1 Mountain Loin Gazette Washington Region I ~ October 2013 ~ District WA Chapter WA M, Washington Words from our Chapter Director Hello everyone, Where oh where as summer gone? From 92 to 72 within 24 hours and now it s holding a steady 60 with wind and rain. Mother Nature is trying to make us put our bikes away instead of being able to get out there and ride enjoying our beautiful area. I want to give a BIG Thank You to all the GWRRA, Chapter M members who came out and supported the Kiwanis Apple Valley Bike Ride this past weekend of 9/28 & 9/29/13. The weather was cool and it looked like it wanted to rain on us the whole trek. However, we escorted the bike riders through the valley and back. Thank you to Richard Skiens, Dick LaFortune, Wally Wallingford, Don Brown, Michael Turner, Jan Jones and Arlie Holden you guys ROCK! They were at East Valley Middle school by 730 am on Saturday and back again in the Christian school on Sunday morning again at 730 am. They spent the day escorting the bike riders from place to place throughout the valley. It was a great weekend of adventure. Again, Thank you guys! If I missed someone, please except my apologizes I ve been ill with a very bad cold and I don t know if it was the medication or just being ill that is making me forgetful. We only have a few more adventures planed for the rest of the year other than our monthly meetings and our Socials. Saturday, October 19 th if Leadership classes in Buckley WA, the chapter encourages all higher education of the GWRRA program and if you attend the chapter will reimburse you the registration fee. Sunday, October 27 th is Chapter Q s Halloween Dance@ Poodle Dog Restaurant in Fife, WA, $25 per couple or $20 for single, with prizes for best costume, 50/50, Brown Bag Auction and Desert Auction. Flyer/Registrations on the counter at the meeting, Saturday, October 5 th. Remember to ride your bike or trike to the meeting this month, we are taking a group picture that will be posted on our website. Please pass the word so all can attend. We have a few things to discuss at the meeting regarding our Christmas dinner on Saturday, December 14 and other matters regarding the chapter. Even though riding season is winding down and many of you are preparing your bikes for winter, there are still plenty of fun Chapter M activities on tap just for you! So come on out to the meetings and find out WHAT S HAPPENING! The Thursday Night Socials, Tuesday morning coffee group, and of course our monthly Chapter Meetings continue all year long! Like I said last month we have lots of new folks showing up at our functions and meetings and that s great! But we need more to keep our organization strong. So remember to invite your friends and they will see firsthand what a fun group we are and what great things we re doing in our communities in the name of GWRRA! And when that new person comes through the door be sure to extend to them a friendly handshake and a warm welcome so they ll keep coming back for more! I m looking forward to seeing all of you at The Branding Iron at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5th for our next Chapter M Meeting! Mark it on your calendars now! You won t want to miss the fun!!! 3 Rider Education You Must be Crazy to Ride a Motorcycle How many times have you heard this? You have to be completely crazy to ride a motorcycle. Those things are dangerous! How often have we heard that? Zealous four-wheelers are bent on saving us from our own stupidity. Of course our bulbs are dim. Anyone bright wouldn t go near one of those two-wheeled death machines. It s too risky, they intone piously. In a small part, they are right. There is risk involved in operating a motorcycle. There s also risk involved in driving on a freeway, even in a tank. The trick is to manage the risks and to not take dumb risks. One of the main keys to managing risks is to take a motorcycle rider course, and to keep the mental and physical skills we learn sharp. Many skills are lost in six months if they aren t practiced. Knowing good cornering and curve-riding techniques doesn t do us any good if we don t practice them. Knowing our limits, the limits of our machines, and the limits of our environment and riding within those limits is also critical. We must remember that those limits change constantly and adapt our riding style to conform to them. Superior riders never get themselves into situations requiring superior skills. Taking dumb risks is asking for trouble. If we keep pushing our limits, we will eventually exceed them, and the consequences can be devastating or even fatal. Riding faster and faster though a familiar curve can spell disaster when we ve pushed our traction to the limits and there s something unexpected in the road halfway through the curve. Riding fast in the rain just because we re in a hurry makes no sense when we know we can t stop quickly. Slowing down and putting distances between us and a hazard is sensible risk management. Replacing worn tires helps keep us safely stuck to the road. Part of the challenge of motorcycling is risk management, and the sport wouldn t be very enjoyable if we wrapped ourselves in cotton and surrounded ourselves with a cocoon of safety devices. However, the sport is more fun if we don t have to worry about dangers we create for ourselves.
