Quick News November 3, 2014 Superintendent s Message John P. Kronour, Ph.D. It is an absolute pleasure to write today s Superintendent s Message as we say CONGRATULATIONS to the boys cross country team -- the 2014 Division II STATE CHAMPIONS. With this astounding victory on Saturday, the boys cross country team also made school history as the first Tippecanoe High School athletic team to ever win a STATE title. These young men and their coaches realized their goal through hard work, commitment, perseverance, loyalty and teamwork. Well done Mitchell Poynter, Daniel Frame, Michael Taylor, Jacob Stillwagaon, Spencer Ranft, Jordan Brown,, and Tim Andrews. Thank you to our terrific coaches Byron Kimmel, Nick Culver, Jason Salyer and Jack Lintz for teaching, motivating and inspiring these young men, all the while believing in their abilities and believing that dreams come true.
Parents, students, staff, and community members gave the cross country team a warm and spirited welcome home. The state champs received a standing ovation as they entered the gym with the band playing the fight song and the cheerleaders providing the tunnel. They even signed a few autographs and posed for a variety of photos including the one above with Peg Osborne, their junior high coach(now retired) who was instrumental in instilling the boys love for running.
HANDS-ON LEARNING IN THE DISTRICT OUTDOOR SCIENCE LAB -- Broadway s third grade students enjoyed an afternoon at Coppock Woods, a Tipp City gem and outdoor learning environment. Principal Galen Gingerich led the exploring students on their exciting adventure. The students learned about prey, predators, trees, wildlife, and soil. They also learned how to use compasses and played hide and seek using different coordinates to find each other in the woods. Thank you to the conservationists from Miami County Parks and the Miami Soil and Water Conservation District for assisting. And, thank you to the Lifeway Baptist Church for letting our students use your facilities! AFTER SCHOOL SCIENCE LAB -- Students in the 5 th Grade Science Club made slime while learning about the states of matter. Slime is a polymer which can be classified as a solid or a liquid. HALLOWEEN SCIENCE LAB -- Middle school students also enjoyed a lab making slime learning about careful measurements and weights necessary to create the correct consistency. Some students ended up with stickier-than-expected results.
PUMPKIN ESTIMATION Second grade students at Broadway Elementary got their hands a bit slimy with last week s math lesson. Pumpkin Estimation required students to estimate a pumpkin s circumference, weight, stem length, and number of seeds before getting the actual numbers. Some of the students were pretty close on the weight but surprised when they had to count hundreds of seeds. GUEST SPEAKER-- Students in the Civil War Class of Joe Bellas learned about battlefield medicine. Local historian and retired surgeon, Dr. Warren Kaebnick, introduced the students to the challenges of caring for the sick and wounded during the Civil War. He "demonstrated" amputation and showed the tools(or facsimiles) commonly used, including the monaural stethoscope. Civil war medicine ushered in some modern day techniques. GUEST SPEAKER-- Keeping healthy smiles. Students at Broadway Elementary School learned about proper oral hygiene including how to brush, the correct way to floss, and the importance of good nutrition. Students were a bit surprised to see how much sugar is in some of their favorite beverages. Thank you Burke Orthodontics for this educational assembly. Sugar Shock from soft drinks. Proper brushing techniques. Food Choices: Good or Bad?
Fall Plays, Poetry and Song Some very talented first graders at Nevin Coppock displayed their theatrical talents during the Fall Play Performances that also included poetry and song. They delighted the crowd of parents, siblings, Grandparents, neighbors and special friends. The students were spook-tacular! LT Ball s THRILLING Half-time Show LT Ball s zombies came out in force for Friday s football half-time performance of Thriller. Thank you to the staff members who helped make this a success and a great memory for our students. Special thanks to PE Teacher Jeanne Koch and Music Teacher Sharon Pfister for coordinating it! And, another special thank you to the families who didn t let the wind, rain, and cool temperatures get in the way of a great night! Channel 7 has a video of the students amazing performance. Go to:
Red Ribbon Week at TMS Red Ribbon Week is a week to spread awareness about making good choices. TMS Student Council encouraged the entire student body to join them by participating in five themed days including Jersey Day to stay active and Costume Day to scare away all your bad decisions. The group also held a Tailgate and Costume Party. Classroom Halloween Parties Games, crafts, food and fun. Thank you to all the parents who made the day special.
ART CLUB Art Club students at LT Ball created some haunted house pumpkins with cartooning. These spooky houses were filled with creepy crawly critters, scary creatures, and of course surrounded by tombstones! THS Theatre Hosts Annual Trick-or-Treat So Kids Can Eat Food Drive Nearly forty members of the THS Drama Club and Octagon Club put on their favorite Halloween costumes and took to the streets of Tipp City during Beggar s Night for their annual canned food collection. The event, Trick-or-Treat So Kids Can Eat, is sponsored by the International Thespian Society. This year the students brought in record-breaking donations from a variety of neighborhoods. So much food was collected, it doubled the number of boxes set aside to transport it a wonderful problem to have! All collections are being donated to the Tipp Needy Basket of Miami County. Supplies For Veterans Fifth grade students in the class of Kem Fischer are extremely proud of the pile of food they donated for men and women serving overseas. As part of a Veterans Day project, students are asked to write a letter of thanks to a family member who serves or served our country. After several students stated they didn t know someone, this idea was suggested. It just so happens that Mrs. Fischer s cousin, David Townsend, (pictured in the left photo) is a chaplain in the U.S. Army serving in Kuwait. He provided a list of suggested items and will distribute the generous donations.
