May 7 th -11th Support Staff Member of the Year Mrs. Caro was chosen as our Support Staff Member of the Year! She works at Griffith and Polk Elementary schools as an LPAC Clerk. We would like to thank Mrs. Caro for her kind, caring heart and gracious attitude. Volunteer of the Year Dr. Matt and Mrs. Neyland at District Volunteer Luncheon Congratulations to Lindsey Neyland for being chosen as Griffith's Volunteer of the Year! STAAR Testing May 14 th - 3 rd & 4 th Grade Math STAAR May 15 th --3 rd & 4 th Grade Reading STAAR Our students in 3 rd and 4th grades will be working hard May 14 th and May 15th taking the STAAR tests. To ensure the best possible testing environment, lunch schedules have been changed. We are asking parents not to come to school to eat lunch (May 14 th - May 15th), because of testing. Thank you for your support and understanding.

3 Elementary Eagles Page 3 Birds of Prey We would like to thank Steve Hoddy, founder of Earth Quest and Phil Huxford, Volunteer Program Manager for visiting Griffith with several of their bird friends including, Renegade- Falcon, Laredo-Hawk, Lady Igor-Black Vulture, Horton- Horned Owl and Storm the Andean Condor. Eagles were amazed as Laredo flew high up into the tree tops and Renegade flew around the building and swooped down onto the playground. We even had a special guest who perched himself on a high branch and watched Lady Igor and the others in the program. Storm showed off her massive wingspan to our Eagles. Mr. Hoddy and Mr. Huxford shared lots of important information and facts regarding birds of prey and encouraged our Eagles to visit the Migration Celebration and to check out a field guide from the library to learn more about birds on their own. We would also like to extend a very special thank you to Marty and Carole Cornell for sponsoring this program for our campus. We re looking forward to next year! 4 th Grade Wildlife Refuge Field Trip 4 th Grade Eagles enjoyed a trip to the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. They learned about the environment the wildlife live in and got to have a close encounter with a baby alligator!

4 Elementary Eagles Page 4 Special Rides to School! During Open House, PTO auctioned off a ride in a police car and a ride in a firetruck. Katie in Kindergarten was the lucky recipient of both rides. She rode with Captain Crittenden in the police car with sirens blaring. Katie and her friend Maylin rode in with Tito Rodriguez in the firetruck. Our kindergarteners cheered her on for both of her special arrivals! What an exciting and fun way to get to school! Griffith Performs at BWood! The Griffith Colorguard was invited to perform at the BWood Winterguard state sendoff show. They performed their routine entitled Trolls and even did an encore! Don t miss them in their Spring Show with the Dancing Eagles, May 17th at 5pm at Griffith! Thank you, Ms. Mohrman, Nurse Cox and Ms. Gomez for inspiring our Eagles with amazing performances!

5 Elementary Eagles Page 5 SOAR Visits Griffith Art Showcase Congratulations to Abygail and Scarleth for receiving SOAR awards for being safe, orderly and respectful on the bus. They have set a great example for other students to follow. Way to go Eagles! Just a sample of the amazing art projects our talented Eagles completed in Art Club. Great job Eagles! Volunteer Reception Our volunteers were invited to a Volunteer Reception to thank them for all their hard work and commit-mint this year. They have provided countless hours working in classrooms assisting teachers, working at the book fair, chaperoning field trips and of course serving on our PTO. We would also like to thank Mrs. Schurtz and the Hospitality Committee for hosting this delicious reception! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for next year, please check out the District's web site, click on Community and look for Becoming a Volunteer and follow the directions. We always welcome volunteers to assist with the many tasks at hand.

6 0 Elementary Eagles Page 6 First Grade recently visited Space Center Houston where they got to learn about space, rockets, astronauts, shuttles and much more. Everyone had a blast! Thank you to all of our 1 st Grade Teachers, parent volunteer chaperones and all our donors for helping make this day extra special. Kindergarten enjoyed many activities during their visit to Quintana Beach. Thank you to our Kindergarten Teachers and parent volunteers for a fun time in the sun!

Free Read Jamboree Saturday, May 19 th 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Lanier Middle School Summer Reading Kick-off Parents/Guardians are reminded to pick up any medications that have been brought to school for your student. Medications cannot be kept at school during the summer. According to BISD policy, all medication (prescription and non-prescription) must be transported to and from school by a parent/guardian. Student may not transport any medication to or from school. Any medication not picked up on the last day of school will be discarded. HEB Bag Winner HEB hosted a plastic bag competition with local elementary schools. Our Eagles really took it to heart and brought in 44,515 bags! Each grade level competed to see who could bring in the most bags. 3rd Grade won with a total of 14,206 bags! Way to go Eagles! Nurse Notes We would like to invite you to join our PTO. For K- 4 th grades, we will have waterslides, field events, sno-cones, dance time and a movie time throughout the day.
