Campus is bracing itself for the tsunami of new and returning students in Week 1, but your MDS committee has already been hard at work - we just can t wait to see the familiar faces and meet all the new ones! Our timetable is out, all classes are FREE in Week 1, Dance Camp is coming up fast, and we re throwing a party (FREE for members) to welcome everyone to the new year (and just cause). We will teach you everything you need to know to get out there, have fun, get fit and learn your left foot from your right! Read on to find out about all the things we have going on this year! WELCOME BACK MDS. BRING ON 2013 Beth Sheahan

For all those who don t know the name of a particular style of dance, or those who ve forgotten the name of a step they ve been doing for years, we ve compiled an A-Z of MDS to sort the Jive from Jazz and the Viennese Waltz from the Waltz Oxford. Warning: bad puns and dodgy rhyming ahead. A. is for Advancing, something the gentlemen do a lot, B. is for Bethany who s got the top spot, C. is for Casuals, if you don t want to join a class for the semester, D. is for Dance parties, no longer called socials, remember, E. is for Enthusiasm, which makes dancing fun, F. is for Friendly, we re a society of chums, G. is for Graceful, which you will look while gliding around the floor, H. is for Heels, ladies, if they re too high they ll make your feet sore, I. is for Intervarsity, a dance comp against Melbourne Uni, J. is for Jive, that s very fast-moving, K. is for Kicking up your heels, relevant in particular to the Charleston dance, L. is for Latin, where the girls will swing their hips provocatively if given the chance, M. is for Moses who supposes erroneously, N. is for New Yorkers, danced in Latin styles such as Cha-Cha and Rumba simultaneously, O. is for (Waltz) Oxford, where you re taught to walk anew, P. is for Paso Doblé, imagine a Matador being run through, Q. is for Quickstep, going mighty fast there, gov, R. is for Rumba, the romantic dance of love, S. is for Salsa, involving a lot of moving and shaking, T. is for Toes, which, if trodden upon, shall be aching, U. is for U-turning, useful for getting out of the way, V. is for Venetian Schottische, a lot easier to dance than to say, W. is for Waltzes, which involve a lot of turning, X. marks the spot on the floor where you begin and end your learning, Y. is for Yvonne, a dance taught in the New Vogue style, Z. is for pizzazz use your dance steps to beguile.

Last year s Titanic-themed Dinner Dance avoided all icebergs to be a marvellously successful night for medallists, dancers, teachers and guests alike. Many fabulouslydressed passengers set sail to Leonda by the Yarra, where many medals were handed out and many dancing achievements were celebrated. As usual, this was a joint MDS [Monash]-MUDC [Melbourne University] event, which encourages the dancing community at and between both universities. There was much merriment and changing of partners throughout the night, particularly during the progressive dances! Thanks and congratulations are due to the 2012 MDS Committee for organising such a wonderful event and we eagerly look forward to seeing what MUDC organises for Katie Vandeloo

Hint: If you look at the introduction to the committee page, you might be able to figure out some of these quotes owners. 8 On Sunday the 2nd of December 2012, the final of the World DanceSport Championship Standard was held in Melbourne. Couples were there representing more than 40 countries, competing and forming international friendships, watched by Melbourne and the world. For the dancers, this event was the end of four days worth of competition, but it also ended years of preparation and hard work that they d been putting in to get there. Proving that ballroom dancing may be viewed as old-fashioned but is still relevant in the modern world, were several musical surprises such as the Slow Foxtrot to Nirvana s Smells Like Teen Spirit, the Quickstep to Oasis Wonderwall and the Excelsior Schottische to Radiohead s Creep. Showcasing the versatility of dancing, there was also a Latin segment to the competition, a juniors competition and a New Vogue competition staggered throughout the night. These rounds were used as breaks for the Ballroom dancers and variety for the audience, who were shown many facets of dancing and the culmination of the competitors hard work and determination. Not only were the audience spectators, but during the break they were invited down to the dance floor for some social dancing, including a New Vogue dance, the Gypsy Tap, to YMCA. This showed the incredible community and camaraderie that may be formed between dancers and the social nature of dancing itself. This event may also be seen as an incentive, not just for the competitors in the Juniors section, but to any and all dancers as the ultimate competition, representing their country. The champions were Germany s Benedetto Ferruggia and Claudia Köhler, with Australia s Antonio Micheli and Ekaterina Maksimova placing 19th and Michael Glikman and Milana Deitch placing 45-47th. Katie Vandeloo

Swing, Salsa, Ballet, Hip-hop: these dance styles are so well known that everyone can picture what they look like, can imagine the kind of music they re danced to, and people probably have a pretty good idea of whether they d like to give them a go or not. Below are descriptions of a couple of dance styles that you may not have given as much thought to, or may not have even heard of. If you want to give any of these a go, don t forget that we have free classes all through Week 1 of semester and you can try out as many styles as you like! BALLROOM Ballroom dancing is also called Modern or Standard and is comprised of the following styles: Bronze: Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and Quickstep, Silver: Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot and Quickstep, Gold: Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep and Viennese Waltz These individual dances are danced commonly worldwide. There are often ballroom dancing competitions, where the ladies are dressed in long, flowing ball-gowns and the gentlemen are dressed smartly. Ballroom is a particularly popular style of dancing that teaches some worthwhile dance lessons, such as balance, poise, waltzing (common to more than just Ballroom!) and if you re not careful, you may just find yourself learning to walk again! Katie Vandeloo MODERN JIVE Modern Jive, also commonly known as ceroc and le-bop, is a relatively new style of dance that shares moves with both swing and rock-and-roll. Despite the similarity of their names, don t confuse this style with Latin Jive. Modern jive doesn t incorporate the triple step (or chasse). It s a great style to learn as it can be danced socially and is usually danced to popular modern music. Once you develop more of a mastery, you can also make it look amazing with lots of dips and lifts, which are always sure to impress! Megan Wallace NEW VOGUE New Vogue is an Australian style of dancing, modelled on Ballroom dancing, but with slightly shorter, sequence dances where a certain number of steps are learnt and repeated. The following dances appear in the syllabus: Bronze: Waltz Oxford, Parma Waltz, Merrilyn and Evening Three Step, Silver: Yvonne, Irene, Pride of Erin, Tangoette and Canadian Three Step, Gold: Swing Waltz, Royal Empress Tango, Saunter Caprice, Venetian Schottische, Carousel and Gypsy Tap. Each of these dances is danced to a certain rhythm; for example, the Gypsy Tap, Evening Three Step and Canadian Three Step are all marches and the Pride of Erin and Swing Waltz (amongst others) are waltzes. These are not the only possible dances, there are many New Vogues dances (these are the ones on the MDS syllabus). Katie Vandeloo

Although, we love hearing from you guys and we are more than happy to answer any question you have for us about classes, teachers and other events, we often get dozens of s asking exactly the same questions, especially at the beginning of a new year. Hopefully this section will cover some of the main questions about the club for you Q. Do I need to bring a partner to class? A. No! Feel free to bring along a partner or friend the more the merrier but the classes are all designed so that you can come along and dance with everyone, which is a great way to make some new friends! In classes where there s more girls than guys (which is often the case), the partners will continue to rotate so that everyone gets a go. Q. What should I wear to class? A. This is difficult to answer as it depends a lot on the different styles of dance but generally just wear something that you re comfortable in. Don t wear thongs. Your teachers will let you know if there are any other requirements for the class. Don t stress too much in the first few weeks, you ll figure out what s most comfortable for you. Q. Can I try out a class without signing up for membership? A. During week 1, all classes are free regardless of whether you ve signed up for membership yet or not, but, from week 2 onwards, you have to be an MDS member to do a class, even just for one week. If you re not sure about signing up, you re more than welcome to come down and watch classes to see if they re for you. Q. Where s the rehearsal room? A. This is an age-old question that often can t even be answered by students who have been at Monash for years! Our hide-out is neatly tucked away in the Campus Centre basement. Go out to the back of the Campus Centre, look directly at the ANZ ATM, take one step to your right, go through the sliding doors, go down the stairs to your right and that s where we ll be. Either that or just follow the music. Q. Can I join a class halfway through a semester? A. Yes! You are very welcome to join a class at any point in the semester, just make sure you check whether it s worth signing up for the semester or whether it s cheaper to pay casually (i.e. pay each week) from that point. Q. I ve done some dance before, what class level would suit me? A. To get the best idea of your level compared to the class, come down and talk to our teachers. They don t bite, we feed them enough. As a rule of thumb beginner classes cover basic steps and routines, so if you ve done any similar styles try the Intermediate/Silver. If you have taken more than two medal tests, try our Advanced/Gold.

Q. Can I switch classes or can I buy a semester of a mix of classes? A. We don t sell semesters of mixed classes and we prefer that you don t switch classes. The reason being is that it is a massive admin mess, to work out who has paid for each class, how many people are in each class. Orientation weeks, the dance camp and all our socials are great ways to try out different styles Q. Do you have classes in the evenings or the holidays? A. Unfortunately not. Our classes run from week 1-12 inclusive (excluding university holidays). Q. I m interested in teaching x dance style, would you like another class? A. Unfortunately the club doesn t have the resources to host every style we want to. However, we would seriously consider running a class that has enough dedicated interested students. Q. Can I join committee? A. Ok you got me this isn t a frequently asked question, but it should be! Being on committee is great to satisfy your desire for dance and it looks nice n'shiny on a resume. It s amazing fun and you make heaps of new friends. Speak to any committee member to join or if you want to know more Dance camp Dance camp last year was definitely a weekend to remember. Having never gone before, I'd been quite unsure of what to expect. All I'd known was that it was going to be an extremely fun and dance-filled few days. The dancing began basically as soon as we arrived at camp on the Friday night. While some demonstrated much skill and technique, Emily and I showed off our moves by doing some crazy interpretive dance. After a long night of laughter and shaking our hips, going to the beach seemed like the ideal way to cool down. The boys figured that a midnight swim would be a great way to do this; the only problem being that they decided everyone else should join them. I was one of the lucky ones, receiving only a wet hug however others got dragged into the water, or in some cases, picked up and thrown in. Nevertheless, we all managed to struggle back to camp, cold but thoroughly amused. A selection of classes were held the next day for us to choose from. I thought I'd try some styles that I'd never done before and so it was decided after much consideration, Cha Cha, Urban Hip Hop, Swing and Argentine Tango was the way to go. Cha Cha and Swing were both fast paced and involved a lot of footwork. Despite this, we were all able to pick up the routine and danced confidently by the end of the session. Urban Hip Hop provided a refreshing break from all the partner work and allowed us to focus more on our individual movement. It was tough but our teacher helped us through with his amusing yet effective instructions. Argentine Tango, however, was completely different to anything that I'd ever done before. Like for most of the other beginners in the room, partnerfinding at the start of the dance was definitely a highlight. Instead of walking straight over to someone, we were instructed to stare at them from afar until intense eye contact was made for a sufficient period of time, before proceeding to tango. These classes had provided us with a greater understanding of the different styles of dance and gave everyone the opportunity to try something different. As the night approached, more and more green clothes, hats and leprechaun ears began appearing as the St Patrick's Day themed party drew closer. After a quick practice of an Irish dance routine in our cabins, we were ready to go. While some showed off what they'd learnt during the day, Moses impressed everyone with his amazing limbo skills. The night ended with everyone huddling together under countless blankets while watching Dirty Dancing. Dance camp was definitely a huge success last year. Not only were we able to learn so much more about dance but also spend a weekend away with an awesome group of people. This year, camp will be from the 22 nd to the 24 th of March at Don Bosco Camp and I look forward to seeing you there! Bilin Zhou, MDS Secretary
