Panda Notes February 9th, 2018, Issue 23 Letter from our Chinese Department: Chinese New Year in Guangdong

Chinese teacher, Ms. Guili Huang, holding a Chinese New Year decoration There is a Cantonese saying, "go to the =ower market and have a great new year". The =ower market is a must visit In the days leading up to New Year's Eve, The New Year's Eve feast is one of the most important family gatherings of the year. All the traditional New Year's dishes are chosen because their names are homophones of words with auspicious

everyone is busy doing all the necessary shopping and everything else to get ready. Chinese families will usually buy new clothes, get a haircut, clean the whole house, and put up bright red paper bearing auspicious New Year couplets on the doors of their homes. With each passing day, you will see more and more crowds bustling in the street and more red banners and lanterns raised, especially during the xu days (the 2nd, 5th, 8th, 12th, 15th, 18th, 22nd, 25th, and 28th of the Chinese lunar month). At some homes, neighbors will line up outside with Prewood and grain, waiting to have the grain popped in the traditional way. The explosive sound of the popcorn machine does nothing to dampen the joy of seeing the popcorn =owing out from the machine. Just one bite is a delight. My hometown is in Guangdong. Chinese New Year is a fun and exciting time for Cantonese people.place during Spring Festival. A few days before New Year's Eve, =ower growers will gather from all over and set up colorful =ower stands, pergolas, and arches. The hordes of people and =owers make up a colorful tapestry, which itself signals a prosperous new year. People usually buy small mandarin orange trees because the name of the fruit sounds like 'gold luck' in Chinese. meanings. For example, They also typically buy peach =owers and daffodils because they're blooming in the spring, and everyone brings home as many kinds of =owers as they can. When they get home, they will hang red envelopes on all their new =owers as a symbol of prosperity. When the decorations are all done, it's time to get busy preparing traditional New Year snacks, like puff pastry dumplings and sesame balls. Friends and relatives always lend a hand to help get everything ready.quanji, 'whole chicken', sounds similar to quanjiafu, 'blessed family'; facai, 'seaweed', sounds like facai 'getting rich'; hao, 'oyster', sounds similar to the hao in haoshi, 'good things'; and yu, 'Psh', sounds similar to the yu in niannianyouyu, 'abundance'. It takes all day to get everything ready, and the evening is spent enjoying the feast with the whole family around the table. Afterwards, everyone gathers to watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV and stay up late, waiting eagerly for the coming new year. When the clock strikes midnight, every household lights Precrackers, and the thunderous sound echoes around the whole village! After that, the elders will give red envelopes to younger people, and everyone will go out for a 'walk of luck' around the village. Everywhere you will hear laughter which brings joy to everyone! Happy New Year, Ms. Guili Huang

Chinese Culture Day Today we came together as a school to celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year also called, Spring Festival or Chunjie. The day was filled with Chinese games, dances, and sports. It can be something completely new, or an existing piece. All works will be displayed in the 3rd and 4th =oor galleries and we will have a time for students, parents, and teachers to vote for their favorites. The top three works will be displayed in the reception area at the new campus, while the others will be placed all around the campus. So encourage your child to submit something they re proud of, whether it s a painting, sculpture, or drawing, and together let s make sure our new campus looks great! Any questions, feel free to contact Diane Sonam or any of the art teachers. Middle School Science Olympiad Science Olympiad is a chance for Middle Schoolers at CDIS to learn more about science in a hands-on, experiential way. The activities focus on physics, life science, and chemistry in real life scenarios and serve as a springboard to future in-depth studies in the Peld. Activities included the historically favored bottle rockets, crime-solving, musical instrument building, and more. It was a great day!

High School Boys' Basketball The CDIS basketball teams traveled to Tianjin this past week for the isc tournament. The boys' team participated in a round robin tournament. In this format, each team plays every other team and the two teams with the best records at the end of the tournament play each other for the championship. Our boys ended the week with a 6-1 record with their only loss coming to Tianjin International School (TIS) by a score of Therefore, our team was matched up against TIS for the championship, with TIS being the only undefeated team of the tournament. The championship game was an amazing game with our boys giving an amazing effort in the game. We actually led the entire game before TIS went up by three points with just under a minute remaining in the game. We had an opportunity to score to try and tie the game but the shot was no good and TIS held onto the ball and ran out the clock. The Pnal score of the game was Here are the scores from all of our tournament games: CDIS vs TIS JV 36-8 CDIS vs ISQ CDIS vs WYIS CDIS vs ISW CDIS vs ISQ JV CDIS vs TIS CDIS vs TIS (Championship game) I want to express my gratitude to our players for their hard work and the great character they have shown for this basketball season; it has been an honor to coach

this team. Finally, I want to recognize our two seniors, Drew Campbell and Jaysen Che. Drew was unable to play this year because of an injury but has been a leader and captain from the sidelines. Jaysen also fought off an ankle injury to come back and help us win the CISA tournament and place 2nd in isc. These two young men will be greatly missed next year and I can t wait to see what the future holds for both of them! High School Girls' Basketball The High School girls basketball team arrived in Tianjin on February 1st to join the isc High School Basketball Tournament. We had 6 games from February 2nd to the 3rd. Day 1: The first battle was against ISQ. During the game, Cecelia Dolaz and Anna Shin had to leave because of injuries,. but no one gave up; instead they became more focused on each transition between offense and defense. In the end they took the game easily, with a score of After a short rest, they came out against WYIS, and started strong with score 6-0, and leading by 7 points in the second half. Since there was a lineup change in the second half, Yuri Park started playing forward, and the defensive team played strong. Thanks to positive defense, the team won again with a score of After a two-hours break, the team fought valiantly against ISW, even though everyone was really exhausted. The game was really intense and the score started rising. In the second half, defense started to slip, and offense also

made mistakes and so ISW seized the chance to score as a result. There were only 2 minutes 40 seconds left on the clock, with the two teams tied at The offensive ended up giving ISW the opportunity to make a quick attack, and ISW took 3 more points and won the game. The last game was against TIS with Anna Shin back and playing strong, scoring 12 points. In the second half the team behind 13-17, with a final score of 17-17, so the game went into the overtime. Team leader, Emma Koo, really stood out in overtime. With only 10 seconds left, a fast-break failed. Rachel Schuster followed up and grabbed the ball and sent it to Emma Koo. She was able to score in the last 3 seconds, and bringing the final score to With three wins and one loss, the girls were in second place at the end of Day 1 and were set to play the second day. Day 2: The first game was against ISQ and the team had prepared well for it. In the first half, the whole team pushed themselves to have strong defense-'tough D'-on every inch of the court. As a result, the managed a lead of In the second half, the girls' Tough D led to numerous mistakes from the opposing team and they won the game and secured a spot in the final. The final game was against ISW. The girls continued to lead with strong defense, achieving a score of Erica Shin led the offensive side, scoring three shots in a row and getting a total of6 points, Emma Koo also scored 6 points through fastbreaks and Hana Sato scored 3 points. In the second half, there was no opportunity left for ISW as Cecelia Dolaz was back after hurting her knee, playing strong and getting scoring 4 points with only 1 minute and 34 seconds left. Five seniors returned to the court to enjoy their last game as a CDIS Panda. Together, the lady Pandas pulled out a final championship victory with a score of Over the course of the tournament, the girls showed great spirit and perseverance under pressure. I'm really proud of our girls and how they have shown what CDIS stands for!
