1 Panda Notes October 20th, 2017, Issue 9 Letter from a Parent: What s more, CDIS is a faith-based school, so besides learning academics, children can learn about the world, feel the beauty of life, and overall grow in health with grateful and kind hearts. Last summer, I moved from Toronto to In the past year, with the help of the teachers, my children have gotten used to their new school life quickly and made their own friends. I have also taken part in PTO activities, such as PTO choir, Gower arranging class, and painting class. CDIS is like a family, and I have started making a lot of friends here. I constantly learn and improve myself and grow with my children which helps me have an insight into their

2 Chengdu with my two children. I was worried about choosing a school for them. After comparing CDIS with other international schools in Chengdu, we chose CDIS. We chose CDIS not only for its proven track record, but also for its friendly staff and international culture. Because of all this, I have grown to care deeply about CDIS. school life. CDIS has been in Chengdu for 20 years. From the bottom of my heart, I hope CDIS will continue to improve and that children in this environment continue to grow healthy bodies and joyful hearts. 3 All games during the event will operate on a ticketing system where you buy game tickets to play; every pre-ordered admission ticket includes 10 free game tickets. Tickets sold at the door DO NOT come with 10 free game tickets. Attendees will be responsible for their own transportation home; no buses will be provided. Ticket order forms to pre-order tickets have already been given to each student and should be turned in to their homeroom teacher along with the money for the tickets. The deadline for pre-order tickets is October 25th.

4 Book Character Day Coming up on Friday, October 27th! Students and staff can come to school dressed as their favorite book character, or any book character! Don't forget to plan and prepare your costumes. Judges will be looking for originality, creativity, and costumes made at home are a plus. There will be prizes as well. Scary costumes will NOT be allowed to participate! Please plan to wear a costume that fits the theme of a book and that stays within the school dress code. More information will be coming soon!

5 In Elementary music class, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders have already begun working on songs for the Christmas Program! If you or your child would like access to these songs at home please click the link below to listen to them. Extra practice is always good! Click Here

6 On Tuesday, BOE visited CDIS to donate a 50 Gat screen TV to CDIS. Mr. Hwang Kim, father of 8th grader John Kim, brought the TV; a gift from BOE General Manger Guobo Yang. Mr. Yang wishes to express his appreciation for everything CDIS does for the children of BOE families. Many, many thanks to Mr. Yang and Mr. Kim; we will deanitely put this meaningful gift to good use! Tardy Reminder! Add it all up and the arst ten minutes of class has elapsed and critical learning has been missed! Every minute counts in learning and we want your child to succeed! We encourage you to have your child at Did you know that your child may be losing important learning time each day if they are late to school even by just a few minutes? Upcoming College Campus Visits October 24, 2017: the University of British Columbia will be visiting, 12:00 pm 1:00 pm in the Multipurpose Room. October 30, 2017: Yale and the National University of Singapore will be visiting, 9:30 am 11:00 am in room 312. November 7, 2017: Savannah School of Art and Design will be visiting, 12:30 pm 1:30 pm in room 312. Dear Parents, Parent-Teacher conferences are just around the corner, so online registration will be starting soon! Please follow the instructions below to schedule appointments for the arst semester of school year. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on three afternoons, October 30, 31, and November 1, 12:30 pm 4:30 pm. Those days are half days for students (they will leave at 11:30 am). Each appointment block is 15 minutes. Accordingly, the starting time of the last appointment for each day is 4:15 pm. Additionally, we ask that you do not make back-to-back appointments with the same teacher as a courtesy to other parents who would like to visit with that teacher. You may begin making appointments starting October 16, at 8:00 am.

8 Parent-Teacher Conference Appointments Scheduling Instructions 1. Go to our school appointments website at 2. Please note that even if you have previously set up an account, you need to register for a new account since the system has cleared all accounts from the previous semester. 3. Register for an account by clicking the "REGISTER" menu tab located near the upper right-hand corner of the screen and completing the online form. Create a user ID and password for yourself and then click the "Register Now" button. 4. Add your child(ren) in the system by clicking the "Add a Student" button. Click the "Insert New" button to add additional children. 5. Click the "date" icon beside each child's name to schedule appointments. Select the staff you wish to book appointments with and the "View Calendars" button. Use the "Ctrl" or "Command" key to select multiple staff to view at the same time. 6. Click on available time slots to book your appointments and then click the "Book Appointments" button to save your bookings. Student Reminders All three days are half days for students (they will leave at 11:30 am). No lunches will be served and there will be no after-school club or athletic activities. Translation Request If you need a translator during your Parent-Teacher conference, please make an arrangement to bring one with you, if possible. In case you are not able to provide your own translator, you can request a translator during your conference by typing Chinese/Korean Translator Needed after your student s FAMILY name at the time of your sign-up. Contact for information about which rooms these classes will be held in. CISA Elementary Soccer Teams In Elementary the theme of the month is Teamwork! Since the team from 4th and 5th grades did such a great job playing at the CISA Soccer Tournament last Saturday, we thought it only natural to recognize them. The CDIS Panda came to this week s Elementary assembly to shake every player s hand and give them their certiacates of recognition. Good job Elementary Pandas!

11 Boys' Middle School Soccer From Coach Blanchard: After ending the regular season the boys were feeling hopeful to take arst going into the CISA U15 Soccer Tournament at LIS. The day started bright and early with CDIS facing off against the tournament wildcard, Confucius International School. The boys had not played Confucius during the regular season and had no idea what they were up against. It took the boys the arst half of the game to agure out their opponent. The boys came out of the second half ready to win. They found their chemistry and easily won over Confucius. This second half set the tone for the whole day, as CDIS continued to win all the way to the championship game. They fought hard beating the home school team, then faced MIS in the semi-anals. A tired MIS was no match for the CDIS boys who showed impressive endurance during the day. The win over MIS secured their spot in the championship game against Leman. It was a hard fought anal game, with LIS putting in an early goal. Late in the arst half TJ Lowe had a chance to tie things up. LIS had a handball right outside the box, and TJ took the free kick placing the ball perfectly in the top left corner. The second half started with the score at 1-1. The boys showed real determination and aght as they took shot after shot, just wide or being blocked, and the score remained the same. Then save after save from CDIS keeper Youngwon Choi held off Leman s attack. The pressure was growing as we reached the anal minutes of the game and it was still tied. In the anal two minutes of the game, CDIS caught a break as TJ Lowe sent in a corner kick. The ball went Gying through the air, passing Leman s defensive line and

12 straight in front of the goal. Yumin Lee made the perfect run and connected with the ball right before it hit the ground, sending the ball into the back of the net. The boys went home with a arst-place trophy and as the season champions! They look forward to their biggest tournament of the year and anal games of the season at the isc Soccer Tournament in Yantai. Boys' High School Volleyball From Hudson Olmstead: The CDIS High School Boys' volleyball blew out any and all competition last week at the CISA tournament, taking home arst place in convincing fashion. Rafael Tobler and Jaeho Lee were an unstoppable duo as they hooked up multiple times for a huge smash. The boys played LIS's White Team in their arst game and won in a quick two sets. The boys then played LIS's Blue Team for the championship in a best of ave games. The boys jumped out to an early lead and did not let LIS back in. The boys are in Wuxi this weekend playing in the isc tournament, working hard to try and defend their championship.

13 Girls' Middle School Soccer From Coach Swift: Last weekend our Middle School girls' soccer team played in the CISA tournament at Léman. Our girls had a fantastic day playing the best soccer I have seen this season. We started the tournament with a game against Léman. They have been our toughest competition this season, but our girls came out strong. We had two great goals scored by Elin Hwang and Meredith Chan. The game was tied until Léman scored with 30 seconds left. This was by far our best game of the season. The girls then played QSI to anish the arst round of the tournament and came away with a 1-0 win. We went straight into the knockout round with another game against QSI to determine 3rd place. We were down 1-0 at the half but rallied in the second half with two great goals from Meredith Chan. This win took us to the championship game against Léman. This was the girls third game in a row with only a couple of minutes rest between games. The girls came into the game with bumps and bruises, with almost no gas left in their tanks. They fought hard but just didn t have the energy. We took 2nd place and as their coach, I could not be more proud of how they represented CDIS.

14 Girls' High School Volleyball From Coach Yoder: The girls' volleyball team fought hard during the CISA tournament last week. They played their arst game was against Léman, winning in 3 sets. Cecilia Dolaz came out strong with hard serves and great passes, while Emma Koo, Anna Shin, and Ashley Chen delivered a strong front line with their spiking. After defeating Léman, the girls advanced to the anals where they faced a tough Meishi team. Yuri Park and JiSoo Shin provided great defense in the back row. Erica Shin and Hana Sato s sets connected with the front row hitters to lead the girls to a 4-1 victory.
