5 P A G E 5 Counter Attack: Dakota Sturla 7 questions for Davis greats When did you join Davis Water Polo Club and play your first game? I believe I first joined DWPC when I was about 8 years old. My sister had started playing with a group of girls after being coached by Jamey at Aquadarts, and I tagged along (in true little-sister fashion). What did you like most about water polo? I have always loved the physical and competitive aspects of water polo... It's so much fun playing such a quick paced game that is full of tiny battles- each sprint for a loose ball, each field block opportunity or intercepted pass--there is so much more than just goal scoring going on, and I love the challenge of winning those little battles throughout the game. In this year s classic CIF Sectional Division 1 Championship match-up between Davis High Are you superstitious? and St. Francis, 17 goals were scored. Sixteen of those goals were scored by DWPC athletes I've never considered myself to be a very superstitious person or athlete, but that's probably just because any time I tried to create a superstitious habit it wouldn't work out the way I hoped. Did you have a pre-game ritual? In high school I became familiar with the concept of visualization and mental training after UC Davis' sport psychologist Dr. Paul started meeting with our team a couple times each season. By the end of my college career, I used visualization and mental training to practice away from the pool and prepare myself for quicker decision making during games. Did you have a pre-game play list? If so, what was your favorite song before a big game? In high school, I loved listening to techno with my teammates before games. Eventually I stopped using my headphones before games and chose to stretch/warm-up without music so that I could familiarize myself with the sounds of the pool deck environment. What s your favorite water polo memory? Rushing from the u16 bronze medal JOs game straight to Oakland airport for our team to catch a plane to Hawaii (and later winning that tournament with our only sub being Hailey Wright who was then about 10 years old!) A top 4 finish at JO's AND a trip to Hawaii with your best friends... how lucky can a group of 14 year old girls get!? What question would you like asked in our next Counter Attack? What was your favorite pool to play at? D W P C S U M M E R N E W S L E T T ER
