1 Quick News November 25, 2013 Superintendent s Message John P. Kronour, Ph.D. As we prepare for Thanksgiving break, I am readily reminded how thankful we should be to be a part of such an excellent school district and caring, supportive environment. I am thankful for the outstanding teachers who come to work every day prepared to provide the best learning opportunities for our students. I am thankful for the administrators and support staff who make my job easier and enjoyable. I am thankful for the many volunteers who dedicate hours to our children without looking for anything in return. They play an integral role in the district s many success stories and enrich the lives of our students. I hope you too have much to be thankful for this year. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Congratulations to the THS Varsity Football Team for a fabulous and memorable season! Although the season came to an end after Friday s regional final matchup with Trotwood, this team made school history. In doing so, it set the bar high for future football athletes. 2 Tasty Letter Writing Lesson LT Ball students in the class of Heather Her recently wrote business letters as an extension activity while reading Dear Mr. Henshaw. A few students were delighted to receive letters and items from the business they contacted. In the photo to the right, Colin Maalouf holds his response letter from Rothschild Farms, which also sent him four gourmet dips and pretzels to share with his classmates. Water Treatment Plant Fourth grade students gave a thumbs up for the tour of the Tipp City Water Treatment Plant. The tour ties into their reading unit of Our World of Water and their science class study of the sources of water on Earth s surface. Students learned Tipp City gets its water from an underground aquifer and even though our water resources are plentiful they should never be wasteful. Hoop Stars Congratulations to the 2013 Elks Club Hoop Shoot Champions from LT Ball!! Rachel Wildermuth and Andrew Baileys won the 12/13 year old age division. Peter Guevara and Corinn Siefring won the 10/11 year old age division. Charlie Spencer and Caris Romine won the 9/10 year old age division.

3 Hoedown LT Ball students entertained the residents of SpringMeade with a special square dance performance. The students learned their steps in physical education classes Native Americans from Boonshoft Museum The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery traveled to Nevin Coppock to give first graders a lively lesson on Native Americans. Students examined many historic artifacts, learned how climate and location influenced home building, discovered what food sources were available and how they built tools. Students used their artistic skills for a Native American project on bead making. The International Potluck and International Movie Celebration was a chance for members to share an international meal together and watch a French comedy. Students talked about upcoming events and enjoyed the time together with club advisor Mrs. Vernon-Biteau. In the above left photo are International Club members Bobby Ryan and William Dean. 4 Spanish Immersion Mrs. Lauran Vernon-Biteau and 18 Spanish IV Honors students enjoyed a total Spanish immersion experience at Wright State University. While there they spoke Spanish with native speakers, professors, and other students from around Ohio while broadening their knowledge about the Spanish-speaking world. Activities included presentations on diverse countries, food tasting, Hispanic musical instruments, types of music, and dances. If caught speaking English, the student was taken to the cárcel for an intense one-on-one Spanish lesson with a Wright State Spanish Professor! El Dia de los Muertos - Day of the Dead THS students enjoyed learning about the Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos) in Mrs. LauraVernon-Biteau s class. Some students participated with hands-on activities, which included decorating their own Day of the Dead Calavera. Calaveras are sugar skulls and are seen throughout Mexico during the festivities related to El Día de los Muertos. Some of those skulls are shown in the photo on the right.

5 Holiday Spirit and the Gift of Giving Amasani Kindergarten students have been busy earning money to donate to their Amasani, which means Navajo Grandma. Because of the students generosity and kind hearts, Emma Bahe, pictured to the left, will receive a food box and yarn. The students in the photo are Alex Darner, Hayleigh Szelestey, Kayleigh Diaz, and Ben Bledsoe. This is the 18 th year the district has participated in this program. Helpful Elves Meanwhile, third grade students in the class of Heidi Silvers wanted to do random acts of kindness for children and so they adopted three less fortunate children from a local angel tree for the holidays. They earned their money to purchase gifts by doing chores at home and raiding their piggy banks. The students also announced Make A Difference Monday and created writing and journal entries about what their chore money could do when they put it all together as 22 third graders. Holiday Gift Gallery at Tipp High School! December 5 7:40 am 7:00 pm December 6 7:40 am 2:40 pm Students have been busy making a variety of items suitable for decorating or gift giving. All items are priced $7.00 or less and would make great gifts for friends, family or stocking stuffers. Including: Decorated Tabletop Christmas Trees Bookmarks Snowmen and Angel Decorations Heat/Cold Therapy Bags Memo Clips Jewelry and Scarves Tree Ornaments Gift Bags and Tags This is a student-centered project with all profits going to support community based educational activities. 6 Nevin Coppock 1 st Grade Christmas Program: Students have been camping and hiking as they learn this year, and Nevin Coppock has been their lodge on their educational journey! But, oh no!!! What if Santa can't find them at their campsite on Christmas Eve??? Come see the Christmas program and find out what happens!!! Thursday, December 5, 2013 Tipp High School Center for Performing Arts First show at 5:30 p.m. 6:15 p.m. Second show at 7:00 p.m. 7:45 p.m. Principal for a Day These Broadway Elementary students read their way to the opportunity to serve as Principal for a day, working side-by-side with their Principal, Mr. Galen Gingerich. Students were challenged to earn 110 points through the Accelerated Reading program BEFORE January 17 th. Left to right are Becca Sites, Amelia Campbell, Olivia Amlin, Kayla Williams and Jianna Nichols. Keep up the good reading habits! Gettysburg Address Broadway students in the class of Kim Adkins observed the 150 th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address with a special program for their classmates. President Abraham Lincoln (aka Principal Galen Gingerich) delivered his inspirational and famously short address.

7 LT Ball Science Gallery Fifth grade students at LT Ball welcomed family and friends to their Science Gallery. Students selected and researched a topic for an at-home science experiment and then presented their findings. Some of the students will present their projects at the annual Tippecanoe Science Fair in February. REMINDER: Thanksgiving Recess. No school November 27,28,29!

8 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CHEERLEADERS Congratulations to the district cheerleaders who recently competed in a CBC Competition. The junior high cheerleaders (pictured below) took home 2 nd place in the middle school non-tumbling division. The varsity squad (pictured above) earned an impressive fifth place finish against teams that are considered competition squads.

9 BASEBALL FUNDRAISER On Monday, November 25 th, from 4:00-8:00, Chipotle on Miller Lane will donate 50% of their food sales to our baseball program to anyone who comes into their restaurant that night. The only thing that is required is that each person must have the attached flyer (either paper copy or on their cell phone) or mention that they are with the Tippecanoe baseball team. If you could, please make copies of the flyer and hand them out to everyone you know or send this message via your phone.
