I hope you are all enjoying your summer and traveling at every opportunity. Summer will be gone before we know it and the beautiful fall colors will start showing. Our rallies are a lot of fun this year. George Lamb is doing a great job in arranging our schedules and activities. If you are enjoying the rallies please be certain to tell him. Also, if the meals are to your liking let our chefs know. It s easy to just assume they know their efforts are appreciated but it s always good to say to them Thanks for the great job you are doing. We are in the process of securing our officer nominations for club year If you are asked to serve as an officer or a committee chairman, please do say Yes, I will serve. and help out. Our club is only as good as our officers and members, so we need your cooperation. Your own ideas can be more quickly acknowledged and carried out if you are in there helping us. Even better, please volunteer! Remember to reserve a site at Tanglewood for the October Election and 50 th Anniversary rally. September 10 th is the reservation deadline. Call Tanglewood Campground to reserve your campsite and call George Lamb or me to reserve for the dinner on October 16 th. We need a head count for the food preparation for the dinner. All our club s past presidents have been invited as well as former active members so we can renew old acquaintances at the dinner. Our last comment about the Anniversary Rally and Dinner. We will ask each member to contribute $15 ($30 per couple) for the total rally cost and this money will cover the cost of the Manor House and help us have enough money to present a $1,000 donation to Ronald McDonald House that evening. We will have a representative from Ronald McDonald House visiting us for the dinner and presentation. See you down the road and safe travels. Linda Fishel President
2 REVIEW CAROLINAS UNIT OF NORTH CAROLINA CHILDREN & GRANDCHILDREN RALLY-- --AUGUST 5-8, 2010 BOONE KOA CAMPGROUND --BOONE, NC The Boone Rally was most enjoyable with nice weather, good food, and eleven units (22 people) showing up to share a relaxing weekend. We kicked things off with another great social time with lots of goods snacks, as usual. It was a pleasure to meet new members Margaret Van de Ree and John Corriher, from Davidson, and a pleasure to spend the weekend getting to know them. Margaret gained instant acceptance when she brought an outstanding dessert to Friday dinner. It consisted of everything good put in one bowl and lightly stirred together. New members George Elam and Toni Kratt, from Charlotte, were at Asheville and Boone. They had children and a grandchild visit with them and it was great to have them join us. Burl & Mimi Hammock, who were at the Mt. Airy Rally, joined the Unit at the Boone Rally. Mimi is Bob Clark s cousin. Margie and I know Burl and Mimi from high school days so it is great to welcome them as new members. Dale and Sandy Dowler had granddaughter Siina with them and she seemed to have everything (and everyone) under control. Friday, we had an excellent meal. Charlie & Linda Fishel brought corn and okra and we decided just to grill the meat to go with the veggies. Everyone enjoyed the corn, okra and fixings from the grill and especially enjoyed the table full of desserts. Thanks to all the dessert chefs who contributed to this wonderful meal. Saturday breakfast was sausage biscuits followed by our business meeting. Margie and I had to leave Saturday after the business meeting but I understand that everyone had a good meal at Mike s Inland Seafood House. It s great having new members that share our enthusiasm for fun and fellowship of camping at our rallies. We look forward to meeting other new members at future rallies and seeing our members that have missed recent rallies. 3 Carolinas Unit of North Carolina - WBCCI Community Service Projects As a reminder, our unit will continue to support the local Ronald McDonald House this year. We will start collecting "Wish List" contributions at our July rally. A copy of the Ronald McDonald House "Wish List" is available. Please contact me if you would like to have a copy. As stated in the President s Corner of this issue of The Tarheel Traveler from the Carolinas Unit s President Linda Fishel, we also hope to present the Ronald McDonald House with a donation of $1,000 from our Carolinas Unit of North Carolina during our 50 th Anniversary Dinner to be held on October 16. Our participation in community service projects also earns our unit points for the merit award program. Sandy Dowler Community Service Carolinas Unit of NC Unit Rally HIGHLAND HAVEN -- COPPER HILL, VA -- September 9-12, 2010 Highland Haven is truly one of the most beautiful settings for an RV park that we have in the Southeast. The Blueridge Mountains will still be green and beautiful but without the summer tourists. Sunsets are the highlight of the day as we gather along the edge of the meadow. We will have social times for visiting and sharing snacks provided by the members. Lots of free time is planned for visiting area vineyards, hiking to the waterfall in the park, and visiting Floyd where we can enjoy the music at the Country Store on Friday evening. Duane Carter and Jerry Hall are in charge of meals for this rally. Plans include a breakfast with omelets in a bag and a dinner with grilled meat supplied by each member and the club supplying salad and dessert. Remember to bring your meat for grilling! Make your reservations now by calling Remember this park does not take credit cards..use cash or checks only. (We apologize for the area code for the phone being incorrect in the July Newsletter. It is correct as shown above.) Directions: Take I-77N to Exit 14 at Hillsville, VA. Follow route 221 N to Floyd, VA.
