4 Get ready to turn the pages and let s get STARTED Your first rumble takes place on county level. For this, you will read two books, one for discussion, and the other for presentation. Impress the judge with your understanding of the books in order to progress to the next level the national round. At the national round, you and your team will come face to face with teams from across Wales. They want the same as you to win the title and be crowned BookSlam Champions. Schools are allowed to use the same dramatic presentation in the national round as the one they prepared for the county round.
5 Rules of engagement Discussion round Each team to choose one book from the reading list Maximum 4 members in a team 10 minutes informal discussion time with the competition judge Each member to contribute to the discussion, demonstrating an understanding and appreciation of the chosen book Team work is important, from taking turns in contributing and listening to each other, to agreeing or disagreeing (politely!) The team is not expected to be prepared but should respond to questions and comments from the judge. ow to impress the judge? Display a thorough knowledge of the chosen book Show an ability to express opinions clearly Discuss as a group by agreeing or disagreeing with views presented Show your ability to get inside the book its plot, themes and characters Show enjoyment of the book and reading in general Show reasoning through honest and fair expression of opinions Ensure an equal contribution by all four members of the team.
6 Presentation Each team is to choose one book from the reading list (which has to be different to the one chosen for the discussion) Maximum 8 members in a team 8 minutes presentation (note: 1 mark will be deducted for each 30 seconds over the allotted 8 minutes) The presentation should appeal to an audience of children of all ages, and make them want to read the book The children taking part in the presentation need not be the same as the pupils who took part in the discussion (therefore, up to 12 pupils can take part in the competition) Performances should start and finish with an empty stage Pre-recorded music can be used but live musical accompaniment by teachers on the stage is not allowed. The judge may wish to see a copy of the script. ow to impress the judge? Give a lively presentation with various dramatic effects that captures the mood of the book and encourages young members of the audience to read the book Show a confident and effective use of the stage Display the ability to project using loud, clear and confident voices Include effective movements using all the performance space Show your ability to work as a team The use of costumes and props is effective but are not mandatory. Marks: 50% awarded for the discussion and 50% awarded for the presentation Need help?
