1 The President s Message Dear AAUW Camarillo Members, My thanks to those of you who came to the April meeting, made a quorum, and voted for the new slate of AAUW Directors. We will now be able to officiate for another year. Isn t Janet Garufis an interesting lady? Her talk was right on target for Equal Pay Month. I also was very pleased with the information shared by Barbara Calvi about equal pay. The cake with a quarter removed was a very pointed illustration of what women are still missing. All those unearned dollars in pay result in lower Social Security payments, too. This is also the month in which you are urged to participate in the elections of AAUW California and AAUW National. They keep track of who participates and report it to everyone! We have done quite well relatively in our participation levels in the past let s keep up the good work. You can vote in these elections via internet or mail. Internet is easiest: you should have received s from AAUW with a connection link that includes your membership number and a password. Just click a few times, and you will be done! Do it twice: National and California are separate elections. If you have misplaced your instruction , you can directly call the AAUW central office, and they will assist you. Look on the back of your AAUW magazine for the phone number and your membership number. If you are not internet-connected, you can still vote by mail. If you have not registered your with AAUW, you will have been sent a postcard with voting instructions. Still coming up is our fundraiser trip to the Symphony. It s not too late to participate in this, so see inside right away. Of course, it s never too late to make a donation in lieu of participation! I am pleased to report that we have resolved our WIH costume storage dilemma by renting a new, smaller space at Safe Storage. This is an extra on-going cost, but it preserves important assets. Our final general meeting of the year will be Saturday, May 30 th. Your new president, Pamela Perkins-Dwyer, and her team of officers will be installed at that time. See inside for more information. The final Executive Committee meeting of the year will be Monday, May 18 th at the home of Sara Stern. I'm looking forward to seeing all the Directors there. Branch members are also welcome to attend. Vanessa Otto Outgoing President

8 SAVING INNOCENCE Our Branch Executive Board has voted to support a project called Saving Innocence. Saving Innocence works to prevent, rescue and restore young victims of commercial sex trafficking. Our contribution will be in providing Freedom Bags which Saving Innocence takes to teenagers in the Los Angeles area when they are arrested for prostitution. The bags contain clothing and supplies to help transition these girls to a new life. The bags are based on a backpack, and they contain clothing, personal care items, a towel, a blanket and a toy. Next fall we will have a workshop to assemble a number of these Freedom Bags. Meantime, you can be accumulating some of the needed items. Many come from the Dollar store. The backpack and clothing are the most expensive components, but they don t have to be new, just nice. So keep your eyes open for good deals! Here are the Freedom Bag contents: Sports bra Underwear Lounge top/pants Socks Brush or comb Flip flops Toothpaste &Toothbrush Towel and Washcloth Shampoo & Conditioner Soap or Gel Lotion Deodorant Tissue pack Feminine hygiene products Chapstick Laundry soap Journal and pen Fleece blanket Stuffed animal $10 $30 gift card for different food options Personal note of encouragement
