Panda Notes April 27th, 2018, Issue 31 Letter from the Head of Student Services:

Mr. Wilson Wu (the SAT villain) and his beautiful family May 1st may not be a special day to the typical student or parent at CDIS. In fact, on this day this year, no one will roam the CDIS halls here. However, leading up to this date and deadline the intensity rages on inside the minds of several seniors and their family members like nothing they have ever dealt with before. This deadline forces them to decide on a crucial decision that can and will shape them the rest of their lives. They have made wise educational choices for as long as they can remember so that they can get to this day to make this decision. Yes, it s D-day for American colleges: Decision Day. One student (the whole family in fact) is torn between two top university acceptances; one in the US (USC) and another in Hong Kong (HKUST). How should this student decide? Which one provides better opportunities for the future? How should they consider the tuition costs? A myriad of what, if, and how questions go unanswered. There is NO END except for the deadline. Year after year, I have been blessed to counsel students and parents under such pressure. I confess that I may look unruued and composed, but behind that façade, I do get anxious for these students. These students have enlisted my help at a critical junction in their life s story. I am honored and have enjoyed every minute of the various roles in their stories, especially the time reading the script as the villainous SAT proctor YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES LEFT ON YOUR SAT TEST.

U15 (Middle School) Basketball: Game Schedule: April 27th-28th: isc ISW

Middle School Girls' Basketball Coach Jones This past Saturday our Middle School Basketball teams traveled to Meishi International School to participate in the 2018 CISA Middle School Basketball tournament. We finished our season tied for 2 nd place with QSI, therefore, our first game of the tournament was against QSI. Our team started out scoring some baskets early in the game to take a quick lead but found it hard to hit baskets later in the game. QSI could not find a way to score against our defense and only scored four points. All of QSI s points came from free throws. Our girls held onto a slim lead and came out victorious. This win put us in the championship game to face off against the league s first-place team, Léman. During CISA season play Léman was the only team to remain undefeated coming into the tournament. We were definitely the underdogs going into the game but our girls didn t play like it. The game actually stayed scoreless for the first few minutes until we finally made a basket to take an early lead. This game, like the one before it, became a defensive battle with both teams not allowing the other to score. As a matter of fact, our girls played the best defense they have played all year long. They actually held their opponents to one field goal in two games! For those of you that may not follow basketball closely let me explain. A field goal in basketball is when a team scores from a shot made during live play. Therefore, in two games our opponents only made one basket against our set defense. All the

other points (5 points) were from free throws. Our impenetrable defense and toughness helped guide our girls to become CISA champions by defeating Léman 5-3. It has been an amazing year and we still have one more tournament to go when we travel to Wuxi for the isc tournament. If you see one of our Middle School basketball players congratulate them for their hard work, dedication, and being great representatives of our wonderful school. Middle School Boys' Basketball Hudson Olmstead Last week at the CISA tournament the MS boys played their hearts out. Even though they unfortunately had a heartbreaking loss to Meishi in the semifinal game, they never gave up! They did not let that get them down as they came back and played a phenomenal game against QSI, taking home 3rd place in convincing fashion. The players and coaches have high hopes for the isc tournament this weekend and are ready to represent CDIS. Thank you for your support! Go Pandas!

High School Girls' Soccer Coach Blanchard Last weekend the CDIS girls soccer team ended out their season in Wuhan at the 2018 isc Soccer Tournament. The team has worked extremely hard this season in preparation for the tournament. The girls played three games on Friday to determine where they would place in the bracket for Saturday s knock out stages. The girls' first game set a good tone for the day; they tied against ISQ, who was one of the toughest competitors in the tournament. The girls came to their second and third games on Friday losing to both ISW and TIS. It was a rough afternoon in the hot sun, and the girls were playing with everything they had, but could not get a goal to land in the back of the net. Going into Saturday the girls were seeded 5th and had some work to do if they wanted to advance. The first game of the day was against WYIS. The girls knew they had to find their rhythm. They came together as a team and were determined to win. Their determination and teamwork paid off and the girls won their first game 3-0. In the semifinals the girls faced the wildcard of the tournament, an underestimated ISW. It was a battle; the girls played some of the best soccer we have seen all season. Half time came and the score was 0-0 then the final whistle blew with them still at 0-0. The game headed into overtime and the girls were fighting, but still, after two periods of overtime, the score was 0-0. The game finished in penalty kicks. Goalie, Hana Sato, did an amazing job; she blocked the first shot and almost got to the second. ISW s goalie managed to block our first shot as well. When it was all over with, ISW managed to win in PK s 1-0.

The girls played exceptionally well and it was a tough defeat, but they still had a chance at getting third place. The third-place game was against TIS, one of the teams the girls had lost to the day before. They were determined to walk away with a trophy, so they pulled themselves together for their final game of the season. They wanted redemption from the loss the day before and left everything they had out on the field. Captain, Emma Koo, put in an early first goal leaving the Pandas 1-0. TIS pressured and pressured, trying to secure a goal and level things out. The girls were motivated to stop them and shut down every attempt made. The game ended at 1-0 with CDIS taking home third place and beating TIS. The coaches could not be more proud of the way the girls played, the teamwork they showed, and the way they loved and served each other, on and off the field. It was an unforgettable season and I am thankful for the opportunity I have had to coach this team. High School Boys' Soccer Coach Brown This past weekend was an exciting isc tournament for the Panda boys. With two days and six games of playing the boys faced many struggles through heat, rain, and fatigue, but in the end, persevered. Day one was a little lighter for the boys, playing three of the lower seed teams.

Day two was a true test where the boys played three more teams that were higher seeds. The second to last game was against TIS, where the Pandas were down by one with 30 seconds left to go in the game scoring to tie it up. The game ended in a tie, leaving the pandas with one more game where they had to win by two. In the final game, the Pandas scored their first point in the second half and no less than one minute left to go on the clock scored their second goal to seal first place in the tournament!!
