waterproof strings. This past District Convention I got first place in moving lights with my Now with the 1800 I am stepping it up another couple notches after my showing at Wing Ding. Here are the key things in preparing for the light parades. Wiring: the wiring is the challenging thing. Trying not to create a rats nest of wires is tough. The lights need power

from a switched source. Either power that comes on when you start the bike, or power that comes on with a switch or switches. For the most part you will not ride all the time with your LED s on unless they are the color that improves your visibility to other drivers. The next key is Switches. I have two switches, one for my everyday LED s and one for the Parade Lights. With each bike, your choices of locations for switches is different. The most logical and easiest is the switch sets that sit on top of your brake and clutch fluid reservoir. These are expensive so the cost could deter this option. With my I have a small area on the right lower fairing that I have put two waterproof lighted switches. The next key is deciding on the location of your lights. I am slowly getting permanently installed Parade lights installed on the bike. My only reservation for not going all out is it makes the bike harder to keep clean. I am preferring to put the lights in hidden areas away from the open surfaces that need to be cleaned often. To make a good showing at just a couple parades a year, my choice is to have my light parade lights set up to install with tape so they can be easily removed. My next big improvement is to cut and solder together sections of lights together with wire so that each area of the bike is a custom fit. December 3 rd is the day for the Olympia Toy Run and the Puyallup Santa Parade. Both of these events are perfect for bikes decked out in lights. The next event is the Chapter D Festival of Lights parade in Montesano. The tough part of activities during this time of year is the weather. Raining and cold or just cold. You will have to be prepared to endure the elements. Frog Toggs and Heated gear is a must. If not this year, plan to join us next year for these fun events. 4 From the Chapter Educator: December Newsletter If you have not given me your completed and updated N.7 or N.10 form (LEVELS) - PLEASE DO! Please give me its paper form or send its electronic form (preferred method) to me (jedeot84@gmail.com) as soon as you think about. I would like to get those mileage pins to you so you can show off another SAFE year of driving and your continued commitment to SAFE DRIVING. You might also need to update your SAFE driving information like Motorists Awareness (MA), First Aid, CPR, or ARC training. Remember that this training expires over time as does your skill level. If you need the electronic N.7 form please: 1. Go to the National GWRRA home web site: 2. Key or search for "rider ed forms" in the search field & clicked on the "Search" button 3. Scroll down to "formlist" & click on the link that will take you to the forms available or click this link: ( 4. Now, select the specific form you need (for LEVELS I, II, III select the N.7 REP Level I-III Application) or if you only need to update information please use the N.10 Update form: (N.10DataUpdate-RenewalFormRev9_24_13.doc) 5. Fill out the information you would like to update and send me the electronic form or "hard copy" the completed to me either electronically, in person or snail mail If you want a direct link to the "formlist" use: Helmet care 101 If your helmet is more than 5 years old? IT IS TIME TO REPLACE IT DON Ts: The integrity of a motorcycle helmet can be compromised with a single drop on a hard surface. Don t leave it on the ground, where it can be accidentally kicked, stumbled over, or invaded by some of nature s creatures (ants, spiders, etc.). Don t leave it on the seat or any other location on the bike where it can be easily knocked off. Be careful not to strike solid objects while carrying it. Carry your helmet by reconnecting the chin strap and grasp it by that or the chin bar rather than trying to cradle it under an arm. STORING your helmet: If you keep your helmet safe, it s more likely to keep you safe. Store High & Dry: When not in use, a motorcycle helmet should be allowed to dry out on the inside and then stored somewhere away from the elements. Keep the helmet in a safe location where it is not likely to get dropped, kicked, scratched, or otherwise damaged. Avoid storage near gasoline, cleaning fluids, exhaust fumes, or excessive heat, and do not leave items inside that may soil (e.g., sweat-soaked gloves) or compress the inner lining. Keep it Clean: Like many other accessories, keeping a helmet clean after use helps to prolong its life. Pay close attention to the air ducts and be careful not to damage passageways when removing debris, and do not use a sharp object for cleaning. Exterior: Use soap and water and a soft rag, not Windex or some other type of

corrosive cleaner. Interior: Non-scented drier sheets can be used to remove odors. Otherwise, a wet rag with a little soap applied to it will do the job. Check your helmet with regularly: Perform a periodic inspection of the helmet s major components: GWRRA Chapter Educator JOHN E. DOUGHTY Greetings from Chapter Couple Greetings In November the District put on a Leadership Workshop in Buckley. It was led by Mike Briggs and Roy McKenzie. There was a very good turn out from Chapters all over the state. Mike and Roy led some very good discussion/classes during the morning session. This type of learning got everyone involved and thinking, giving everyone a chance to participate and share ideas. Geared mainly around how to improve our Chapters and make it more fun for everyone. After some lunch provided and served by the District Staff, we had a few more classes in the afternoon. The ones I went to were on the roles and duties of the Chapter Officers. The key message passed to us from our District leaders is Have Fun. Push the envelope and try new things, get your Chapter members involved in new ideas and activities. Greet everyone that attends your Chapter Gatherings with a big smile and a welcome. We can grow our numbers if we are seen as a Fun Welcoming group of likeminded people. Our Goldwing s brought us together, our friendship keeps us together. Jeff and Cindy

Motorist Awareness THE SAFE SPACE CUSHION No, this is not the type of cushion you sit on to protect your rear from a wayward coiled spring. This is the suggested distance that would be between your vehicle and the one in front of you as you travel down the road. Many references are made that this distance should be determined by the four second rule. That is to say, when you see the vehicle in front of you pass a stationary object next to the road you should start counting the seconds (on thousand one, one thousand two, etc) until you vehicle passes that same spot. If the count is less than 4 seconds, maybe you are following too close. Now some people exclaim aw come on now, that is a big gap and I will agree until you are the person in front of the individual who is following too close in case of an emergency stop. Previously we were instructed to determine the distance between vehicles as a number of car lengths governed by the speed we were traveling. Then it became the suggested 3 second rule. Something has occurred to start considering the 4 second rule. Could it be that drivers are becoming more distracted? Researchers have shown that there are 3 components of stopping a vehicle. 1. Perception seeing a hazard and recognizing the need to brake (if you are quick on your reflexes this is about three quarters (.75) of a second. 2. Reaction amount of time to move the foot from the accelerator to the brake (again for the quick of reflexes this is about three quarters (.75) of a second. 3. Execution bringing that vehicle to a stop which depends on how fast you are traveling, what you are driving, and the conditions of the road. Now, for arguments sake, let s consider a situation where a person with great reflexes (possibly a younger individual because we know how advanced years affect our reactions) is following a motorcyclist and using the 4 second rule. The motorcyclist suffers a blown out tire and consequently goes down. During that event the driver following the motorcyclist had been distracted for some reason for only 2 seconds. Then the driver looks up and sees that the biker had gone down. Consider the above 3 components. If we add in the.75 seconds for Perception and another.75 seconds for Reaction that only allows that driver one half (.50) of a second to bring the vehicle to a stop. I believe the fallen biker and the motorcycle would become a major speed bump. I realize this is a selected event, but we have to realize that there are so many distractions that take our minds away from the primary task of safe driving. Let us practice motorist awareness either as a rider or as we follow one.. Vic Parr Motorist Awareness Coordinator

From Jeff, Chapter Ride coordinator Due to the incumbent weather there wasn t any rides to report on for the month of November. Check us out for next month Parade of Lights and other Christmas Parades. FROM THE CHAPTER TECHNICAL ADVISOR: Greetings everyone. I hope you had a great day with family and friends yesterday! This month I just wanted to let you know what was going on with my Wing. When I started it up a week ago Saturday, the dash was saying that the trunk was open. I checked the dash and found that it was indeed closed. So, on my way to Honda I noticed that the neutral light was on also. I turned the key off and attempted to reset what ever the problem was but on restart it didn't do anything. The neutral light was still on but when I let the clutch out it would go dim. Off to Honda... Now get this, after talking to Dale, he made me realize that my Wing is just one big computer. With the miles of wiring that these things have, it's just a matter of time before something happens. Usually it's when someone has tied into the stock wiring and something on the bike screws up. So, get this, after some troubleshooting they concluded that it was part of the reverse module that went bad. I never would have seen that coming. The bike should be fixed today (Friday). Fortunately, it's covered by warranty and it had nothing to do with the small amount of accessories added to my bike. My 2014 Gold Wing came with a three year warranty and at some time before the warranty runs out, I will renew it for another four years. Money well spent! So, if you have a GL1800, watch what you do as far as adding accessories to the stock wiring. Use a accessory fuse block whenever possible and always use fuses to protect them

Ken/Marion Recipe Corner - December Browned Butter Cinnamon Rolls Makes 10 Ingredients: 1 1/4 cups whole milk warmed (about 110 F)

1/2 cup superfine sugar, divided 1 tablespoon active-dry yeast 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup unsalted Organic Valley butter, softened 2 large eggs, room temperature and lightly beaten 6 cups bread flour filling: 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted Organic Valley butter, softened 1 cup superfine sugar 1 tablespoon cinnamon glaze: 1/2 cup unsalted browned Organic Valley butter, cooled 3 tablespoons whole milk 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 to 3 1/2 cups confectioner sugar, sifted Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. Pour milk and half of sugar into a mixing bowl and stir together. 3. Sprinkle yeast over milk and sugar and allow mixture to sit for 4 to 5 minutes (yeast should begin to bubble and foam). 4. Stir in remaining sugar, salt, butter, and eggs. Begin adding flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring to incorporate after each addition. 5. Once all the flour has been added, dump mixture onto a clean and lightly floured surface and knead dough for 5 to 7 minute or until smooth and elastic, adding more flour, 1 teaspoon at a time as needed. 6. Once smooth dough has formed, place dough into a lightly greasy bowl, cover with a clean, damp towel and place in a warm area until dough has doubled in size. About 1 hour and 20 minutes. 7. Place both butters for filling and the glaze into a medium saucepan and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until butter begins to toast, brown and produce a nutty smell. 8. Divide the butter into two separate bowls and allow them each to cool, about 20 minutes. In another small bowl whisk together the superfine sugar and cinnamon. 9. Once dough has doubled in size, punch down the center and turn onto a clean and lightly floured surface. Roll dough out into a 12 x 19 rectangle and about 1/4 thick. Generously brush the entire surface of the dough with one of the bowls of browned butter. Sprinkle evenly with cinnamon-sugar mixture. Tightly and evenly roll rectangle from one end to the other and gently pinch the seam shut. Place cinnamon roll log seam side down and cut into 10 even cinnamon rolls. 10. Place cinnamon rolls into a lightly greased baking dish and cover with a clean, damp towel. 11. Store in a warm place until cinnamon rolls double in size about 1 hour. 12. Uncover and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. 13. Remove from oven and cool for 10 minutes. 14. For the glaze: Stir milk, vanilla and cinnamon into the butter until fully incorporated. Stir sugar into the butter mixture, 1/4 cup at a time until fully incorporated and mixture is smooth. 15. Pour ½ of the glaze over the slightly cooled cinnamon buns and allow cinnamon buns to continue to cool, about 30 minutes. Drizzle remaining glaze over cinnamon buns and serve..
