1 Washington District News Letter REGION I NOVEMBER, 2014 Gold Wing Road Riders Association We welcome all riders, no matter what make or model you ride! Hello to all, I hope everybody has a happy Halloween and a safe one. If you missed leadership training in Buckley this past Saturday I'm sorry for you. We had a great time. I need to shout out Thank You to several different people. Mr. Roy McKenzie leadership Coordinator, you did a fabulous job! A great time, great classes, thank you for your dedication to GWRRA and our members. We appreciate all your hard work. I have to say I think I am the luckiest district director for having such an outstanding team. Team, you did a great job on Saturday. Each one of you! Thank you for supporting and being there and doing your part. I appreciate all of your dedication to our district and our members. A big shout out of thanks goes to all of our instructors for the day, thank you, to each and every one of you. Chapter O, what a great lunch you prepared for us, thank you ever so much! From cooking to cleaning up, we just appreciate you so much, thank you, thank you. It takes a lot of people to put on a leadership conference like that. The most important part I have to shout out is a thank you to all of our members for coming and participating. What a great day we had and the time we shared. I just want you all to know how much your district appreciates you, thank you. I hope it was as much fun for you all as it was for all of us. For those that were not able to be there we announced where district rally 2015!!! We are going back to Port Townsend. The rally will be July 16th, 17th and 18 th. Our theme is going to be "Happy Days - return to the 50s". So you definitely want to get out your poodle skirts, saddle shoes, white T-shirts, and hair gel. Get it all ready. We're going to have lots of fun fun fun!!! The District Team has a lot of fun stuff planned. When we get all the details worked out we will be sharing them with every body. Each month I will have something in the newsletter about our district rally. If you have any great ideas that you want to share get a hold of your district team or me. We will see what we can do. The other thing that I think is really exciting is, we have decided to start the traveling trophy again. If you are a CD or an assistant CD we invite you to our staff gathering to get the traveling trophy started. To start the trophy traveling we have decided 1) You need to come to the district gathering 2) wear your chapter colors. Your chapter will go into a drawing. The chapter that wins the drawing will get to take the trophy to their gathering. This traveling trophy is not replacing the mascots. We still want the chapters to go to the other chapter gatherings and steal the mascots. The traveling trophy is just one more thing that we can have fun with. Our District gathering is the second Saturday of the month. If you need directions please get a hold of me and I'll give you address and details. 2 Washington Assistant District Directors west side Garry and Maxine Alexander I would like to Congratulate Lynda and Pete Goetz for taking over Washington Membership Enhancement Coordinator.We just finished Washington Leadership Training and I must say it went great. We have such a strong group of Assistant s and Chapter Directors we are going to have fun this year. And, Maxine is feeling a little bit better. She is having a lot of pain in her chest. 3 Hello from Your (New) District Membership Coordinators Pete and Lynda Goetz Pete and I are your new Washington District Membership Coordinators. If you have trouble pronouncing our last name, just leave out the letter o -- sounds like Gets! Although being chosen for this District position is exciting, we want to first be recognized as GWRRA members and your friends. Garry Alexander is doing his best to mentor us on using the right applications and forms. Hopefully, we will be up and running by this time next month. As Chapter WA-X s membership coordinators, we know the value of keeping in touch with the chapter members, both active and non-active. Just by making contact by phone or , we are able to promote the TEAM approach to encourage participation in the chapter events. It also lets the members know we can help out with life s surprises or answer any GWRRA questions they may have. The dictionary defines the word coordinate as: To bring into a common action, so as to act together in a smooth concerted way; harmonize. As District Membership Coordinators, we can t think of better goals! The Leadership classes held in Buckley on October 18 were invaluable. However, it was the continuing words of the instructors and other District officers that resounded: We are here to help that will be remembered and depended upon to move forward with our new responsibilities as your Membership Coordinators. 3

4 Vic Parr motorcycle awareness CONSPICUITY EDUCATING THE MOTORISTS riding days. The riding season for many motorcyclists is slowly coming to an end. We, as motorcyclists, have to bear in mind that the general motorist public will not be in the habit of watching out for us as much as previously during pleasant Some recommendations were submitted that should be considered by all concerned parties: Educate operators of other vehicles to be more conscious of the presence of motorcyclists. Remind motorcyclists that they may be overlooked and provide defensive strategies for overcoming this situation. Include questions regarding motorcyclists on driver s license tests and include information in driving manuals. Include the completion of a motorcyclist awareness class in sanctions against motorists found guilty of violating a motorcyclist s right-of-way. Adequate funding needs to be devoted to the development and implementation of motorist awareness issues. 4

5 Roy and Pearl McKenzie Leadership Membership Training Whew! It is over. Not really. We all had a great time doing the Leadership Workshop in Buckley. Like most experiences, it was a time of learning and very gratifying to say the least. We want to take a bit and just say thank you to all of the instructors who gave of their time, talent and knowledge to present all of the classes. Great job! All of you! Secondly, we want to thank all of you who attended the workshop and participated in the classes. With out you none of this would have been possible. We look forward to doing this workshop all over again next year. Speaking of which, if any of you have any suggestions as to ways to improve the venue, please let us know. After all, it is all for you that we do it. Learning is a continuous process and we need to embrace the opportunity whenever it presents itself to us. In GWRRA there are many programs that we, the membership, can take advantage of. The Leadership Training Program has a wide variety of topics for knowledge enhancement as well as the Rider Education program, which also has a lot of information that will help broaden our knowledge base and improve our skill level. If you have an interest in knowing more about any of these possibilities please let us know. We are all here to serve you, the members, to make your GWRRA experience more rewarding to you. Remember our GWRRA MOTTO; Friends For Fun, Safety and Knowledge. The more you know the better it gets. As Your leadership team, we are constantly looking for better ways to serve you. So, as I stated earlier in this piece, let us know of any suggestions that you have that would enable us to serve you. 6 Hello Washington District Dennis & Terri Black Fall has arrived?? Dennis & Terri Black It is difficult to realize that fall is here already. The weather has been fairly mild and warm this year. But don t let that deceive you, what little rain fall we have had, is plenty to send us on one wild ride. At night, it has also been cold enough to start turning the leaves different beautiful color, beautiful as long as they stay on the tree. A definite trap for us while we are riding, and even driving down the road. All it takes is one decent sized leaf under the front tire. The winds are definitely picking up and that means we need to be aware of falling branches and pine needles on and around the road surface. And let s not forget about our furry friends. The animals that hibernate are trying to finish stocking up or eating everything that s not moving faster than they are. Those that don t are migrating down to the lower elevations for better feeding grounds and shelter. Either way they all spell trouble for us if we are unlucky enough to cross their paths. Kids are fully back in school now, and as we know, are not looking out for any vehicles. They are starting to bundle up with their new sweaters and jackets that just make them less observant to what s not directly in front of them. As it is getting colder we know that black ice is looming on the horizon and directly behind that is freezing rain, then the dreaded 4 letter word. SNOW. How are your emergency supply s holding up? Have you restocked everything you borrowed from it? Or is a mouse planning on using them as its winter supply? Do you have fresh gas for the Generator? Fresh batteries in all of your flash lights? Don t forget to restock your vehicle s emergency kit. It s just as important as your home s. But don t feel too bad that the nice weather riding season is over. It time to go out to the garage and complete a thorough inspection (T-CLOCK) on your beautiful motorcycle or trike. Make a shopping list of things that you need to change, repair, fix or replace. If you take a little time now to order the parts and supplies you need, everything will be in place for when you re ready to work on it this winter. Don t forget your trailers and sidecars.
