MIAA Community Service Award Finalists Team Category Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School Cross Country and Track For the past several years, the girl s teams have been actively involved with many different types of community service projects. The girls volunteer at the annual Cranberry Harvest Festival Road Race in the fall, Hyannis Marathon/10K Road Race in the winter and the Johnny Kelley Road Race in the spring. Responsibilities include t shirt pick up, water stops, handing out medals and recording runners at the finish line, and directing traffic. The Dennis Yarmouth athletes have also volunteered for Special Olympics, helped in elementary schools reading to second grade classes and served as CCD teachers in their churches and Student Council and Peer Leaders in their school. East Boston High School Boys Ice Hockey The Jets Hockey team has sponsored an annual Cancer Hockey Tournament for the past 14 years and has donated over $30,000 to the Boston Medical Cancer Center. Within the past year, East Boston had a sudden death in their school from cancer. The team immediately began fundraising in the student s name and decided the $3000 raised would be used for a scholarship to be awarded to a student athlete who demonstrates the values of sportsmanship. The Jets also raised and donated over $5,000 for a local six year old girl who passed away from cancer. Franklin High School Girls Ice Hockey Team Every spring, at the conclusion of their season, the Girls Ice Hockey Team helps to decorate downtown Franklin. They work alongside the Franklin Downtown Partnership, planting flowers in the spring and preparing the town common for the winter holidays. Prior to the start of their season, the team performs yard work for a local deployed soldier. They rake leaves, and participate in general yard clean up tasks while getting to bond off the ice. The team also participates in the Elisha Project, commuting to Rhode Island to help prepare two hundred and

fifty bagged lunches. They decorate the bags, load them into vans and hand them out to the homeless. Soup kitchens don t serve food on the weekends, so the girls feel like this is a great opportunity to help those who are less fortunate. Hoosac Valley High School Football Team The Hoosac Valley Football team was very active in their community. The team volunteered to help rebuild a playground that had been shut down. During the winter storms, fire hydrants were completely covered, so the team cleared out all of the fire hydrants with the help from the Hoosac basketball team. They also served chowder at a chowder contest for a non profit community event. Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School Boys Hockey Team The boy s hockey team served dinner to over 800 disabled and special athletes at the National Disabled Hockey Festival. They also volunteered at the Milley Memorial, installing plants, gravel pathways and mulch on a large hillside Memorial site to a fallen Afghanistan veteran and former team captain. In fall 2014, the boys assisted at special practices led by the high school coaches for local middle school teams, volunteered as parking directors at Temple High Holiday Services, organized a school dance as a fundraiser for Rosie s Place Shelter, and helped out at hockey practices run for kindergarten through fifth grade students. They also ran fundraisers for the JV team, which was cut from the school budget. During their hockey season, the boys prepared, served, and cleared a meal for residents of Rosie s Place Shelter in Boston. They also have a game called Warriors 4 Warriors, in which they raised over $10,000 for the LT. Scott F Milley Ranger Foundation. In addition, they attended the dedication ceremony for the John Toland Memorial Rink, to honor a local coach who passed away and cheered on the Mite team, who were playing during part of the dedication ceremony. Longmeadow High School Girls Field Hockey Team The Longmeadow field hockey team was nominated to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. They accepted and made a donation to the cause. The team participated in the Out of the Darkness Walk in Springfield, to bring awareness and show support to those who have lost loved ones to suicide. The girls also held multiple clinics for the youth field hockey programs in their community, to help build a bond between the youth and increase their skills, while having fun. The field hockey team dedicates the month of October from their season to breast cancer awareness. They sell Play4theCure bracelets and lanyards to help raise money for

the fundraiser. The team also honored a field hockey referee from Western Massachusetts who had lost a loved one to cancer. Melrose High School Cross Country Team For the past 20 years, the Melrose Cross Country team has participated in a program called miles for meals. During one of their last practices of the season they ask people to sponsor them for the number of miles they run. To date, they have raised over $20,000. With these funds, they have supported an international child for five years, donated to The Bridge Home (a foster home), Globe Santa, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Melrose Emergency Fund, and numerous other charitable organizations. Monson High School Boy s Basketball Team The boy s basketball team travelled to the Massachusetts Adubon s Laughing Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Hampden, where they picked up trash, removed plants and did an overall cleanup of the park. The team also went to Brookings Elementary School for a read aloud and classroom book buddies program. The boys were split up into different classrooms to read books to the whole class and paired up with students to help them with other schoolwork and play games. Needham High School Girls Soccer Team For the last two seasons, the soccer program has dedicated their season to raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness. In 2013, the team raised and donated $29,420 and in 2014 they raised $38,000. The team found sponsors willing to donate for each goal scored and each shutout recorded for the Rockets. The girls secured over 600 sponsors during the season. They have been the top High School Fundraising team in Massachusetts for the past two years. North Attleboro Boys and Girls Cross Country Team The boys and girls cross country teams routinely volunteer for the Ronald McDonald House of Providence 5K and kids races. The teams have acted as members of the course set up and clean up crews and route supervisors. They were also solely responsible for the organization of the kids races. Responsibilities include the set up and clean up of the race, distributing water and

prizes, as well as being running ambassadors, giving pep talks to kids and encouraging them along the route. Northampton High School Boys Baseball Team The players from the Northampton baseball team volunteered to give up their February vacation to run an indoor clinic and camp at a local indoor arena. Over the course of the week the players worked with over 60 boys and girls coaching, teaching, and helping them become better athletes. Norton High School & Middleboro High School The two teams decided to collect new toys for those who would not be home for the holidays due to health issues. Both teams put boxes in their schools and asked students to bring in new toys. They advertised around school and town promoting everyone to participate. The two teams filled a bus with toys and delivered them to Boston Children s Hospital, where the toys were unloaded and wrapped, so the parents could give the toys to their children. Sharon High School Girls Basketball Team Working in conjunction with the Sharon Recreation Department, the girls created the first ever Sharon girls fall youth basketball clinic. For 8 weeks, the girls ran 4 hour clinics every Sunday for girls in third through eighth grade. Before the youth season began, the girls decided to run a clinic for the entire team of youth coaches to teach them drills that they could apply to their practices. Throughout their season, they invited the youth girls in seventh and eighth grade to attend practices and work with them on drills. The girls were also asked to be ball girls during the games, which allowed them to feel like part of the program. The team also volunteered their time at the basketball instructional clinic for all players from kindergarten to second grade and taught the players the basics of the sport. Lastly they hosted a Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser, selling bracelets and cards of hope, raising $445 for the American Cancer Society. Silver Lake Regional Boys Hockey Team The hockey team volunteered their time with the Kingston Fire Department and their annual Luminaries display. The team filled nearly 2,500 white paper bags with sand, placed a candle

inside, and placed them on flatbed trucks to be delivered to the center of town. Once the bags were delivered, the team placed them in ten yard increments throughout Kingston. There were bags lining both sides of the road for almost three miles. The fire department usually has 6 volunteers, but with help from the team this year, they had over 26 volunteers. Not surprisingly, they have been asked to come back to help in future years. Southwick Tolland Regional Girls Cross Country The team volunteered at the Western Mass Distance Project s XC Festival helping mark the course, direct runners, assist with registration, and staying on the course to cheer on every runner. For the senior meet, the girls asked for the names of the opposing teams seniors and made individual posters for every senior, both on their team and on the opposing team. The girls also made sure to say encouraging words to all of the seniors. Since the meet was right before Halloween, the girls all carved pumpkins to decorate the course and invited the other team to join them for dinner, to celebrate everyone s accomplishments. Having only one girl qualify for the state meet, all the girls decided to join her for the practices leading up to the meet, so she wouldn t train alone. The team also showed up the morning of the meet to travel with her and cheer her on. Sturgis Charter School West Boys Basketball Team The team held a Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser to raise money for the charity. The event was held on the night of a huge rivalry game to ensure a large crowd. They held a bake sale the day of the event and collected donations before and during the game. The boys also manned a 50/50 raffle table. Due to their efforts, they raised more than twice as much as most schools for this event. Tantasqua Regional High School Football Team The Tantasqua football team sold Warrior Cards to raise money for their booster club, served food at the Sturbridge Senior Center, cleaned the grounds of the Holland and Brimfield Senior Centers, did ground work at Sturbridge Town Hall, and held joint practices with local youth football teams. The team helped the youth with practices, conditioning, and drills to help them with their skills.

Taunton High School Girls Soccer The Taunton girls soccer team joined forces with their school to send the soccer team at Ridgewood High School in Florida proper equipment. Ridgewood High is a Title 1 school, where playing sports for many students is the difference between graduating and dropping out. The girls donated cleats, shin guards, socks, shorts, tops, sport bras, and compression shorts. Realizing the team was co ed, they began to get all different sizes and gear for both sexes. They also donated collapsible cones, goalie gear, and equipment bags. The girls felt truly happy knowing the athletes would now be properly equipped for their games. Westfield High School Boys and Girls Soccer Team The teams helped run fall and spring six week minicamps for young local athletes. The students received NSCAA coaching training and learned how to work with and coach the camp attendees. The teams also embarked on a community service project with the Westfield Recreation Pee Wee Soccer teams. On Saturday mornings, the athletes coached youth athletes for one hour before the game began. This allowed the athletes to help build the youth s skill and love for the sport, while giving them positive role models. Lastly, the soccer teams volunteered their time to work with Jay Heaps, the head coach of the New England Revolution at a Youth soccer day. The players assisted coach Heaps in demonstrating and working with the youth players on skills and drills for players of all levels. This day allowed the players to help build the future of soccer.
