1 Maple Valley Anthon Oto Charter Oak Ute Presents 501 South Seventh Mapleton, IA Issue #1 October 2017 RAMWRITE-UP TOGETHER AT LAST MVAO AND COU Began Whole Grade Sharing on August 23 The student body gathered in the high school gym on the first day of school. The Student Council provided each student with a T-shirt. Colby Seuntjens Rumors heard around the halls last yearhave come true. Whispers have now become a reality. Charter Oak-Ute has joined Maple Valley Anthon Oto for the school year. When the news was first released a collective gasp could be heard throughout the halls in both schools. Some were mad, some were excited, some were scared. No matter how they felt, all students were going to be in for a very big change. Teachers and administration have been a part of countless changes over the years. They knew acceptance would come in time. They encouraged students to have a positive, welcoming attitude. Near the end of last school year, MVAO student council members went and visited COU and spent a majority of the day with them. Later, COU came and visitied MVAO. All students spent the afternoon getting to know each other with various activities. These two meetings set the foundation for the upcoming school year. Fast forward to the first day of school. Students of the freshly named MVAOCOU were given matching t-shirts that read WE ARE RAMS as soon as they entered the school. Everyone filled the gymnasium for the annual assembly. There was a visible difference in the size of the student body. Throughout those first few days there was a tension that could be felt in the hallways and classrooms. The permanent change was sinking in as students were seeing each other in the classrooms for the first time. The following week it was like a whole different school. MVAO and COU kids were getting along as though they had gone to school together their whole lives. The anticipation was over and the transition was complete. This is how the school will be from now on, whether you were for it or against. We will all grow to be a family. Future generations will remember our grades as the first ones to be known as MVAOCOU. Many black eyes and boots were seen Tuesday due to it being injury day. As you roamed the halls on Wednesday, you saw many jersies and suspenders, considering it was being athletes and mathletes day. The halls were full of bright colors Thursday for class color day. Thrusday afternoon the high schoolers played iron man volleyball and powderpuff football. On Friday students and staff were decked out in maroon and gold to show their Ram spirit. Friday night lights shined on the football boys as they took on West Monona Spartans. The boys held them to no points the first half but they also didn t score. Towards the end of the third quarter the spartans scored a touchdown and then had a two point conversion. Our boys fought hard all of the fourth quarter but they couldn t catch up. The final score of the game was 0-8. Even though we lost Ram Fans are still proud of our boys! 4 Maple Valley Anthon Oto Charter Oak Ute Brylie Boettcher Emily Trucke This month a few selected Rams were chosen to participate in a quiz over Halloween. The candidates chosen were, freshmen Emily Trucke, sophomore Makenzie Smith, junior Haden Kuhl, senior Haylee Halbur, and staff member Mr. Scholl. The first question asked was, Where did Jack-olanterns originate from? The answer is Ireland. The first candidate to answer was Trucke, saying Did you come to me The RAM Write Up Makenzie Smith because I m dumb...i don t know...charlottesville? That is incorrect Trucke. The next candidates were Smith, Kuhl, and Halbur all answering with Canada? Not even close guys! Scholl was up next with the reply of I should know this...salem, Massachusetts? The next question for the contestants was, what happens when you see a black cat? All of the candidates answered correctly with, Haden Kuhl It s bad luck except for Smith who said, That s sketchy, get out of there! The third question asked was, what day is Halloween on? Trucke had the answer, October 31 duhhh. Correct Trucke. Smith was next with October 29? Sorry but that is incorrect Smith. Next up, Kuhl replied with, I don t even know... like October...I don t know the 7? Incorrect Kuhl. Halbur was next with the correct Breakthrough study shows sunlight can help with your symptoms Emmalee Scott By Matthias Süßen, CC BY-SA 2.5, commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid= creased sun exposure. Avoid winter anxiety and SAD by spending more time in the sun. Go on a winter walk. Grab some friends and go sledding. Start a snowball fight. Make sure you get yourself outside. But don t forget the sunscreen! If you have tried spending more time in the sun but still suffer from extreme anxiety, be sure to make an appointment with your doctor. If you would like more information visit: or www. webmd.com Haylee Halbur Mr. Scholl answer, October 31. Mr. Scholl was also correct after he thought about it. The last question was what is the most popular candy sold in the U.S. during Halloween? Trucke, Smith, and Mr. Scholl all answered with candy corn? Kuhl answered with probably like Snickers. Candy corn and snickers are incorrect. Halbur replied with, hmm M&M S because I love them! Halbur you are correct and also the winner getting three out of four questions correct. Second place was a three way tie between Trucke, Smith, and Scholl, getting two of the four questions right. Last place was Kuhl getting one question right. A big thanks to everyone that participated in this months Ram Walking! THE INSIDER MINDFUL MINUTE Think about how you feel in the summer compared to the winter. How are your moods different? How are your emotions different? Evidence has shown that there is a connection between lack of sunlight and people having anxiety and even panic attacks. A connection has already been made between sunlight and depression. There are strageties that help to reduce anxiety, if those issues are related to lack of sun exposure. The relationship between anxiety and lack of sunlight is a bit more complicated than the connection with depression and lack of sunlight. Having low serotonin levels plays an important role in depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Serotonin, the neurotransmitter that helps to regulate things like sleep, moods, emotions and many other things drops when you have de- Page 4 As the head of the high school Mr. Dougherty has almost seen it all. Right off the bat we asked him what his favorite subject was in high school immediately answered with P.E. He liked it because it allowed him to be active. Mr. Dougherty hasn t always lived in Mapleton. He grew up in Dunlap. He started his career in Dow City, Iowa at Boyer Valley teaching Physical Education. It was surprising to learn that he didn t always want to be in education. He first started off his freshamn year in college with Radio Broadcasting. Emmalee Scott Dougherty had his own show on Sunday nights commentating the football or basketball games. Over the summer, he went home and coached a little league baseball team. That made him realize that he really missed it. Then he decided that he would switch from broadcasting to education and also become a coach. Mr. Dougherty has been an employee here at MVAOCOU for the past eighteen years. He believes that the biggest change that has happened in the school district while he has been here is the new high school. Other minor things have changed like courses, technology, and, of course, the staff. The best thing about our school and community, according to Mr. Dougherty, is the people. We asked him to envision the perfect student. What personality traits would he/she possess? Mr. Dougherty does not believe being a perfect student is even possible. He believes that the person that accepts that they are not perfect would be a good start. As long as they work to improve themselves and accept that sometimes they will fail but just have to try harder next time. The best advice that he has ever recieved is Before you make a big decision, stop, breathe, think about it, and walk around the building before you make a snap decision. Maybe that s why we see him walking around so much! He calls it management while walking around.

The girls cross country team consists of JoHannah McKibben, Jordyn Pester, Linzey Goedekke, Aubree Palmer, Cameron Brenner, Lexi Weber, Maria Swanson, Lindsey Sisco and Zoe Jessen. The boys team consists of Dylan Blake, Weston Beeson, Camric Hamann and Jackson Krusen. The team works hard in practice everyday; running different drills at practice including 45 s, pack runs, hills, and the horse trail. This helps them shave seconds off their time at a meet. Team member Cameron Brenner believes that for such a little team we are able to compete and beat the big teams. Brenner continues There are good individual placings among the team. Pester, McKibben, Palmer, Brenner, Blake and Beeson have all individually placed at meets. Coach Berkenpas has high expectations for his runners. He says With hard work we may have some individuals qualify for the state meet. He s also hoping they win another conference title. FULL SWING Preparing for the Volleyball Season Brenna Lansink practices her swing. Brylie Boettcher The MVAOCOU volleyball team held a USD camp at the high school gym during the first week of August. Head coach Leanne Williamson brought three USD volleyball players along with her assistant coach, Michael Runde. The players were Brittany Jessen, Meagan Kerns and Rachel Schmidt. The USD camp helped prepare the team to play their best this season against tough competition from Ridge View and Westwood. Senior Haylee Halbur is optimistic stating, With only three returning starters, our team has big spots to fill. I think that our girls will do a good job filling them. The USD players and coaches taught the MVAOCOU team a variety of drills to work on all aspects of the game. They also taught warm up drills for the beginning of practice and before games which Coach Hermsen has incorporated into practice. The USD camp positively impacted the players by helping them become smarter and quicker on their feet.
6 Maple Valley Anthon Oto Charter Oak Ute The RAM Write Up Page 6 Photo Taken by Heidi Henderson GUEST WRITER Jenny Frank Makayla Henderson, a senior here at MVAOC- OU, is the middle child of five. She has a really good relationship with her older sister, Alex who graduated a couple years ago from COU. When asked about her siblings, she said that her little sister is kind of vicious, her older brother David is not nice, and she has a good relationship with her oldest brother Dallas because he likes to spend time with her. She thinks of her closest friend here as Brenna Lansink, a fellow senior. As for the merging of MVAO and COU, she thinks of this school to be kind of like a maze. Makayla s favorite memory is when she took a six day fishing trip with her uncle because she caught about twenty fish and he only caught six. Senioritis set in as soon as her Junior year ended, when she got a text from her sister. She didn t ever attend any school activities, but her favorite thing to do is ride her horses bareback across a creek near her house. Speaking of animals, she has five pets, two horses and three dogs. Although Makayla doesn t know what college she wants to go to, she wants to be a veterinary assistant. A piece of advice Makayla has for underclassmen is to work hard, get your stuff done, and show up on time. Good Luck Makayla! Haylee Ann Halbur was born on April 6, 2000 to parents Stacie and Steve Halbur. She joined siblings Samantha Halbur and Brittany Hermsen. Halbur has been active all four years of high school in a variety of activities including volleyball, basketball, golf, softball, student council, gold club, and National Honor Society. Halburs most embarrising school memory was during her first day of volleyball practice as a freshman. The seniors on the team depantsed her in ront of everyone. Her favorite memory is making it to state softball her 8th grade year. It was a great experience that not everyone gets to have said Halbur. Another favorite memory is calling out an individual at a conference golf meet for cheating. Sadly, the person did not get disqualified. Although she did have to count strokes back. Halbur enjoys attending softball games where she plays and football games where she views from the stands. If Halbur could rewind and be a freshman again she would change a few things. She wishes Photo by Sky Marie Photography she was more of a leader than a follower. She would also show the teachers more respect. Halbur s advice to underclassman is to never give up, get your homework done, and stay on top of things. Halbur describes her high school career in three words, fun, dramatic, and entertaining. Halbur is currently undecided on a major and isn t sure which college she will attend. She is considering Iowa Western, USD, or Wayne State. Good luck on your new adventure Haylee! 7 Maple Valley Anthon Oto Charter Oak Ute The RAM Write Up Page 7 Brylie Boettcher Hayley Marie Knudsen was brought into this world on September 17, 1999 by Chris and Melissa Knudsen. Knudsen has been involved in volleyball, FFA, and Gold Club. Knudsen s favorite memories were made during the FFA summer trips. While on a fishing trip to the boundry waters in Minnesota, they had to carry their canoes across a port and Mr. Wimmer asked her to carry his tackle box. The tackle box had a treble hook stuck in it and one hook got stuck in her knee. Two guys that were with her had to help pull it out. Her favorite week of school is homecoming because, It s fun dressing up everyday and going to the football EDITOR IN CHIEF JOHANNAH MCKIBBEN Photo by Moonlight Designs Photography games. Knudsen thinks football and basketball were the most fun sporting events to attend. If Knudsen could be a freshman again she would not let little things stress her out. She wishes she would ve tried harder in math. Knudsen describes her high school career in three words, chaotic, fun, and interesting. Her advice to under classmen is, Do your work and turn it in on time. Be nice and friendly to everybody and enjoy high school because it goes by really fast. After graduation she plans on pursuing nursing in college. Currently her top college picks are USD or Central College. Good luck Hayley! ADVISOR MRS. DIRKSEN Colby Seuntjens Rob and Kristi Paulsen welcomed their son Zackary Gabriel Paulsen into the world on November 12, Paulsen has three siblings, his full brother Blake Paulsen (16), and half siblings Bailey Paulsen (22) and Colby Drey (27). Paulsen was born in Sioux City, Iowa and four years later moved to Colorado Springs. He spent his adolescent years there and the Paulsen family moved back at the start of Paulsen s 7th grade year. Throughout high school you will see Paulsen playing baseball and spending his free time in the weight room. He also spends a lot of time in the gym getting ready for the Iron Man Volleyball game which he looks forward to every year. Paulsen wishes he would have tried harder his freshmen year and would have done better in math. His Photo by Moonlight Designs Photography advice to underclassmen is, Don t stress out about school, have fun. Paulsen s favorite memory from his high school career is when the baseball team made it to sub state his freshmen year. After high school Paulsen plans to attend Iowa Western Community College. He wants to become a police officer. Good luck Paulsen! Seeing Both Sides A personal experience transferring schools. GUEST WRITER Jenny Frank Transferring to a new school is never easy. I don t think it will ever be for anyone. I am one of the three people that transferred from COU to MVAO a year before the whole grade sharing began. My family made the decision to move from Soldier to Castana, but I never wanted to change schools. I dreamed of graduating from COU like my sister and cousins before me. They all had the same high school experience, and I looked forward to sharing that with them. Open house was my first time in the Mapleton High School. I was so nervous and failed to open my locker. After a few tries, I started to cry. When the first day of school came around, I was really stressed because I did not have a schedule, my locker still wouldn t open, and I felt intimidated by the teachers. Throughout the first quarter, all I felt was fear, but that slowly went away in the second quarter and I was feeling happy once again. The hardest thing to remember was that when you want to talk to the secretary, you go to the window, you can t just walk into the office. Another difference is the ipads. I hated them with a passion because COU had Macs and it was hard to adjust. Just as I was beginning to feel at home, a new, unexpected fear began to overtake me. Rumor had it that we would be combining with COU. I was scared because I d created a new life for myself here and I was happy. Would everything change again? Overall, I m happy about the transfer. It was a change for the better because I m happy now and that s the best thing anyone could hope for. Thank you Jenny Frank for sharing your experience with readers. Each month the Ram Write-Up will feature a guest spot if you are a student or teacher that is interested in writing here please kdirksen@mvaoschool.org
