ASSISTANT DISTRICT DIRECTORS From the desk of your Asst. DD and acting MEC Hi All, I hope you are having a safe riding season. Now that the riding Season is here I feel this is a great article to help get you thinking about riding safety. This will give you more to think about when out there riding and may save your life. Please enjoy it as much as I did. Target Fixation [The following article is an excerpt from an accident case study found at, I have modified it use but credit must be given to the original author for writing a powerful lesson for all motorcyclists. Tom Denny, WA-L Rider Educator] Sometimes we riders tend to minimize the risks we hear about. Take for example what every student of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation has heard about 'target fixation'. This is the phenomena wherein our motorcycles tend to go the direction in which we are looking and is usually described with an example familiar to all, that if you see a pothole in the street ahead of you and don't take your eyes off it, you probably going to hit it. While that is true, it is also too trivial an example to get our attention appropriately. We are left with the opinion that 'target fixation' is of trivial concern because we all think that if we try, we can avoid that pothole while looking at it (maybe). The following is a story that may change your opinion about 'target fixation' for life. This is a real life case study. It may just save your life if you take it seriously. The victim, Karen Miller has authorized this case study to be made public. It was Sunday, November 12, 3:30 p.m., near Cleveland, Texas. There were four of us, riding three motorcycles, out for a ride in the country. Elaine, Road Captain, was in the lead on 2

her Honda Magna (700 cc's), riding in the 'left track'. Karen Miller was in the 'slot' (right track) riding her Honda Shadow (500 cc's), and I was riding 'drag' (last) on my Honda Goldwing (1200 cc's) and carrying Judy, a guest from Canada, as a passenger. We had been on the road since 11:15 that morning and were on the return leg of the trip. It was a clear though nippy day (60 degree's) with mild traffic on the country road at the time. The road had many gentle curves to it and nobody seemed to have any difficulty negotiating them. We typically drove at posted speed limits and were at approximately 55 MPH at the time of this accident. I mentioned that Karen was riding in the 'slot' position. We do this with all new members to our group because it is the safest position and we watch how they handle themselves in the group before letting them take any other position. This position keeps the newer drivers as far away from a potential head-on collision as possible. All three bikes had just come out of a mild right turning curve. Road conditions were nearly perfect with the exception that the lanes seemed to be slightly narrower than one might expect. A white pickup truck was approaching us traveling at somewhat below normal speed in the opposite lane. As we completed the curve I noticed that Karen was in the left track rather than the right one (not unusual after negotiating a curve) but instead of moving to the right to get back into the 'slot' she seemed to be aimed directly for the white truck. She had apparently swung a little wide in the curve, saw the truck, 'target fixated' on it (locked her eyes on it) and panicked. She quickly crossed the centerline of the road and was headed for a collision with the truck. She was leaning towards the right but the bike kept moving left, counter-steering totally forgotten! The driver of the truck took very aggressive action to try to avoid the accident and pulled the truck sharply to his right. This successfully avoided a head-on collision but Karen still sideswiped the truck, hitting it at its left-front quarter-panel and all along its left side from front to back. The combined speed at impact was in excess of 90 MPH. 3

Karen survived this accident but just barely. I'll spare you all the gruesome details but suffice to say that over the next five years she had 22 surgeries. Painful surgeries such as skin grafts, muscle grafts and bone grafts. She actually lost four inches of her left femur that was replaced with bone from her pelvis. She has spent months in the hospital and while her recovery has been miraculous she will never, ever be the same as she was before the accident. Because taking safety information casually can put you in Karen's place or worse, the information posted here is meant to influence the way you think and act and not to be casually considered. Karen had years of experience and had recently completed her MSF training. She had insisted that her boyfriend attend the MSF class before he could ride with us; she thought about safety in a serious way and surrounded herself with people that she knew to be safety conscious in the extreme. She had heard her MSF instructor talk about 'target fixation' and understood what it was all about - but apparently did not relate it to anything but pothole avoidance. Target Fixation is not so trivial as that. You should know it now without any doubt at all and knowing that hopefully means someday we might meet on the road and stop for a chat. We are after all, family. Ride Safe. [Ask yourself what Karen could have done to avoid this accident? What would you do in a similar situation?] Bob Minor Asst. DD and Acting MEC 4

ASSISTANT DISTRICT DIRECTORS Jesse and Eva Valentine OLD TIMES I remember when Eva and I joined GWRRA at a mall show in Olympia brand new to the world of big bikes. We had a GL1200 with about 4500 miles. We had that bike for five years and put 500 miles on it and thought we were killing ourselves. Since that time we have had the great fortune to be directors for WA-I and WA-Z. In that time we had met tons of great people and been to many places too hard to remember them all. I have had dinner with member's in Germany and o so many wonderful people in these United States of America brand new or long time members we always had a great time. I see a down fall in our members in the past few years and I think it is because we have lost the things that made this a fun place to meet people and enjoy our friends. We, as in you and I, need to find that fun place again. We need to go and meet with our friends and let them know we are still here. Back when we joined we had 22 chapters and I believe we currently have 13 remaining. Chapters A/I at that time had the most members. I know we are getting older and it hurts a little when we get off that beautiful machine. And they are beautiful machines. So go out and have fun. I know that we all don't quite understand all of these for the better changes, but we can still go out and ride just as we did before and not worry so much about the little things that National is changing. We as WA District need new and energetic leaders to keep this going. We need leaders that have Not been leaders in the organization before with new ideas about how we can get our members out to functions. We need to call our old friends and ask them to come to the District Rally in Cashmere on July 19/21. This is a great place. We have chapters cooking for us and some great rides put on from chapter WA-N of Spokane. You still have time to pre-register before July 1, 2018 and its only 25 bucks. The flyer is on the District web site and so much more info is there. Please use this opportunity to have a great time and we will see you there. You don t want to miss the bike games this year. Jesse Valentine Your assistant District Director WA call me We are in it for Friends Fun and knowledge (Safety First) 5

DISTRICT TREASURER RALLY UPDATE We have most everything in place for the 2018 Washington District Rally, Happy Halloween, in Cashmere July We thought we were going to have the Canadian Drill Team but they don t have enough members available for this year. Darn, we were really looking forward to having them. We have got all the permits with the city approved and are ready to go. The games are ready to go, the decorations are ready to be put up, campsites are ready to be decorated, the bikes are ready to be cleaned for the show, the Fire Department is ready to lead us in the light parade, what s left. You!! We need you to register for the rally and come join us for all the FUNNNN!! The deadline for preregistration is July 1, which is rapidly approaching. Last year, we signed up for a Square account so now we are able to take your credit cards for the rally. There is a form attached to the flyer to be submitted along with your registration. I hope to have the schedule out very soon. We are still working on some entertainment so when we get that finalized, we will send the schedule out to the CDs and have them forward to all of you. Chapter Treasurers: Half the year has gone. Are you using the Income and Expense program from GWRRA? If not, why not? It is really easy to use. I use it all the time. It makes it really easy to keep track of your funds and a running total of your checking account. We plan on having a seminar at the Leadership Training this fall for all the treasurers. 9 Rider Educator NEW RIDER EDUCATOR Looks like this year is going to be a busy year for Rider Education. Since the new position of Ride Coordinators have to be certified Road Captains, we are trying to put together several classes. I know several Chapters have already expressed interest in getting most of their members certified, so I have begun to put together a District Team to meet the needs. I have asked a couple people to step forward and join the District team to make training more available to our members across the state. As soon as it s official I ll spread the word, so stay tuned! If your chapter has a need for any training, please let me know. Keep in mind that there are several topics in the GWRRA University that encompass all other aspects of running a happy and successful Chapter! Ride safe and have FUN! 10 MOTORIST AWARENESS Taken from an article written by our MAP National Directors: Did You Know. The question was asked, What can one person do for Motorist Awareness?. To be honest we, the Motorist Awareness Program Directors, are so busy trying to make presentations and tools available that we sometimes forget that our best asset is YOU! Everyone who rides a motorcycle or is a riding enthusiast is critical to the Motorist Awareness Program. Remember, you are all Motorist Awareness Coordinators! You don t have to be an ITCP, Dale Carnegie or Toastmasters graduate, have a table at a rest stop, or host a drill team to be effective. Here are some really simple things one person can do: Take MAP trifolds to dealerships, restaurants, businesses, or places of worship. Take coloring pages to local schools or day care centers. Ride your motorcycle. Wear your vest. Place a MAP bumper sticker on your trash cans. Send a letter to your local newspaper about Motorist Awareness. Tell people about riding its risks and rewards, and why it s important for motorists to look for motorcycles. Wear an orange ribbon for Motorcycle Awareness. There are many more opportunities. Be creative and enjoy helping your fellow riders! Help Us Survive the Ride! Mike & Barri Critzman itsawingthing@hotmail.com Vic Parr 8

Leadership/Membership Training Roy and Pearl McKenzie Did each of you enjoy and benefit from attending the Rider Education Workshop held In February? We sincerely hope you all took something back to your home chapters that would benefit your members who were not able to attend. First of all, I want to tip my hat to Mindy Greenwood, our assistant District trainer, Dennis and Terri Black, District Educator. and for ALL of the Instructors for an excellent program, well put together and executed. And above all, you our members who came and participated. You made it a success. THANK YOU This workshop was taken from the new training modules that GWRRA has made available to us to improve that way we do training and proves the value of member participation in the discussion. It adds a depth to the learning process that was not there with the old style, not that it was bad. IF, any of you who were there has any thoughts about the workshop, we are open to hear from you. There was a survey form, prepared by Mindy and passed out to you, It s not too late to return them. We value your thoughts. Be Safe, Roy McKenzie, District Trainer WA. 10

Leadership/Membership Training Stress Free Ride Back in October I was able to facilitate a module called "Stress For Less". I will confess that I struggle sometimes riding with new people. I am always wanting the ride to be perfect, we all stay together all the time, everyone has fun, we get to where we need to be at a certain time. It does become stressful. This year I made a commitment that I was going to do more "Meet Up" rides and go with the flow. Most of you have seen s from me over the last 6 weeks inviting you on a ride. These rides really have no time line and we usually just know in a general direction of where we are going. We have been lucky to have different members from different chapters show up for these rides and they have been wonderful. Everyone is spontaneous and ready to just see where the ride takes us. I even led one and took a wrong turn, everyone followed and we wound up having a great ride, which of course ended at Dairy Queen. I share this because some have questioned the new Modules and how they help with riding, I believe it gives us time at the trainings to reflect on our own responsibility in whether we have fun on the rides or not. Are we trying to control too much, are we being spontaneous? I would encourage you all to take the time to attend the trainings put on in the fall and winter and come at them with a different mindset. That being said, there is nothing that can take away from a skills training like ARC or TRC for safety on the bike. Be sure to watch for those being put on also and go every couple of years, just see how you do, it can be a fun time. Mindy Greenwood Assistant Leadership Trainer. 11

MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT COORDINATOR Time to get ready for the 2018 WA Rally The riding season is here and time to get ready for the WA Rally. How can we have fun if you are not there? Remember all the good times you have had in the past. Make them happen again by getting out there and being part of that FUN. It's been said that 90% of life is based on just showing up! Good things can only happen if you are there! Ask yourself, do you make excuses why you shouldn't go or do you look for opportunities to go and have FUN? Do you make excuses for not attending a rally or can you hardly wait to get there? Every rally presents an opportunity to ride and see friends! They present opportunities to ride new roads and see old friends as well as meet new ones. The Washington State 2018 Rally is being setup so you can come have lots of FUN. Last year we had such a great time doing Christmas in July, we are doing it in the same place but a Halloween theme. So, if you have "been there and done that," THINK AGAIN! Remember, good things can only happen if you are there! See you at the Rally. Remember our Motto Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge Let s make Friends for Fun the best part of the 2018 Rally and keep thinking FUN FUN FUN, then go out and make it happen. 15 District Webmaster New man on board We appreciate all the hard work Ted Moore did as our previous Webmaster. He provided necessary security for the District staff and many articles outlining ways for us novices to protect our computer systems. Thank you, Ted. With this issue we give an initial introduction of Greg Dawson as our new WA District Webmaster. He also is currently the Oregon District Webmaster. Due to time constraints his initial comments for our newsletter are: I will at some point want to put a little something in the newsletter. Not sure I ll be ready for the June issue. I need to go head first into the District Website and get an understanding of what s been done and what needs to be done. I pride myself on being responsive no matter where in the world I am. As long as I have Internet access, the Washington District website will stay current. Greg Dawson -- # District Webmaster (503) greg@internetcafeusa.com 13

DISTRICT COUPLE OF THE YEAR From Jeff & Cindy, District COY Are you shy? That is a question I can say yes to, Cindy is also when in a crowd we do not know. Over the years I have gotten better at being more open around strangers but I am still very quiet. Cindy just does not like to go to small gatherings when she does not know anyone. After we went to a few Chapter events after joining GWRRA, we found everyone friendly and easy to get to know. We now have fun with all these new friends we have met. Going to other Chapter events has gotten easier over the past few years due to getting to know them at different functions. It takes time to meet everyone and learn their names. Now, how about going to big events like the District Rally or Wing Ding? Do we open up and say Hi? Talk to people we don t know? Get out of our comfort zone? As I mentioned in last month s article about being welcoming, are we going out of our way to meet that new person? Say Hi and get to know them? Unfortunately, I came across a person posting on a question asked on a Facebook Page for Gold Wing Riders. The question was Have you been to Wing Ding? Is it worth going? The person said they went to Wing Ding in Billings, it was their first one. They had the Newbie yellow buttons on and nobody talked to them or tried to make them feel welcome. They have dropped out of GWRRA and are not going back to another Wing Ding. We can t let this happen, we are all about having fun and making new friends. I challenge us all to do better at being less shy and saying Hi to those who join us at our meetings and events. Jeff & Cindy Duffield District COY 14

DISTRICT AMBASSADORS GREETINGS TO THE DISTRICT Greeting Chapter Pod, The riding season is now in full swing. Check your bikes out and make sure everything is up to par. Also get out in a parking lot somewhere and do some slow speed turned and stop. If you haven t ridden for the winter your skills might be a bit rusty and you want them up to full strength before you put your better half on the back with you. We have a lot coming up you can do. And remember do only what you are comfortable with and have time for. June 2, along with the Blue Mountain Rendezvous with Chapter R in Walla Walla. The Bike Band and BBQ is out at the Harper Church on Sedgwick Road Port Orchard, June 3 rd at noon. If you ride you eat free. The Duck Hunt is June 9 th which is always fun. Please be sure to get your registrations in as soon as you can for the District Rally in Cashmere. July 19-22, so they can get a head count on everything they need to figure out. There is going to be something for everybody from Rides, to Light Parade and Show, the Bike Show, Bike Games, Bingo and good fun and friends. That s about it for now. Ken and Tami, your District Ambassador 15

GOOD OF THE ORDER PHILOSOPHY I read that 4,153,237 people got married last year. Not to cause any trouble, but shouldn't that be an even number? I find it ironic that the colors red, white, and blue stand for freedom until they are flashing behind you. When wearing a bikini, women reveal 90% of their body. Men are so polite they only look at the covered parts. Relationships are a lot like algebra. Have you ever looked at your X and wondered Y? America is a country which produces citizens who will cross the ocean to fight for democracy but won't cross the street to vote. You know that tingly little feeling you get when you love someone? That's your common sense leaving your body. Did you know that dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish? My therapist says I have a preoccupation with vengeance. We'll see about that I think my neighbor is stalking me as she's been Googling my name on her computer. I saw it through my telescope last night. Money talks... But all mine ever says is good-bye. You're not fat, you're just easier to see. If you think nobody cares whether you're alive, try missing a couple of payments. I always wondered what the job application is like at Hooters. Do they just give you a bra and say, "Here, fill this out?" I can't understand why women are OK that JC Penny has an older women's clothing line named, "Sag Harbor." My therapist said that my narcissism causes me to misread social situations. I'm pretty sure she was hitting on me. 20

My 60 year kindergarten reunion is coming up soon and I'm worried about the 175 pounds I've gained since then. Denny's has a slogan, "If it's your birthday, the meal is on us." If you're in Denny's and it's your birthday, your life sucks! The pharmacist asked me my birth date again today. I'm pretty sure she's going to get me something. 21
