Kids are heading back to school and things tend to be a little busier until the routine settles in again. Football season is upon us. Three more state H.O.G. rally s coming up in the next couple months. September is the Georgia Rally in Columbus Georgia. The same week is the Mississippi Rally in Natchez, Mississippi. Both look promising as far as things to do. Florida s Rally is in October; 22-25th. The Florida Rally begins on Wednesday and is 4 days instead of the usual 3 day event. It is in Ft. Walton again this year, which was a good venue last year. The riding event we did in June seemed to go over very well; apart from the heat. We are planning on another designed for two-up riding in October November time frame when it is a little cooler. Moe s did a great job of handling our food for that event. Everything was included from the food, drinks and ice down to the forks, knives and napkins. We could have eaten anywhere with the type set-up. Thank you Diann Ragazzo and Beth Burrow for getting this set up. We have had several great rides recently including the World Wide Ride in June. Thanks go out to the many road captains for taking the lead and coordinating those. If you are interested in becoming a road captain, and we always need more, see myself or Head Road Captain, Doctor Dan Harrison. It is that time of year to start thinking about officers for the chapter for next year. If you are interested in any of the positions or want to nominate someone please let me know. I am starting the list. The chapter officers are, director, assistant director, treasurer, activities director, secretary, membership, safety officer, head road captain, photographer, newsletter editor, web master, ladies of Harley, chaplain, and historian. Your H.O.G. Director; Eddie

Page 2 Hog Caller LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Hey all! Summer is here!!! As all of you know we are in the midst of our summer riding season. The weather is hot and the road is buzzing with all kinds of summer activity. This means the road is extremely busy with everyone heading in different directions pursuing an extravaganza of activities. This time of year also brings our wonderful dog days of summer. With this comes the constant threat of afternoon showers. These come upon us at any time, most of which are in the latter hours of the day but don t count on that. These storms hit you fast and furious at times reeking havoc on your commute and yes...bring various kinds of danger along with them. It is to your advantage to be aware and prepared for these dangers. Most of us know, or should know that when rain first starts after many days of dry weather, it s when it s the most dangerous since there s a lot of oil and dirt on the road. Wait an hour or two for the rain to wash away the oil/dirt before riding since the road surfaces are at their slipperiest. If it s just drizzle, then the road will remain slippery. Also, white lines on the roads will have become ice rinks, metal plates/manholes are super dangerous, avoid them like the plague. Another thing to keep in mind is when riding and you see a colored rainbow on the ground, watch it. It s got nothing to do with the gay movement, chances are it s oil and it is NOT your friend. When you need to brake, apply more rear brake than normal. If your front wheel starts sliding you re done for, if your rear wheel slides you can easily correct. Do not brake strongly if possible. Brake gently. If you need to urgently apply your brakes, pump them so that you do not start aquaplaning. Railway crossing are to be taken as straight as possible. Remember the railway tracks are metal, and wet metal is slippery. Straighten your bike. Be VISIBLE! Give yourself plenty of distance between you and other vehicles. Reduce your speed. If lightning starts, get off the road. It s just not worth it. Riding in the rain will at times be necessary, and you should not stop riding just because it is raining. Relax and enjoy the ride. You are after all riding a motorcycle and that is fun but please be mindful of the dangers. See you on the road! Ride safe! Special K

Volume 181 Page 3 MAKING THE PROPER U-TURN One of the most common questions asked by riders is how to properly make a U-turn on a motorcycle. The best way to learn how to make a U-turn is to practice in a parking lot using these instructions the same ones I use in my classes and in my book, "Ride Like A Pro." The following guidelines are for making a U-turn to the left. To set up your U-turn practice area, mark off a U-shaped area approximately 34 feet long and 24 feet wide. You can use chalk, cones, or tennis balls as markers. Put one marker in each corner of the U-turn and no more than two or three markers down each side. Keep in mind that you can set up the U-turn as wide as you care to. However, 24 feet is the size of your average side street. Pictured here is a rider making a U-turn in a coned-off practice area. The trick to the U-turn is to use a dip. Mark a pivot point about 12 feet from the end of your U- turn space. (See diagram below.) Hug the right side of your marked-off area, then just before you approach your pivot point, turn the bars quickly to the left, away from the pivot point, then to the right toward the pivot point. Once your front tire is heading toward the pivot point, quickly snap your head and eyes as far to the left as you possibly can. In other words, you re looking over your left shoulder.

Page 4 Hog Caller MAKING THE PROPER U-TURN(Cont d) The entire time you re performing the U-turn you need to be in the friction zone and have a little pressure on the rear brake. Your speed should be about 5 mph. Allow the motorcycle to lean as you turn the handlebars. You need only lean about as far as the bike leans when it s sitting on the kickstand. Don t ever look at the opposite side of the U-turn area. Even a split-second glance in that direction will cause you to steer the motorcycle toward the left side of the turn doing that will make your turn considerably wider than 24 feet. Most full-size cruisers can turn in 18 feet, meaning you have 6 feet of error. The most common mistake riders make during this exercise is looking at the opposite side of the U-turn instead of immediately turning their head and eyes as far to the left as possible. The second most common mistake is going too slowly and then attempting to turn with the bike straight up you must have a little momentum in order to lean the bike. Mistake number three is pulling the clutch in or releasing the throttle right in the middle of the U-turn. Doing either one of those two things will cause the bike to tip over, as gravity will pull you to the ground when there's no power to the rear wheel. Mistake number four is briefly straightening out the handlebars as the bike transitions to the left. Straightening out the handlebars, even for a split second, will cause the bike to go straight for two or three feet, which will cause you to lose space while making the U-turn. Hopefully these techniques will help you on your future road trips! Ride safe! Special K

Volume 181 Page 7 FROM THE CHAPLAIN Carrot, Egg or Coffee Bean? You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again. A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed that as one problem was solved, a new one arose. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She then pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me, what do you see?" "Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied. She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, Mother?" Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity -- boiling water -- but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water. "Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?" Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity? Do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become

Page 8 Hog Caller FROM THE CHAPLAIN (Cont d) hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor of your life. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hours are the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you changed by your surroundings or do you bring life, flavor, to them? ARE YOU A CARROT, AN EGG, OR A COFFEE BEAN?
