1 Dear Aria Attendee, Welcome to ARIA! I m so excited that you ve chosen to dance with me this summer. I ve gathered some of the best dance educators for this event and we are all looking forward to working with you! Included in this experience, you ll be able to attend DancerPalooza s huge expo hall (Beat Street) and additional master classes (Crash Courses) in many styles of dance. Admission to Beat Street is Free and admission to Crash Course classes are already included with your Aria registration. Thank you for making the trip to San Diego for ARIA and DancerPalooza! 2 CHECK-IN & OPENING NIGHT PARTY You may check-in any time on Monday, July 23 rd from 5pm-10pm at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel which is located right next to the San Diego Convention Center. At check-in, you will receive your badge, updated schedule and a DancerPalooza swag bag. On Monday night from 8pm-10pm at the Hilton we will be holding an Opening Night Party! This is a great opportunity for you to meet all of the Aria dancers and DancerPalooza attendees from around the world. Due to space limitations, chaperones are only allowed for dancers under the age of 13. If you are unable to check-in Monday night, you can do so the next morning at the San Diego Convention Center. The Info Desk will be open 30 minutes prior to the first event. EVENT LOCATION The Aria workshop/rehearsal rooms and Info Desk will be located at Ballroom 31 & 32 (on level three of the San Diego Convention Center). The Info Desk will be the place to go for check-in (if you are unable to do so on Monday), Observer Pass purchases, schedule or event changes, etc. PLEASE NOTE: We will only be accepting cash on-site. CASTING AUDITION On Tuesday, July 24 th there will be a casting audition to place the dancers for various parts in the Aria Finale on Sunday, July 29 th. All dancers participating in Aria will be in the show. After the audition, the casting will be posted as well as the rehearsal schedule for the rest of the week.

3 OBSERVERS Observer Passes can be purchased at the Info Desk for $75. Please remember we will only be accepting cash on-site. Observer Pass holders will be allowed into all Aria and Crash Course classes. Observers will NOT be allowed into the casting audition or any rehearsals. PALOOZA STORE We will be selling Intensive specific apparel as well as Break the Floor merchandise at the DancerPalooza store located by the DancerPalooza General Info Desk. CLASS & ATTIRE Aria will run like a conservatory style Intensive. Please dress and act as professional as possible. Please keep this in mind with your attire as well (i.e. no runs in your tights, etc.) Girls: - Black Leotard - Pink Tights - Hair in a bun - Shoes/Pointe Shoes Boys: - Black or white tights - Black or white shirt (cap sleeve or sleeveless) - Black or white socks - Black or white ballet shoes

4 POINTE CLASSES For all pointe classes, we ask that dancers who are trained in pointe to please wear their pointe shoes. For any girls (and boys) that are not on pointe, you will participate on flat. 5 BIOS - DIRECTOR Francisco Gella s distinguished career as a dancer, choreographer, artistic director, dance educator, and social entrepreneur spans more than twenty years - since he took his first formal dance class at the University of Washington at the age of nineteen. His award- winning, innovative choreography, and highly effective teaching methods are sought after by professional companies, universities, and conservatories, across North America and around the globe. Francisco s choreographic commissions include Repertory Dance Theatre, Pacifica, California, Pennsylvania s Shut-Up and Dance Production, PHILADANCO s Danco on Danco program, Laguna Dance Festival, Tucson Regional, University of Utah Ensemble, University of Washington Faculty Concert, Irvine Valley College, East, DANCO/II, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing & Visual Arts, and Orange County High School for the Arts. Among the recognition he has received includes numerous Choreography Awards at the Youth America Grand Prix International Competition, and the Choreography Award at the National Regional Dance America Conference in In 2013, Francisco premiered Concentric Harmonies at Celebrate Dance in Los Angeles, a work that went on to receive the Grand Prize at the McCallum Theatre Choreography Festival in In 2014 and 2015, his work Solstice, performed by the Phoenix had its world premier at the 60th Anniversary Gala of the Beijing Dance Academy and its European premiere at Poland s prestigious Lodz International Festival. At the end of this month, his work Souvenirs de Mouvement will be featured at the nationally-recognized Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing & Visual Arts annual Flying Horse Gala. Francisco is the founding artistic director of NUEVO School of Contemporary Dance and COLABO Youth Dance Collective ( ), Chief Creative Officer of Francisco Gella Dance Works, the director of ARIA Intensive, founding director of + (beyond technique) workshops, the founding artistic director of New Century Dance Project, and the lead ballet faculty of the 24 Seven Dance Convention. As a member of PHILADANCO from , Francisco is thrilled to be invited back to make a contribution to a company that influenced him so significantly as an artist. Born in Bacolod City, Philippines, he now resides in Los Angeles, California. Julie Friedrich s distinguished career as a professional dancer, mentor, and dance educator in the areas of ballet and contemporary dance spans more than 18 years since she joined her first professional company at the age of 17. Julie received her primary dance education from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and Meredith Baylis of the Joffrey School. Upon graduation, Julie joined the American Repertory under the direction of Septime Webre, and then went onto join Les Grands s Canadiens in Montreal under the direction of Lawrence Rhodes. Discovering her passion for contemporary dance during her time with Les Grands s Canadiens, she made the move to Europe where she danced professionally for the following five years. She has danced works by George Balanchine, Anthony Tudor, Ohad Naharin, Septime Webre, Nacho Duato, Guy Weizman, Alex Ketley, and various other European choreographers.currently Julie teaches, choreographs and mentors students across the country. She teaches full time at the Windward School in Culver City under the direction of Alesia Young, and tours the country with Francisco Gella as part of his artistic team as one of his principle faculty mentors. In 2017 Julie became the associate artistic director of the Professional Dance Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico under the direction of Francisco Gella. Julie has been on faculty at the ARIA intensive as part of Dancerpalooza for the last two years. Through her guidance, Julie has numerous Young Arts winners and her students have gone on to study at the Juilliard School, USC/Kaufman, SUNY Purchase, Tisch at NYU, and the Boston Conservatory just to name a few. Professionally, she has former students working in such companies as ATE9, Kyle Abraham, Aspen Santa Fe, Cirque Du Soleil, and on Broadway. In 2013, President Obama and the White House named Julie one of the most influential arts teachers in the country for her mentorship of young dancers.

6 GARRETT ANDERSON Garrett began his training in Walnut Creek, CA under the direction of Richard Cammack and Zola Dishong at the Contra Costa Centre. He went on to study on scholarship at San Francisco school and then in Pacific Northwest s professional division. In 2001, Garrett joined San Francisco as a member of the corps de ballet and in 2005 was promoted to soloist. After seven years in the company, he and his wife left In 2008 to join the Royal of Flanders in Antwerp, Belgium, as a first soloist. There he toured extensively throughout Europe and the world. In January of 2011, he returned to the United States to dance with Trey McIntyre Project. Following this tour, he joined Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in August of In August of 2016 Garrett became Chair of the Dance Dept. at New Mexico School for the Arts. He has since performed two seasons with SF Danceworks in San Francisco for which he was named as one of the years outstanding male performers by Dance Europe in Garrett has worked personally with such choreographers as Jiri Kylian, Mats Ek, Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Alejandro Cerrudo, Christopher Wheeldon, Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp and more. Garrett has also been a Guest artist with LED, Chicago, Civic ballet of Chicago, and Chicago Reparatory. Garrett was the recipient of the American Theatre national dance scholarship and holds a B.A. from St. Mary s college of California. Beginning in July of 2018, Garrett will become the Artistic Director of Idaho in Boise. COURTNEY ANDERSON Courtney (Wright) Anderson began her training in San Diego and continued training in Colorado. She finished her training at Pacific Northwest School where she was able to perform regularly with the company. She also met her husband, Garrett Anderson dancing at PNB in Seattle. The two joined San Francisco and danced there for 8 years. Courtney and her husband then moved to Antwerp, Belgium and for 3 years, danced with Royal of Flanders as a Soloist. Moving back to the States, Courtney joined The Suzanne Farrell for one season, performing Soloist and Principal roles of many Balanchine s. She has also appeared as a Guest Artist with Contra Costa, Pacific Youth, Chicago, Ruth Page Civic, and Ron de Jesus. Courtney began her ballet teaching career in Chicago, teaching at Chicago and Lou Conte Dance. She was most recently on Dance Faculty at New Mexico School for the Arts, and will be teaching company class with Idaho beginning the 2018/19 season. SALEEMAH KNIGHT Saleemah E. Knight is an internationally recognized interdisciplinary artist in the concert and commercial dancer realms and a professor of dancer at the highly-acclaimed USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. Saleemah holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in dance from the University of California, Irvine and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona School of Dance. Her dance technique training, stems from reputable concert dance companies, such as Gus Giordano Chicago, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and River North Chicago. As a performer Saleemah has been a featured dancer in Disney s world renowned production, The Lion King Broadway Musical and has danced alongside internationally known recording artists and icons, such as Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Jillian Michaels, Jamie Foxx, Tyrese and many other prominent commercial artists. Saleemah s choreographic expertise has grabbed the attention of entertainers worldwide.saleemah was also commissioned by Cinema Giants to choreograph the Que Viva La Vida music video for international Puerto Rican pop artist, Wisin (formerly of Wisin y Yandel) as well as the La Malquerida music video for Latin pop princess, Chiquis Rivera. Saleemah E. Knight currently teaches Jazz Dance technique as well as theory courses in the areas of world studies, jazz history/culture and popular culture on faculty as the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, choreographs productions and teaches master classes worldwide. She is also the artistic inspiration behind a line of youth inspired dance active wear called Saleemahwear, Saleemah is known for her outstanding instruction and choreography in Jazz, Jazz-Funk and Contemporary Jazz.

7 MARTIN HARVEY Martin is a trained British actor and former professional ballet dancer. His early acting credits include; Michael, west end production of Peter Pan, Oliver, west end production of Oliver, Young Pip (opposite Sir Anthony Hopkins) in Disney's Great Expectations, Dominic Barber in the Central TV pilot, Zero Option and the same character in the resulting series, Saracen. At 11 years old, Martin joined the Royal School, graduating at 17 into London's Royal Company. In a 12 year career he danced many principal roles, including; Crown Prince Rudolf in Mayerling, Onegin in Onegin, Colas in La Fille Mal Gardee, Lascaut in Manon and Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. He then went on to appear as Johnny Castle in the hit west end production of Dirty Dancing, for which he received the UK Critics' Circle Spotlight Award. Martin is now based out of New York where he has appeared on screen alongside Alan Rickman and William H. Macy in the hit television shows Gossip Girl and All My Children and on stage with the Metropolitan Opera in Carmen and Manon Lescaut. He also received rave reviews for these portrayals of Zach in A Chorus Line and Carnival Boy in Carousel. ALISON STROMING Alison Stroming was adopted from Recife, Brazil at the age of four months and started dancing when she was three years old. She was accepted to The School of American where she began her formal ballet training at the age of nine. She attended the American Theater Summer Intensive in New York in Franco De Vita, principal of the JKO School at ABT, offered her a full scholarship to the new Junior Division where she then continued her studies. With JKO she has performed in numerous technical demonstrations and performances at The Juilliard School, Guggenheim Museum, City Center, The Metropolitan Opera House, Joyce Theater, and The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In 2010, Alison won the title of Miss New York s Outstanding Teen and represented the state of New York at Miss America's Outstanding Teen where she won Overall Talent. Alison danced for two seasons with the Alberta in Canada where she toured across the country and also performed as a soloist with recording artist Sarah McLachlan in her Hope Rising! Concert. She then danced with San Jose under the direction of Jose Manuel Carreno performing works by George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, Ohad Naharin, Dwight Rhoden, and Jorma Elo. She is now in fourth season with the Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York City. With the company, she has performed all across the United States and internationally in Israel, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, and Budapest. Alison starred in her first national Ad Campaign Strength In Beauty, Beauty in Strength with Tumi Luggage in 2011 and since then has been featured in advertisements for Under Armour, Urban Outfitters, Adidas, and most recently, American Eagle, which was featured on Times Square billboards. In addition to performing across the globe, Alison also travels to teach master classes, provide coaching and choreography. ABIGAIL SIMON Recently, ABIGAIL SIMON returned to the Lyric Opera of Chicago to dance in Rob Ashford s production of Carmen after performing there previously as Louise in Ashford s Carousel. Abigail later reprised the role with the Houston Grand Opera. She appeared with the Lyric Opera as a principal dancer in Capriccio with Renee Flemming. In recent years, she has performed throughout America in more than 30 Nutcracker productions as the Sugar Plum Fairy. Other recent roles include Juliet in Prokofiev s Romeo and Juliet (Vienna). She trained at The School of American and performed with American Theatre prior to dancing for ten years with Chicago s Joffrey (principal roles in The Merry Widow, Tarantella, Night, Kettentanz, Reflections, and many other featured roles). In 2014, Abigail signed as an Ambassador/Capezio artist and now routinely models internationally, and is recognized as an international manager, guest speaker, and teacher/ballet coach. In the summer of 2017, Abigail partnered with Ray Thompson to form Simon and Thompson Entertainment. Clients include dancers from New York City, San Francisco, The Royal of London, and Broadway s An American in Paris.
