1 prosveta News Your for Official Publication of the Slovene National Benefit Society YEAR CVI USPS: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 2013 ISSUE 7 ISSN: A winter sun-and-fun break for Miss SNPJ by KRISTEN CUSHMAN (138) Miss SNPJ 2013 STRABANE, Pa. Over the past two months, I ve had the opportunity to leave the frigid weather of Pennsylvania and enjoy some sunshine and blue skies in California and Florida. I was extremely excited to visit Lodge 304 in San Francisco and Lodge 603 in Samsula, and I experienced a great deal of hospitality and fraternalism during my visits. During my trip to San Francisco, I had the chance to see some of the local sights and attend the annual Pust celebration hosted by Lodge 304. Shortly after arriving, I was greeted warmly by members of the Wood family (723), who were kind enough to show me around the city on Friday and Saturday afternoon. On Friday evening, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at San Francisco s Basque Cultural Center with Lodge 304 President Ivan Dodic, Ivan s wife Audrey, and additional SNPJ members from Lodge 723. It was great to spend time with these folks, and Fred Mlakar (723) even treated us to some polka music after our meal! We enjoyed another delicious meal and wonderful music by the Fred Mlakar Band the next evening during the Pust dinner, and there was no doubt that I was in good company! It was great to spend time with members I met during my visit to Fontana SEE MISS SNPJ WINTER FUN ON PAGE 7 Lodge 723 fund-raising efforts benefit many by PHYLLIS WOOD Lodge 723 FONTANA, Calif. Reflecting on the past year, Fontana Lodge 723 participated in several fraternal, volunteer and fund-raising activities for the community. As SNPJ members, fraternalism is alive and well in our Lodge! Our first activity was participation in the national Join Hands Day event. Lodge members and polka dancers made fleece blankets for the siblings of children at the Ronald McDonald House in Loma Linda, Calif. Each blanket was lovingly hand-tied during a dance held in March. The dancers really enjoyed participating in this activity, and it was wonderful to see couples working on blankets together. Fifty-five blankets were taken to the Ronald McDonald House where they were graciously accepted. Special thanks to the coordinators of this activity, Julianne Wood, Diana Rote and Eric Wood. October brought Make A Difference Day. As one of the annual days to meet the community s needs, Lodge 723 chose two projects. The first was a donation of selected items for the soldier boxes that were being assembled at the California Fraternal Congress annual meeting as part of their annual volunteer project. Lodge 723 donated $150 toward items for the boxes, and Courtney Looney and Phyllis Wood purchased the items. Phyllis was joined by Julianne Wood at the annual meeting and participated in the compilation of the boxes. SNPJ donated many items for inclusion as well. Our second Make A Difference Day activity SEE FONTANA BENEFITS ON PAGE 8 JULianne Wood [right] presented Christy Bayliss of the Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House the Lodge s donation of hand-tied blankets. SNPJ was well represented at the annual Pust dinner and celebration hosted by San Francisco Lodge 304. PERIODICAL MATERIAL Utopians Lodge prepares for an 85 th anniversary by GERRI TREBETS Lodge 604 Secretary CLEVELAND It is with pride that Utopians Lodge 604 members celebrate their 85th anniversary in existence. When SSPZ merged with SNPJ in 1941, Utopians took Lodge number 204, but a Pennsylvania Lodge had already adopted that number, so the Utopians Lodge became number 604. And so began a very successful, eventful era with many active members over 600 members in total. We Utopians have had many notable members in our Lodge, namely John Pecon; Tony Vadnal; Tony Gerchman; past president Tony Vrh; Mary Dolsak; my father, John Spilar, a National Board District Representative; and Whitey Mathews, to name just a few. We continue to carry on the success of Lodge 604 and we acknowledge member Tony Petkovsek, who has contributed greatly to our Slovenian heritage. When the late Betty Rotar, who was a member of Lodge 147, asked how the Utopians Lodge got its name, John Spilar replied that Utopia is a land where everyone gets along with each other, and that was the aim of our Lodge. And yes, that was our aim from that day forward. The 14-member cabinet was sworn-in at the National Assembly immediately and took over official duties from the former Janez Janša-led government March 21. In her first statement following the vote, new Prime Minister Bratušek, a 42-year-old who heads the Positive Slovenia (PS) party, said she would lead the team on the path of positive change and progress. We are faced with difficult decisions, but I m confident that we have the wisdom, energy and perseverance to achieve our goals, Bratušek told reporters. Bratušek, Slovenia s first female prime minister, also called for bipartisanship, saying that those who think that we can succeed divided... are dead wrong. I hope parties can work together and achieve an understanding that the time for politicking is over. The only way for us to overcome the crisis is through hard work and cooperation. While reiterating that she was confident that Slovenia could tackle the [economic] crisis on its own, she admitted she was concerned by statements made by former Finance Minister Janez Šušteršič suggesting Slovenia could soon have to ask for a bailout. Given that we face threats that we will have to ask for aid even before our team has started its work, I m curious as to what legacy we will be taking over. The vote on the new government is the culmination of weeks of political negotiations prompted by the collapse of the Janša-led government. Built around the Positive Slovenia party and fellow left-leaning SocDems party, the new government coalition also includes two partners of the former government coalition: the Citizens List and Pensioners parties. Altogether, the coalition controls 49 seats in Slovenia s 90- seat National Assembly. The new cabinet held its maiden session March 21, and individual government ministers carried out their transfers throughout the same day. Brynlee J. Rudd Born Aug. 2, 2012 Cleveland Lodge 126 The members of Lodge 126 welcome Brynlee J. Rudd as their newest member. Brynlee is the daughter of Brent (126) and Courtney Rudd, and the granddaughter of Thomas and Loreen Rudd (126). We welcome Brynlee to the Slovene National Benefit Society and extend our best wishes to her entire family.

I was honored as Woman of the Year from Waterloo, which has been my home away from home since I was a little girl. In my acceptance speech, I failed to mention my escort on stage for the evening, my grandson, 11-year-old Colin Ashworth. He was truly a young gentleman and handled the situation in fine fashion. Thank you, Colin; it was a pleasure having you by my side. Please consider attending the Utopians Lodge 604 anniversary dinner dance, and come on out for a great, fun-filled evening. A busy schedule awaits Lodge 786 by JEAN KOCI Lodge 786 Secretary/Treasurer ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. The next meeting for Orange Coast Lodge 786 will be held Sunday, May 5, at the home of Tony and Lina Saltikov in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Lina is a brand new member of our Lodge, even though she has taken part in many events over the past few years. We re so happy to officially welcome her! Lina came from Portorož, Slovenia, where she grew up. She has lived in many places since arriving to the United States as a young adult, but she loves California. The first thing Lina wanted to do as a new member was offer her home for a meeting and social. She and Tony have a wonderful place on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, so I hope we ll have a typical beautiful California afternoon to enjoy their view. The Camino Los Ramblas exit off the I-5 will take you close to the Saltikov s place. Please call me at (949) for the exact address. The Lodge meeting will start at 1 p.m. Lina promises something good to eat for our main dish, so please bring an appetizer or dessert to share. We ll be making the final arrangements for our Temecula Wine Tasting, which will take place from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, at Wiens Family Cellars. As usual, advance reservations are required, so give me a call to make sure that we have you down for this special day! The May 5 meeting will be the last before our June 30 beach party at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point, Calif., for the Flip Acrobats from Piran, Slovenia (more on this event later), and our July 21 barbecue and swim party. It s going to be a very busy and fun-filled spring and summer on the Orange Coast! 3 3 DENISE HERRON SNPJ Marketing Department Nine lives, but you only have one By my calculations, my cat has four lives left. She just recently used one up when she unsuccessfully tried to beat the closing of the garage door and became trapped. After a few days of walking crooked, she seems no worse for the wear. But the whole ordeal took a few years off my life, I believe. It did, however, stop her from playing her game of chicken with the garage door. Unlike cats, we humans don t have the luxury of nine lives to spend. We can t leap 30 feet off the deck, take a ride in the wheel well of a pickup truck, or race to beat the lowering of the garage door. We need to be a bit more careful because any one of those antics could spell tragedy for us. We can t afford to be taking cat-like risks; we only have one life, and it s risky enough already. It s because of these everyday risks that we need life insurance. Even without taking chances, there are accidents and illnesses that threaten us daily. To not purchase life insurance is taking a gamble, somewhat like trying to beat the lowering of the garage door. We don t get another chance if we happen to lose the race, and the ones to truly suffer will be our families. If we are taken out of the picture, our family could lose the house, the children may not get to participate in the activities they love, and they may never get the college education that was planned for them. So much can change with just one event, but that s where life insurance can give you peace of mind and your family a second chance. SNPJ offers a variety of life insurance plans that can work for just about anybody. There s no reason for anyone to put the future of their family at risk. We have affordable whole life plans and competitive term policies that can provide the protection you need. You don t have nine lives; you only have one. Contact your Lodge secretary, local agent or the SNPJ Marketing Department at the Home Office for more information on the plan that s best for you. Hungary will help protect Slovenia s air space Lendava (STA) According to a recent agreement made in Len dava by Slovenian Defense Minister Aleš Hojs and Hungarian Defense Minister Csaba Hende, Hungarian fighter jets will join Italian jets to protect Slovenia s air space. The agreement still requires confirmation by the Slovenian government and parliament. After Slovenia became a member of NATO in 2004, Italy took over the air policing on [Slovenia s] territory, but now Italy and Hungary will take turns, Hojs explained. Speaking at a ceremony marking Hungary s national holiday, Hojs, who is now the former Slovenian defense minister, said that cooperation between the two countries was very good, especially in defense where they were not only good partners in the EU and NATO intervention groups, but also on international missions. Hende added that Slovenia and Hungary also shared common values, and that the agreement was a sign of re spect as well as economic and intelligent thinking. Hende expects the agreement could be signed within two months. Delinquent tax listing will go public on April 15 Ljubljana (STA) Slovenia s Tax Administration (DURS) called on tax delinquents to settle their tax debts by March 25 unless they wanted their names to appear on the list of tax debtors when it is made public April 15. Under the Reform Tax Procedure Act passed in November 2012, the names of employers who have fallen more than three months behind with their employee taxes, and tax debtors who owe more than 5,000 euros (approximately $6,500) for more than 90 days, will be published on a monthly basis. DURS will release its initial list on April 15, blacklisting tax debtors as described above as of March 25. The purpose of the measure is to stimulate persons liable for the tax payments to settle their obligations on time. Those who are unable to pay their taxes for reasons they have not been able to influence and have asked for and been granted a deferral or abatement will not be treated as tax debtors and will not be included on the list. In the case of businesses, DURS will publish the business name, owner (names, surnames and date of birth of those owning over 25 percent), base of operation and tax number of the company falling behind in its tax payments. Individuals will be identified by name, surname and date of birth, and in special cases municipality or country of residence. Youth unemployment rose sharply in 2012 Ljubljana (STA) The level of youth unemployment grew faster in Slovenia than in any other Euro pean country last year, surging from 16.7 percent in January 2012 to just over 27 percent by the end of the year, the ZSSS trade union confederation explained to the press in mid-march. ZSSS representatives also highlighted the problem of unpaid internships offered to young people. Youth unemployment has been growing rapidly in the past years, ZSSS representative Goran Lukič said. The number of unemployed young persons has increased by 11,458 from February 2008 through this February. The ZSSS also highlighted the very unfavorable and ugly situation in the field of internships, which are mostly voluntary in Slovenia. In an online poll conducted on a sample of 345 people, the ZSSS discovered that most of the respondents did their internships in the public sector (education, health and public administration), and for many these internships were a compulsory segment of their formal education. Of those completing internships, 210 said they did not receive any payment for their work, not even costs related to their daily commute. And when asked whether they thought the internship helped them find a full-time job, 131 said it did not, while only 100 said it did, Lukič pointed out. The bottom line of this survey is that Slovenia has a big problem, he said, adding that voluntary internships were causing poverty among young people. from the source Banks raising customer fees to cover new tax Ljubljana (STA) Slovenian banks appear ready to shift the burden of the new 6.5 percent Financial Transactions Tax, which entered into force March 1, to their customers. Even more, in most cases the customer fees will exceed the costs banks will face with the new tax, the Consumer Association (ZPS) announced in early March. According to the ZPS, 14 of the 18 banks operating in Slovenia have already increased service fees during the first three months of this year, or plan to do so over the course of the next two months. The services for which fees are being levied include monthly use of online banking for bill payment, cash withdrawals from competitor ATMs, and credit card usage. The fees average a 9.2 percent increase. The increased service fees instituted by as many as 10 banks exceed the 6.5 percent tax on financial services, ZPS representatives explained. The largest service fee increases were reported at Raiffeisen Banka, Postna Banka Slovenije and Banka Celje. In absolute figures, the fees reach up to 20 euros ($26) per year, the ZPS noted. The new Financial Transactions Tax is levied on all transactions involving deposits, withdrawals, transfers, checks and other payment instruments. Services associated with loans, guarantees, cash transactions and insurance brokerage are also subject to the tax, but stock market and investment fund transactions are exempt. CNBC: Slovenia is a secure place to retire Washington, D.C. (STA) According to a recent CNBC report, those who are seeking a secure retirement should move to Slovenia. The Natixis Global Retirement Index Survey ranks Slovenia 16th among 150 countries in terms of retirement security. The United States ranks 19th. Based on data provided by the World Bank, United Nations and other organizations, Natixis, an asset management firm, has set up a new index measuring retirement security based on health expenditures, life expectancy, income inequality, unemployment and the ratio of young workers to retirees. The list is topped by Norway. Switzerland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Austria, Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and France round out the top 10 countries. Zimbabwe is at the very bottom of the list. Slovenia, which instituted a new pension system Jan. 1 under which the retirement age for both genders was raised to 65 years of age, ranks 16th. According to CNBC, the United States was surpassed, surprisingly, by Slovenia, Israel, Japan and the Czech Republic. Primorsko University marks a 10th anniversary Koper (STA) On March 18, the University of Primorsko launched a weeklong series of events to mark its 10th anniversary. The newest of Slovenia s three public universities was established by parliamentary decree on Jan. 29, 2003, and officially registered exactly 10 years ago. Former Slovenian Education Minister Lucija Čok, one of the most vocal advocates of the new university, served as the school s first chancellor. Today, the university consists of seven departments (known as faculties ), the Science and Research Center, the Andrej Marusic Institute, a university library and several units of student housing. Primorsko University offers over 70 courses attended by more than 6,700 students, and, with over 700 staff members, is one of the biggest employers along the Slovenian coast. The highlight of some 30 events organized to mark the anniversary was a special ceremony held March 22 during which the university conferred an honorary doctorate degree to law expert Boštjan M. Zupančič, who delivered his inaugural lecture March 25. The university will also sign an agreement to become an associate member of the Valdoltra orthopedic clinic. Research institute plays host to science festival Ljubljana (STA) The Jožef Stefan Institute, Slovenia s leading research institute, organized the 21st annual Jožef Stefan Days the week of March The festival featured a variety of discussions and panels on topical issues in science. The main goal is to open the doors of the institute and science, as such to as broad an audience as possible, Institute director Jadran Lenarčič told the press. The science festival offered lectures on topics such as the Higgs boson (a major development in basic particle physics), the challenges facing contemporary seismology, non-equilibrium dynamics in correlated systems, and the use of water as a source of energy. A number of awards for the best doctorate presentations, as well as for young researchers, were presented later in the week. The weeklong science festival concluded March 23 with an open house at the Jožef Stefan Institute. As Lenarčič explained, the open house generally attracts around a thousand visitors, which is a significant number considering around 8,000 people visit the institute each year. 800 years of visits to the Postojna Caves Postojna (STA) This year marks the 800th anniversary of the first visit to the landmark Postojna Caves, the evidence of which is indicated by an inscription found on one of the walls. Experts have yet to establish what tool the first visitors used to leave their mark in the caves. The anniversary was launched with the introduction of a memorial two-euro coin and will continue with a joint memorial stamp issued by the Slovenian and Austrian postal services. The latter will commemorate the oldest underground post office. The underground post office operated during the time of the Austro- Hungarian Empire, but the Postojna Caves postmark was in both Slovenian and German, which was quite unusual for Austrian postmarks, said Marian Batagelj, the director of the company that operates the caves. At first, only the front portion of the cave system was known. Almost 200 years ago local resident Luka Čeč discovered the inner area. Since 1819, when the cave first opened to tourists, 36 million visitors have been recorded. Slovenia s most-trusted profession? Firefighter Ljubljana (STA) According to the results of the 2013 Trusted Brand Survey conducted by Reader s Digest publishing, Slovenians and Europeans in general view firefighters as the most trustworthy profession. Politicians were viewed as the least trusted professionals. People across Europe are losing trust in politicians and are very worried about the future, Reader s Digest Slovenija Editor-in-Chief Lidija Petek explained during a March 7 press conference held in Ljubljana. Trust in politicians sank to the lowest level in the past 13 years since Readers s Digest began conducting the survey, Petek said. In Europe, 92 percent of the people see firefighters as the most trustworthy professionals, while in Slovenia the percent was even higher, reaching 95. The head of the Slovenian Firefighters Alliance, Anton Koren, said this was a great recognition for both volunteer and professional firefighters. The top five most trustworthy professions in Slovenia include nurses, pilots, farmers and doctors. On average, Slovenians trust journalists (49 percent) more so than other Europeans do (30 percent). Slovenians also view soccer players as more trustworthy than lawyers and judges (33 percent as opposed to 24 percent and 20 percent, respectively). The least trustworthy professionals according to Slovenians are politicians, who earned only seven percent of Slovenians trust. However, even this figure is above the European average of four percent. The 2013 Trusted Brand Survey was conducted during the months of September and October 2012 among more than 18,000 Europeans, including a thousand Slovenians. SNPJ Slovenian Heritage Center Cookbook For the Ages Muzej ob 60-letnici z razstavo o Troštu HEADLINE: Museum with an exhibition about Trošt for its 60th anniversary TOPIC: In the Nikolaj Pirnat exhibition rooms at Idrija s castle, the Idrija City Museum recently opened a traveling exhibition on Janko Trošt, who was a cultural worker, teacher and artist. In the history of Slovenian museums, Trošt is recognized as the founder of two Slovenian museums, one in Idrija and one in Ribnica. The exhibition is a part of the events the museum is hosting to mark its 60th anniversary. The main event was the recent opening of the exhibit titled Janko Trošt , which describes the life of a man of many talents: teacher, artist, researcher, topographer, ethnographer, puppeteer... There are many Trošt pridobiti denar Funadcije za šport. DELO tourists each year. Projekt Doživi Hrastovlje bo zaživel konec tega tedna in ga bodo potem ponavljali vse leto vse sobote, nedelje in praznike in ob prihodih potniških ladij v Koper. Vasica z znamenitimi freskami, ki prikazujejo stvarjenje sveta, izgon iz raja, prizore iz pasijona in predvsem mrtvaški ples, HEADLINE: In Solkan they are again waiting for adventurers TOPIC: The Soča Fun Park, which attracted close to 2,000 visitors in its first five months, mostly from Italy, has again opened its doors after a break for the winter. This year there will be a few new attractions for visitors. The Adventure Park will offer a 984-foot-long bravery descent along a steel cable from one bank of the Soča River to the other. The park already maintains a learning path and small zoo with domestic animals. Soča Fun Park, ki ga je lani v prvih petih mesecih delovanja obiskalo okrog 2000 paintings already on exhibit in the castle, but for the first time Trošt s watercolors are displayed Veduta of Idrija, which he created between 1948 and Mestni muzej Idrija je pred dnevi v Razstavišču Nikolaja Pirnata na idrijskem gradu odprl gostujočo razstavo o Janku Troštu, vsestranskem kulturnem delavcu, pedagogu, umetniku, ki se je v zgodovino slovenskega muzealstva vpisal tudi kot ustanovitelj kar dveh slovenskih muzejev: idrijskega in ribniškega. Razstava sodi v niz dogodkov, s katerimi bo muzej obeležil letošnjo 60-letnico svojega delovanja. 21. januarja, natanko pred 60. leti, je tedanji Ljudski odbor mestne občine Idrija ustanovil Mestni muzej v Idriji, katerega poslanstvo vse od tedaj ostaja enako: ohranjati in varovati je združila svoje turistične moči. Kdor bo kupil vstopnico, bo imel voden ogled vasi, vstop v cerkvico z ogledom fresk ter galerij Jožeta Pohlena in Viktorja Snoja. O širini njegovega delovanja priča vrsta obsežnih, tudi nagrajenih stalnih in občasnih razstav, najprepoznavnejši objekti kulturne, zgodovinske in tehniške dediščine, odmevni Muzejski večeri, muzejske delavnice in Idrijski razgledi.

Members encourage Relay for Life support by DONNA HELMECY Lodge 158 EUCLID, Ohio Loyalites Donna Helmecy and Amy Noggy, co-captains of Team Determination, would like to thank SNPJ Lodge 158 for sponsoring them again in the American Cancer Society s Relay for Life of Western Lake County, scheduled to be held July at Eastlake North High School. Relay for Life is an overnight event that raises money for and awareness of the programs and services offered by the American Cancer Society. Services include free transportation to and from treatments for patients and their caregivers; free overnight housing when treatments are far from home; and the Look Good, Feel Better program, which teaches women how to deal with side effects of cancer treatment. I suggest attending your local Relay for Life s opening ceremony or the luminaria ceremony, not to see what Relay is about, but to feel it. Watch survivors walk the opening lap with their heads held high, knowing they made it another day. Hear the silence as the names of those honored, supported and remembered are read, followed by the lighting of the luminarias. It s something words cannot express, but sticks in your heart. I know because it s how I got involved with Team Determination. Even though Relay for Life is an overnight event, most of the money is raised before the event even happens. Our Relay for Life is in July, but Team Determination participated in a kick-off rally in January and has been busy raising money since. Each individual on our team has a minimum goal of $100, but we d love to collect more. Donations for Team Determination can be made by sending a check payable to American Cancer Society to Donna Helmecy, 1225 Lost Nation Road, Apt. 105, Willoughby, OH You may call me at (440) for more information. As much as I would love our team to receive a lot of donations, I would like to ask no, challenge other SNPJ members to form a team and join your local Relay for Life, support an existing team with a donation or follow the Loyalites example and be a sponsor. Together we can find a cure for cancer. I d love to hear how other relayers have done. Please drop me a line. Lodge 106 welcomes a new band to the schedule by KEVIN RICHARDS Lodge 106 IMPERIAL, Pa. I was able to attend as a spectator. My grandson, Bailey Phalen, participated, as did my great-granddaughter, Heidi Jorgenson. Participation in this tournament was 4-year-old Heidi s first time bowling. She enjoyed her experience, but not as much as I enjoyed watching her bowl. The ball got a little heavy for her, but she managed to roll it in the right direction. Once the ball left her tiny hands I was able go to the bar, order a drink and return before the ball reached the pins. It was so amusing. At times, the pins stopped the ball from rolling. It s great that these youngsters have the opportunity to participate and gain experience in the sport of bowling. As usual, Sis. Donovan did a great job organizing this year s Youth Telegraphic Tournament. Details from the tournament can be found in Mary s article on page 7. The next Badger Lodge 584 meeting will be held Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. at Mary Queen of Heaven gym, 2360 S. 106th St. The usual coffee and desserts will be served during the social hour following the regular business meeting. Hope to see you there. sale beginning at 8 a.m. Members are encouraged to donate items for this sale. A great deal of progress has already been made at the hall. The first phase was cleaning the grounds by clearing out old trees and debris. In the near future we will be painting the building to improve its curb appeal. Once the landscape is cleaned, we ll be planting the memory trees. We ll continue to provide updates regarding the hall improvements as we move forward. Stay tuned. 7 7 A warmer-weather winter for Miss SNPJ 2013 Miss SNPJ WinTER FUN FROM PAGE 1 last November, including Miss SNPJ 1989 Teresa (Mlakar) Koci (786) and her family. I really enjoyed meeting members from the San Francisco area, including Mr. and Mrs. Dodic, members of the Ravnik family, Miss SNPJ 1990 Lisa (Vidergar) Lucas (723), and many others. I d like to extend a special thank you to all those who made this California visit possible and to everyone who was part of this wonderful experience. I d also like to thank Eric, Phyllis, Julianne and John Wood for providing me with transportation for the weekend and for sending me home with some delicious blood sausage and potica! When I returned home to Pennsylvania, I took part in the SNPJ Winter Classic Bowling Tournament, co -hosted by Sygan, Pa., Lodge 6 and Strabane Lodge 138. It was a lot of fun to enjoy great music, help sell drawing tickets, bowl nine games, and be surrounded by great company over the course of the weekend. Friday s entertainment included Outlaw Karaoke and DJ Dave McMurdy at Lodge 6, and the Johnny Koenig Band put on a great performance at Lodge 138 Saturday night. Thank you to everyone who came out to support my home Lodge and our sister Lodge, and congratulations to all bowlers who participated in this tournament. In early March I traveled to Samsula for Florida SNPJ Days. A number of family members and friends from Lodges near my hometown also attended this festival. We were given the warmest of welcomes from Lodge 603 members and we definitely felt right at home. Shortly after our arrival, my parents Peggy and David (138), Frank and Amy Mavrich (138), and I could see and hear the ocean as we enjoyed a great lunch at Ocean Deck in Daytona, Fla. We were also fortunate enough to soak up some sun and enjoy a delicious dinner with SNPJ National Secretary Karen Pintar and her husband Ken (6), Vince Babe and Beverly Baselj (6), Denny and Carol Brand (6), and Butch and Wendy Kinney (6). Over the course of the next two days, we enjoyed the sights of Florida, had a wonderful time at Lodge 603, and were joined by former Miss SNPJ 2004 Courtney Pabian (138) and Miss SNPJ 2006 Shannon Fetcko (138). The festivities at Lodge 603 included entertainment by the Bob Turcola Orchestra, Marc Bouchard Orchestra, Virgil Baker & Friends, and other talented musicians who took part in the jam sessions. It was great to spend time with Lodge 603 President William Benedict and his wife Sheryl, Ruth and George Benedict, Jeannette Humphrey, and many other Lodge 603 members who helped make this festival a huge success. I was honored to help sell drawing tickets and talk with everyone in attendance. My family, friends and I felt so welcomed. We cannot thank you all enough for your hospitality. I d also like to thank Lodge 603 members, officers and chairpersons for the awesome meals and wonderful gifts. For those who haven t had the chance to attend Florida SNPJ Days, I strongly encourage you to fit it into your schedule; I promise you won t be the least bit disappointed! Several members of Western Pennsylvania Lodges, including SNPJ National Secretary Karen Pintar, made the trip to Samsula, Fla., to celebrate Florida SNPJ Days in March. [Front row] HEIDI Jorgensen, Emily MlakER, Max MlakER, Josh MlakER, Madalaine Brown, [back row] BaiLEy Phalen, TyLER TrickLE, Carley SCHWEIGER and TyLER MoUTHEy participated in the 2013 Milwaukee area Youth Telegraphic Bowling Tournament. SNPJ Youth Telegraphic Bowl a strike in the Milwaukee area by MARY DONOVAN (584) District 6 Athletic Director MILWAUKEE It was an exciting afternoon of bowling and socializing at the recent Youth Telegraphic Bowling Tournament in Milwaukee. This year we had nine children compete: Madalaine Brown, Max Mlaker, Emily Mlaker, Josh Mlaker, Tyler Trickle, Tyler Mouthey, Bailey Phalen and Carley Schweiger, as well as a new addition this year, Heidi Jorgensen. The kids rolled the ball down the alley in hopes of getting a strike. Their anticipation of the ball knocking down the pins was great to see. It has really been wonderful to watch this group of kids improve their bowling skills over the years, and most of them are turning into some very impressive youth bowlers! We hope to see them bowl in some of the other SNPJ events in the future. After bowling, the kids were invited to a luncheon. Badger Lodge 584 sponsored this fine event, and many of the parents brought a dish to pass. Each child was awarded a certificate of participation, and friendships were renewed as the kids enjoyed catching up with each other. No SNPJ event would be complete without the cheering support of parents, grandparents and other relatives. We had a very encouraging group that shared the excitement when the pins went down. I d again like to thank all of the children and adults who participated. It s thanks to all of you that these events continue to evolve. The kids are making friendships they ll never forget, thanks to SNPJ! Most people think that when March comes it s supposed to be sunny and warm. We ve had snow the last few days and are expecting more in the coming week. We ll just have to be patient. I don t know why I had so many St. Patrick s Day events scheduled this year, but there were many, and I was really into the Irish swing. SWU Branch 20 Slovene Union of America celebrated St. Patrick s Day and St. Joseph s Day March 12. This club will host its annual grape dance Sept. 22 and celebrate its anniversary Oct. 20. The Slovenian Pensioners Club met the following day. We were sorry to hear that Betty Nadvornik had surgery; but she is doing well now. Betty is a fighter, and I m sure she will do fine. Pensioners Club members will celebrate the club s 51st anniversary April 10. Everyone should bring a dish to share; barbecue sandwiches will be provided by the club. Why don t you join us in April and see how much fun we have? During the meeting, Sharon Ferraro (559) informed us that Bonnie Deke (559), who resides in Wisconsin, broke her ankle recently. A speedy recovery, Bonnie. We hope to see you in Chicago sometime. We were also sorry to hear that Martha Janezic broke her hip, and that Helen Gross has also been laid up. We hope you re both feeling better soon. Sometimes I wonder how I keep up with all my club activities, volunteering for my congressman and visiting many ailing friends. I have to say the busier I am, the more I get done. Continuing with my Irish events, the Joliet Women s Club served all types of Irish food and had entertainers from Ireland at their March meeting. The following night, Otto and I tried to get into Durbin s, a local nightclub located next door to my work, for their Irish celebration. The place was so crowded that we left and visited the good ol Bohemian Restaurant. I must say I enjoyed my first time serving as a national auditor for the Slovenian Union of America at their headquarters in Joliet, Ill. This organization will finally be able to go into the 501-c category and is planning some changes. I m glad that I was able to catch up with Carol Ryba, the treasurer of the organization. I ve been trying to get her to start another SUA branch in Florida. Not that we don t have enough to do, but Otto and I attended the Wheatland Senior Club meeting along with Frank and Carolee Michalek (559), and enjoyed a delicious meal in celebration of St. Patrick s Day. Boy, I wish there was such a celebration for Slovenians as there is for St. Patrick s Day. The meeting entertainment featured a man who showed slides of his daughter, who met and married someone while working in Seoul, South Korea. We saw the entire wedding, and believe me, I ve never seen anything like it the clothing, the ceremony and all the tradition of a South Korean wedding. Finally, the Perpetuum Jazzile group performed in Joliet at the Rialto Theatre. It was so nice to see so many people in attendance, most of whom were representing all the Slovenian organizations in the area, plus the many Slovenians who heard about the show through advertisement. Friendship is what connects this Slovenian choral group, and music is what they live for. This vocal group is currently the biggest Slovenian pop and jazz vocal ensemble. Their repertoire offers an attractive selection of vocal jazz and pop, Brazilian bossa nova, gospel and funk, and is mostly sung a cappella. Their rendition of Slovenia thrilled the audience. They performed two encores and the audience requested more, but all good things must come to end, and so it did. We Slovenians are proud of Perpetuum Jazzile and thank them for sharing their magnificent talents with us. Wherever I go, it isn t unusual for me to meet someone connected with some Slovene organization to which I belong. Seated in front of me at the Perpetuum Jazzile concert was a man whose name, I believe, is Mr. Potsch. He heard me call Otto by name, then turned around and said, If you are Otto, then the lady sitting next to you must be Grace. I couldn t believe his connection. From then on we talked about Slovenians and the SNPJ at every opportunity we had. His parents were members of the SSPZ before it merged with SNPJ in l941. He is the cousin of Lodge 5 Secretary Karen Tomsic, and from then on we found that he knows as many Slovenians as I do. Yes, you never know who you will meet somewhere, somehow. We extend our sincere sympathy to the family of Trudy Schulz (449). There is so much I could say about Trudy she was kind, considerate, sweet, and the most lovable person you would ever want to know. She had been ill for a long time, and can now rest in peace. Trudy was preceded in death by her husband Jack, son David, and sister Lillian Bernasek, all Lodge 449 members. Trudy, her mother Mary Rozina, and sister Lillian were active members of the former Progressive Slovene Women of America (PSWA) I would like to introduce for SNPJ membership Please contact: (Parent or guardian if under age 18) Address: City/State/Zip: Phone: ( ) Indicate Preferred Agent (Optional) My Name: My Lodge Number: Address: City/State/Zip: Phone: ( ) Each individual must be informed that an agent will contact him/her and the referral must have some interest in SNPJ in order for the recommender to be considered valid. We are happy to hear that Cecilia and Bob Dolgan (576) will be moving to LaGrange, Ill. Wow, what an asset for the Slovenian community here! There is so much I could say about Cecilia and her active involvement in the Cleveland Slovenian community. Welcome to the Chicago area, Cecilia and Bob. Both of their children reside in this area, so this will be great for the family. Chicago Federation delegates held their regular meeting March 22 at the Slovene Cultural Center in Lemont. In the absence of Vince Rigler, Mike Vidmar served as vice president. Besides the regular, routine business, delegates discussed the Memorial Day services that will be held May 27 in the SNPJ section of Woodlawn Cemetery. There are still some final decisions to be made about the program, but other than that we are hoping for a bright, sunny day. On Aug. 18, the Chicago Federation will host a dinner dance at the Slovenian Center in Lemont. We will be inviting the new Miss SNPJ, and again, final arrangements are still in the making. The next Chicago Federation meeting is planned July 26. The Slovenian Cultural Center hosted an Easter brunch, which was very well attended, on March 24. The food, the décor and an Easter egg hunt for the children made the event festive. We had a good time visiting with all of our friends, including Frank and Carolee Michalek (559) who joined us at the table. The next Slovenian Cultural Center event, the appreciation dinner that members will enjoy free of charge, is planned April 21. Non-members can attend for a nominal fee. Following the Easter brunch, I paid a visit to Michaela Simrayh at the Lemont rehab center. Since I usually sing with her while attending activities at the Cultural Center, we were both singing in the room when the nurse came in and said how much the other patients were enjoying it. We laughed, then proceeded to talk about all the events she has missed while recovering from hip surgery. Easter will have passed by the time this article is published, but I m hoping it was a wonderful holiday for all of you. Until next time, be happy and stay healthy.
