Panda Notes October 19th, 2018, Issue 9
Letter from the National English Honor Society President: As a senior at CDIS, I ve had a lot of international school experiences. CDIS is my third international school. I struggled getting adjusted to CDIS; in fact, for the first semester I didn t feel at home here. Each of my previous schools had been different: Tianjin International School for seven years (I know, I know. I cheer for CDIS now, don t worry), two years at a public school in Minnesota with graduating classes of over 850, an IB international school in Nanjing for one year and now Chengdu International School for my last two years of high school. Many times I arrived on the first day of school being the new kid again. The awkward, somewhat shy, overly-nervous-but-hopeful, fresh face. It s a lot about your perspective as you experience change. How I began to get comfortable here, as well as making great memories was due to many reasons. My family (dad, mom, and sister Sarah) supported and prayed for me during the adjustment time. And as I made new friends, they reached out and welcomed me. But most importantly, my faith enabled me to start over in a new school once again. Saying goodbye so many times in the past has been hard but I have been equipped to get through it. Looking back, I m thankful for the direction my school experiences have taken me and how I ve grown and developed through the process. We are part of a CDIS community whose tide will always ebb and flow with
newcomers and unpredicted goodbyes. As sojourners in this life, we are transient: our time in one place or another often depends on a certain job offer, where our family is, our age, where we feel we're called to be, or for many of us, any number of things beyond our control. Some advice is to try and make the time between the first hello and last goodbye, at CDIS, as memorable as possible. Thoughtfully, Megan Read

CDIS International Day 2018, November 9th! CDIS's annual International Day is a day we come together to celebrate the diversity of our community's many cultures. It's our goal that students learn to appreciate other cultures, build relationships, and improve communication. All students from Foundations all the way to 12th grade will participate! Parents, we want YOU to join in the fun! International Feast: we are asking each family to send food from your country to be served at lunch. The PTO is organizing this extremely popular part of the day. If you re able to participate, please send servings. Please have your child drop off your contribution in the cafeteria on Friday morning, or feel free to drop it off yourself by 10am. PTO is asking that you label each item with the following: o Name of student o Grade o Country represented Containers that are not disposable will be stored in the cafeteria for pick up the following week. PTO would also love to have or borrow any decorations you may have for the feast! Any questions, please
contact the Room Parent for your child s grade. International Parade: please have your child dress up in cultural dress representing your country. We want the parade to be as colorful as possible! Come to watch the parade at 1:45pm followed by performances and cultural activities from 2pm to 3pm. If you decide to keep your child with you during this time, please make arrangements with their teacher so we can keep track of each student s whereabouts. Calendar change After getting some feedback and wanting to provide more opportunity for parents to meet with teachers, we have decided to adjust the Parent/Teacher conference schedule. This was originally scheduled to take place after school from October and March We have now decided to hold half-days (8am-11:30am) on October 29 & 30, and March 28 & 29. Parent teacher conferences will take place from 12:30pm-4:30pm on these days and can be booked online. Information about how to sign up for the October conferences will be coming to you in the next couple of weeks. Thank you for your understanding. Please click here to download the new calendar.
Busing reminder: Electric bicycles and electric scooters are not allowed on CDIS school buses at any time. Nonelectric skateboards may be taken on the bus and must be taken with the rider when she/he gets off the bus.
2018 CISA U15 & U11 Soccer Tournament The CDIS teams had an exciting weekend at the 2018 CISA U15 & U11 Soccer Tournament. We saw a lot of growth from both the boys' and girls' Middle School teams as the season progressed. It was great to see all the hard work and dedication pay off this weekend. After battling their way through the morning games, both the Middle School boys and girls made it into the championship game.
The girls faced off against LIS who we have seen getting stronger and stronger during the season. They ended up being a challenging opponent to face in the final. The game ended in an exciting golden goal overtime with the CDIS girls managing to put one in right before the final whistle. They were pumped to secure a victory and take home first place for the season. The boys also found themselves facing off against an equally tough boys' team from LIS. Our boys played with heart, passion, skill, and determination. It was some of the best soccer we have seen from the boys this season. The game was a nail biter! CDIS scored first, Léman answered. The score was 1-1. Soon after halftime CDIS took the lead again. It was looking good for the Pandas as the clock started to run out. In the last minutes of the game, LIS was able to put 1 more in, bringing the score to 2-2 and we were headed into overtime. 10 minutes of overtime passed and the score was still even, so the game headed into penalty kicks. The boys gave an incredible effort, but LIS took the win after a 1-2 PK shootout. CDIS boys took home second place for the season. The U11 Elementary team also came out to the tournament this weekend and did an amazing job. The team only had minimal practice before the day of the tournament, but the chemistry they had was incredible. The Elementray team ended the day undefeated after fighting through 6 games during the day. They took home first place! Thank you to all the parents and fans for coming out and cheering on the Pandas!
