This year s track team sent a strong message to every class in the state: We are MVAO, and we are a team with which to be reckoned. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday were memorable for the Rams girls and boys track teams, bringing home three first place medals in two second place medals, and a team trophy as State Runner Up in 1A. The taste of victory was still fresh in the girls memories of last year s first place finish. They were determined to bring home a second victory in the distance medley but the girl s track team far surpassed that goal. The team of JoJo McKibben (starter) Karlee Wolf, Jordan Pester, and Morgan Todd (anchor) set a new school record with a time of 4:12.28 to bring home the first place repeat medal. Junior Jordyn Pester placed first in the 400 with a time of 56:97 which also set a new school record. 2 Page 2, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools Spring concert gives band and choir seniors a proper sendoff By Joseph Kovarna It s all lead to this. Every day of practice, every event, every embarrassing reed squeak and voice crack. Welcome to the 2016 MVAO Spring Awards Concert! Preparations for said concert began shortly after the winter concert. A short reprise followed the concert in mid-december, but very soon afterwards Mr. Kovarna and Mr. Smeltzer had the band and choir working again. For the choir it s not all that easy. When you have two groups who have pieces to practice and perform for a concert like this, it means taking time away from one group or the other. Mr. Smeltzer had the Concert Choir and Ram Singers split rehearsal time between them so the other won t fall behind to the point where they won t be ready. Usually this means one will take a day out of the week to work on their pieces and the other will take the next. For band, this is much easier. Having only one group that needs practice during the school day allows a greater amount of focus on what needs improvement. When Mr. Kovarna needs an outside opinion, he ll have clinics, and bring in band directors from other high schools and even from colleges to critique the band! For the last clinic of the year he brought in Dr. Michael Golemo, director of bands at Iowa State University. With all preparations out of the way, it s concert time! First up is the MVAO Tune Squad. Their first song was Just One Of Those Things by Cole Porter, and arranged by Jay Althouse. Their next tune was Detour Ahead, by Herb Ellis, John Frigo, and Lou Carter, and arranged by Paris Rutherford. Soloists for this song were Kylee McDermott and Skyler McDermott. The Tune Squad s final selection was I Wish, with words and music by Stevie Wonder and arranged by Roger Emerson. Next up is the Jazz Band, cool name pending. Their first song was Alright, Okay, You Win, with words and music by Sid Wyche and Mayme Watts, and arranged Sammy Nestico. Soloists on this piece were Dylan Mead on alto saxophone and NiKayla Aguirre on baritone saxophone. The jazz band s second and final piece was Humanism by Jonathan M. Batiste, and arranged by Paul Murtha. Soloists on this piece were Adam Plautz on bass trombone, NiKayla Aguirre on baritone saxophone, Ben Kovarna on trumpet, Dylan Mead on alto saxophone, and featured a trombone solo battle between Joseph Kovarna and Mr. Kovarna. The third ensemble to perform was the Concert Choir. Their first song was Let s Begin Again, with words by David Grant and music by John Rutter. The choir s second song was O Sifuni Mungu with words and music by Marty McCall, David Maddux, Mmunga Mwenebulongo, and Asukulu Yunu Mukalay, and arranged by David Maddux. Their final piece was He Never Failed Me Yet, by Robert Ray, a gospel song featuring the choir seniors. The next group to perform was the Concert Band. Their first song was As Summer Was Just Beginning, a tribute to James Dean written by Larry D. Daehn. Their second and final piece was Little Suite For Band, a three-movement song by Clare Grundman. The final ensemble to perform was the Ram Singers. Their first piece was A Festive Alleluia by Mary Lynn Lightfoot. The second piece was Set Me As a Seal by René Clausen. Their final selection was Jabula Jesu, a Zulu folk song arranged by Stephen Hatfield. Throughout the choral portions of the concert, awards for Outstanding Vocal Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Seniors (male, female, and overall) were presented. The recipients of these awards were determined by popular vote. The winners are those who the students believe have made the greatest contributions to the choir program this school year. The winners are as follows. Outstanding Freshman: Lindsey Sisco; Outstanding Sophomore: Adam Plautz; Outstanding Junior: Kyle Sexton; Outstanding Senior Male: Anavin Mounivong; Outstanding Senior Female: Kylee McDermott; Outstanding Senior Overall: Skyler McDermott. Band awards were handed out during the Concert Band s portion of the concert. Two awards, the John Philip Sousa Band Award and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, were presented to Joseph Kovarna and NiKayla Aguirre, respectively. The final award given that night was the Ram Musicianship Award. The recipient of this award is a senior, who must be in both band and choir, and is chosen by Mr. Kovarna and Mr. Smeltzer based upon their contribution and involvement in both programs. This year s recipient of the Ram Musicianship Award was Joseph Kovarna. Congrats also to Oustanding Freshman Lindsey Sisco, Outstanding Sophomore Adam Plautz, and Outstanding Junior Kyle Sexton. 3 Page 3, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools Baccalaureate service held for MVAO seniors By Brad Ortner O n We d n e s d a y M a y 1 7 Baccalaureate Service will be held in the MVAO High School Gym at 7 P.M. As a general overview Baccalaureate is a non-denominational religious service for graduating seniors and their parents to attend. The high school has no religious affiliation with the event but allows various church leaders to attend and use the gym for the ceremony. The service is not mandatory for seniors or parents to attend. Baccalaureate is a time for seniors to reflect on their accomplishments in high school and look forward to what they will accomplish in the future. Typically church leaders such as pastors, ministers, and priests will speak at the event. Other speakers can include faculty members and students. These speeches address the senior class and usually are reflective and may include bible verses or quotes that the speaker chooses. The history of Baccalaureate goes back to the tradition of students giving sermons at Oxford University in England during the 1400 s. These students were asked to give these speeches in Latin. That tradition later came to be introduced to American Universities and later to high schools. The name bacca comes from bachelor which relates to college graduates who have received their bachelor s degree. The word lauri is said to mean oration which is a formal speech given on a ceremonial occasion. Overall Baccalaureate is a good time for seniors to reflect on what they have done thus far in their life and what they will do in the near future. The service does not carry the attendance of commencement which can make it easier for older and other family members to attend if they cannot attend commencement. Congratulations, and good luck to the class of 2017 on everything your future holds! FFA holds annual awards banquet Brad Ortner (pictured) and Skyler McDermott gave speeches at the Baccalaureate service on May 17. Congtratulations Class of 2017! The junior and senior members brought a pan of potatoes, and freshman and sophomore members brought a dessert. Once everyone was done eating the awards were given out. 4 Page 4, The Ram Write-Up, Maple Valley Anthon- Oto Schools MVAO choir and band students leave for Denver By Danielle Yockey All of the MVAO band and choir kids boarded the bus early in the morning of April 27, 2017 to head to Denver, Colorado. The group consisted of band and choir members who wanted to attend as well as chaperones, two of which being the band and choir directors. There were stops about every hour or so. It took roughly 11 hours to get there. They checked into their hotel that night in Denver, CO. Many of the kids spent time before supper in their rooms settling in or playing in the pool. That night for supper was Pizza in the hotel. The next morning they loaded their bus at eight. They then headed for the University of Denver. The first event was a Choir Clinic with Dr. Catherine Sailer at the University of Denver s School of Music at 9:30. After the Choir Clinic the group attended the Band Clinic with Dr. Joseph Martin. For lunch they stayed on the campus and ate in Nelson Dining Hall. The next stop was the Red Rocks Park as well as the Amphitheatre Tour. The first part was at the Ampitheatre. After they were given time to look around at the gift shop their tour began. They learned many things like the history of the place and many cool stories about the founding of it as well as the many people who have performed there. Artist singers have been performing here for 75 years. Some examples are performers like Willie Nelson, The Beatles, Kenny Chesney, STYX, Maroon 5, and Chicago. The seats are wood made into the side of the rock. Down under is where the dressing rooms are as well as a room filled with autographs. The group got the chance to go into a dressing room. They also got to go into the space with the autographs and look for people they knew. They found people like Brantley Gilbert and they saw STYX on the wall. After the group finished the tour they went up onto the stage. They sang songs on the same stage that so many famous people had before them. They also go their picture taken on the stage. Then it was on to Casa Bonita. There are cliff divers who perform while you are eating. There is also an arcade in Casa Bonita where you can win prizes. Everyone got to go play games after enjoying their meal. The third day consisted of a trip to Pikes Peak as well as to the Garden of the Gods. The plan was to ride a train up to the top of Baseball is in full swing By Juan Delagarza The 2017 baseball season officially started on May 8. The Rams are going into this season looking for new faces to step up into the varsity rolls after losing some key components from last year s team. Although the team lost some players, they also have a majority of returners. The letter winners from last year are: Sophomores Ely Fundermann, Haden Kuhl, Zak Scott, Aaron Michael, and Cameron Boyle, Juniors Colby Seuntjens, Connor Beeck, Zack Paulsen, and Nathaniel Ramirez, Seniors Adam Ehlers and Brady Gothier. Head coach Dan Dougherty expects these players to step up and be the leaders of this year s team. The team will look to find their success coming from ace pitcher, Seuntjens, who was among the tops in the state in strike outs with 115. Gothier will look to have another strong year hitting the ball after leading the team in runs scored last season with 26. More help with the bats will come from Seuntjens, Scott, and Paulsen. The Western Valley Conference has not been easy the past couple of years and the trend looks to be the same this year. Dougherty says, Woodbury Central will be tough. OABCIG, Lawton-Bronson, and Ridge View are traditionally strong and will be battling for the top spot in the conference. We should be among the teams competing for a conference championship. Outside the conference, the Rams will continue to have their work cut out for them. They will be challenged by several other teams such as: Sioux City West, Missouri Valley, Akron- Westfield, and Hinton. Being an overall you team, the Rams will look for hard work and desire to carry them throughout the season. They want to be playing their best baseball at the end of the season and are very excited to see what this season brings for the team! Pictured right are the returning letter winners. (Top row): Zak Scott, Brady Gothier, Connor Beeck, and Colby Seuntjens (Bottom row): Zack Paulsen, Aaron Michael, Cameron Boyle, and Haden Kuhl Pike s Peak, but because of the weather; they were not able to go all the way to the top. They were able to get out on the way back down and walk around in the designated area or take pictures. The train even made a stop on the way to let off hikers. Then they got off of the train and went into the shop. Next they went to the Garden of the Gods. The first stop there was at the Visitor s Center. There was a huge gift shop in building as well as information you could look at. It taught about the land and the animals there. There was a video shown downstairs talking about the rocks. It talked about how they have changed over time and became the way that they are. Next was a tour but because of the weather again it was mostly in the bus. While they drove the tour guide pointed things out and talked about them. They also got to stop many times to look at the rocks and take pictures. Last they went to a dinner theatre. The show was about princesses who had had enough of the stereotypical lives in a fairy tale book. The actresses were even the waitresses at the theatre that night. On the last day they went to Elitch Birthdays Gardens Theme and Waterpark in Denver. The group was at the park for about 7 hours and then after spending the day there, they loaded up the bus and headed home. They got home early Monday morning. The group got to take part in many educational experiences as well as learning more about music and having fun while doing it. Pictured above the band and choir kids on the Denver Colorado trip.
