2 Maple Valley Anthon Oto Charter Oak Ute The RAM Write-Up Page 2 Continued: Human Trafficking Awareness is not far from our communities. Remember this can happen anywhere and to anyone so always make smart decisions and be aware of your surroundings. When people hear about human trafficking, they usually think of a naive teenage girl being taken and sold for sexual reasons. But it s more than just teenagers, the range of ages being trafficked goes from an infant to an elder. You re probably shocked right now. I can tell you that I was also when Sarah, the speaker, relayed this information to the crowd. She said, It s just as disgusting to sell an 80-yearold as it is a 20-year-old. They re both wrong. Every person has worth. That stuck with me. The whole message was to let you know that no matter who you are you still have worth and still matter. The assembly brought a huge awareness to many students and opened their eyes to how it is possible that it could happen to them. I didn t write this article to frighten others, I wrote it to spread the message that I received at the assembly. I hope you can take as much out of it as I did. This is a real-world issue with real-world scenarios. Always do the right thing (helping that person out at the mall or anywhere for that matter is the right thing to do, but only if it s safe), always be aware of your surroundings, make smart decisions, lastly and most importantly always remember your self-worth and that you matter! Students Shine BrightLike Diamonds at Prom Emmalee Scott Everyone survived the long night at prom! Prom was held on April 21 at the high school. Grand March started at 8, but at about 7:30 the bleachers started filling in from people around the communities. Friends, parents, siblings, grandparents, and many others filled the stands to see everyone. The junior emcees for the night were Haley Drenkhahn and Adam Plautz. The seniors had voted these two to announce all of the couples. All day Friday, about 20 or so of the juniors worked all day to decorate the gym. They spent a majority of the time on the white columns, making sure they had every slot cut out. All of the precision and hard work on those paid off because after they got the lights put in, they looked very cool. Immediately after Grand March started, the kids got to enjoy the dance in the commons. The dance lasted until 12 giving students a half an hour to change before heading to the elementary school to enjoy after prom. After prom had a lot of fun to offer the students, everyone had a great time! MOVIE REVIEW Brylie Boettcher Prom Photos by Moonlight Designs, thanks Sarah! Avery Ehlers The Miracle Season has brought box offices around $5 million since its opening day on April 6. The Miracle Season is based on a true story not too far away from here. The year is 2011, and all the Iowa City West girls volleyball team wants, is to bring home another state championship. The girls look to their senior setter and captain Caroline Found, to lead them back to the state tournament. The night after the first game Caroline gets into a tragic moped accident that takes her life. Will the team be able to bounce back without their setter or captain? This movie is rated PG so anyone can go and watch it. It s a movie that I highly recommend. It has sad parts but it also shows how people can recover from a loss. I d give this movie a 10/10! This year at after prom there were many things including: a blow up obstacle course, blow up basketball hoops, laser tag, musical bingo, a photo booth, and a ton of food. Musical bingo is just like regular bingo but the DJ would play a song and you would have to guess what the song was called on your card. For food there was, nachos or walking tacos, popcorn with your choice of candy to put in it, different types of cook- 02- Dawson Bolinger 02- Cayden Henderson 03- Emmalee Scott 05- Brooklyn Beery 08- Avery Ehlers ies, brownies, Little Debbies and just lots of candy. The drinks that were offered were water or pop. Throughout the night there were prizes given away. Some of the prizes given away were, speakers, headphones, gift cards, ram shirts, candy, water bottles, baskets full of goodies, George Formans, hats, sunglasses, tool boxes, tackle boxes and fishing polls, bean bags, and many other things. 3 Maple Valley Anthon Oto Charter Oak Ute The RAM Write-Up Page 3 HEAP OF THE MONTH The Insider: Mrs. Sass Shelby Davis Cameron Brenner If you ve seen a white 2001 Pontiac Bonneville, it would happen to be Shelby Davis strolling around. Her mom had this car for four years and then Davis got it the fifth year of having it in the Davis family. She claimed the car the summer before her freshman year. She refers to her car as Arlene. A fun fact is Mr. Dose (an elementary teacher at MVAO- COU) had the car before the Davis family. Arlene has been hit in the parking lot during a volleyball game, but she has never hit anyone yet. A horrible memory Davis has with Arlene is she left her car running during softball practice. It was very upsetting to her because she needed EDITOR IN CHIEF JoHannah McKibben to get to the school. The whole softball team recalls her waling in her car and found it humorous. Another horrible memory was when she left with Arlene from a football game and a cop pulled her over for having her lights on in town. It all ended up being okay because she only got a warning. Davis swore to her parents that she would keep the car spotless, but overtime Arlene has turned into a pile. Davis loves Arlene even if she isn t the nicest looking car in town. She cannot wait to create more memories and have more experiences with Arlene. Hopefully, she has some better ones in the near future!! ADVISOR Mrs. Dirksen If you hear blunt and honest advice along with constant laughing floating out of room 47, you probably have stumbled upon Mrs. Sass classroom. Angie Sass was born on June 30, 1989 to parents Mike and Tammy Flanigan. Sass is the only girl in this family of six; she has one older brother, Alex, and two younger brothers Joey and Shawn. Sass graduated with the MVAO class of While in high school she enjoyed hanging out with friends and participating in extracurricular activities. Her favorite of these activities was golf. While in high school she was a part of the 2006 state golf team. She enjoyed golf because she ASK EVA got to know the competitors she had played in other sports a little better. After she graduated Sass attended the University of Northern Iowa where she doubled majored in business education and real estate. Sass also got her Masters degree in business administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. While enrolled at UNI she met her husband and best friend Andy. Andy and Sass were married on April 18, The Sass have two kids, one boy and one girl, John and Elsie. She loves to hang out and take pictures of her little ones to share with family and friends. Sass aspires to raise her kids to be kind, smart and considerate human beings. Sass admits that Eva Dear Eva, I have a friend who has a crush on me and wants to be more than friends. I don t have those same feelings for them. How do I tell them that without hurting our friendship? Dear Reader, You need to be straight up with them and tell them that you just want to be friends. They will probably be hurt at first so you should her favorite class to teach is Personal Finance because you will use this class in the real world. She would also admit that her favorite part of teaching is taking BPA students to Des Moines every year so they can experience something other than small town life. Sass is very excited to take the Parliamentary Procedure group to Dallas because it will be the first time she is going to a national convention. If you are around her a lot you might hear Sass say If it s not gonna matter in five years then don t worry for more than five minutes. She says this is her advice to everyone because it s true and applies to everyday situations. Thanks for all your teaching Mrs. Sass! give them some space. Make sure that you aren t leading them on because that will give them the wrong impression of what you want. If they keep pushing to be in a relationship even after you said you didn t want one then you need to tell them no and take a break from the friendship.

Throughout high school Wensel has been involved in band, school play, football, and FFA. Wensel enjoys playing guitar and working on his car. A lot of her favorite memories come from either cheerleading or cross country experiences. One of her favorite memories in cross-country occurred at an Ida Grove meet. Her teammate, Jo McKibben, was looking for her Dad. She thought she had spotted Emmalee Scott Tyler Lourence Gunlogson was born on September 4, He was welcomed by parents Kevin and Joan Gunlogson. Each year, Gunlogson looked forward him so she yelled, Hey, Father Matt!!! The man turned around and he ended up not being Jo s Father Matt. The whole team got a kick out of it (especially Palmer). As a cross-country team, Palmer will always remember the team being close. She was extremely close to the Coach of the team, Alden (Berk or Berkie). Every single teammate has a special spot in their heart for Berk and for, of course, his banana cake/bread. Palmer has accomplished some outstanding things. Such as her junior year making it to state cross-country and track. She remembers both being extremely fun and a great experience. Many students at Maple Valley who know of Palmer may think she has always gone here. But to football, because it was a fun experience. The biggest difference between this year and last year for him is he is older and has different classes. He wishes that he would ve tried harder in math because it made his GPA go down. If he could be a freshman again he would try to not fail algebra. she actually attended her freshman year at West High School. From then on she has been a Ram along with her siblings. Palmer doesn t necessarily have a favorite class, but as for the teachers she enjoys Mrs. Sass classes and Mr. Casey Brown s mentor group. Her favorite thing about the mentor group is the interesting chats that they have. As for advice to underclassmen, Palmer suggests staying completely focused on school. Also, to always try your hardest because you ll thank yourself in the end. After high school, Palmer plans to complete a two-year college of Gen Eds. After that, she plans to move getting an Animal Science Degree with focus on Pre-Vet. We wish you the best of luck, Aubree! His advice to underclassmen would be to do your homework on time. Senioritis set in the second semester this year. His favorite memory is getting 4th at state quizbowl. Next year he will be pursuing diesel mechanics at Peterbilt. We wish you the best of luck!

6 Maple Valley Anthon Oto Charter Oak Ute The RAM Write-Up Page 6 RUNNING LIKE THE WIND The MVAOCOU runners take on the Conference Meet Sophie Krusen sets up her blocks for her open 400. EDITOR AND CHIEF JoHannah McKibben The force of the strong winds at this year's Conference Meet did not benefit a high number of runners. Some of the participants of the meet were being blown around the track as they did their warm ups and cool downs. The strong winds were directly on the home stretch or also Cameron O Connell warms up by doing a build up. known as the finish of the race. This affected times for all the runners, but did not stop the Rams, as there was a handful of Conference Titles. First team All Conference consisted of the boys 4x8, girls sprint medley, girls 4x4, and Dylan Blake and Jordyn Pester in several open events. The boys 4x8 team consisted of Blake, Cameron O Connell, Kolby Nutt, and Haden Kuhl. The two relays for the girls included, Cameron Brenner, Brenna Lansink, JoHannah McKibben, and Pester. Second Team All Conference consisted of Lansink and Katelynn Mullin. Mullin Kolby Nutt comes out of blocks for the 4x2 Relay. placed second in both shot put and discus and Lansink placed second in the 100 hurdles. The wind was an adversity to the runners but the Rams were able to overcome. Many members of the track team did not set a personal record that night but the coaches understood with the con- ditions and wanted the runners to place in their events to get points. Both girls and boys placed third overall at the Conference Meet. The track team now will buckle down and focus as the District Meet is fast approaching. STUDENT POLLS:Let s go ride a bike! Shelby Davis May 18th is National Ride Your Bike Day but for seniors Ben Sadler and Colby Seuntjens everyday is National Ride Your Bike Day. Sadler and Seuntjens recently started riding their bike to school when the weather got nice enough to do so. In honor of their dedication to a greener planet the Ram Write-Up staff sent out a poll to ask other students about their biking habits. The large majority of students own a bike, but rarely use it. Riding a bike is a great way to exercise and spend time outdoors, so get those tires filled with air and make time to ride!
