1 Tipp City Exempted Village Schools Volume 1, Issue 11 October 20, 2015 Superintendent s Thoughts Dr. Gretta Kumpf On November 3rd, voters will elect three new Board of Education members who will serve the district for a four year term. We are fortunate to have a field of six contenders who are keenly interested in representing the citizens of Tipp city Exempted Village Schools. This is a vital civic commitment that significantly impacts our children, schools, and local community. The school board sets policies, supports the superintendent s vision, hires leadership, approves a budget and continually seeks to improve the quality of a Tipp education. I encourage all registered voters to research the candidates and where they stand on the critical issues facing the district. Know the facts and understand the board s role in order to make an educated decision. I urge you to support the candidates who you feel care about the district and will best serve Tipp Schools and its community. Passion, Teamwork, Commitment...A Powerful Combination Homecoming Court King and Queen: Jack Peura and Emily Gootzeit

2 Page 2 Congratulations THS Quiz Team The Tippecanoe High School Academic Quiz Team finished a strong second place at the Solon High School Fall Invitational. The team of Laurel Spangler, Alisha Bhagwat, and Michael Vestey performed well against 18 teams, amassing a 9-2 record on their way to the championship game. Laurel also finished as the top individual, scoring almost 90 points a game. With this high finish, the team has already qualified for OAC regionals in April as well as NAQT Nationals in Dallas in May. The team s high finish was a bit of a surprise, since it was accomplished with only three players, instead of the normal four person complement. In the photo left to right are club adviser Joe Bellas, Laurel Spangler, Alisha Bhagwat, and Michael Vestey. The Faces of a Champion Tippecanoe Middle School students enjoyed a short break from afternoon studies to celebrate the school s successful fundraiser. Top sellers from each grade, and selected teachers, competed in a pie eating contest. Without using their hands, contestants needed to be the first person to find the Swedish Fish buried in the whipped cream treat. Students sold Entertainment Books that contain coupons and discounts for a variety of establishments. Tipp Students Raising Funds on Behalf of Classmate Tippecanoe High School s ASTRA Club announced a new fundraising campaign, "Lend a Hand to Fight Muscular Dystrophy." At a recent Pep Rally, student Mason Royce, who has Muscular Dystrophy, explained to his classmates that this group of diseases causes progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. Some people who have muscular dystrophy will eventually lose the ability to walk. Some may have trouble breathing or swallowing. Donations allow students to place a hand print on the school wide poster showing support for those with Muscular Dystrophy. The class with the highest average donated will win a breakfast prepared by ASTRA and Mason Royce.

3 Page 3 Broadway s Special Lunch Guests Students at Broadway Elementary School celebrated National School Lunch week with some very special guests. Parents and some grandparents joined their favorite 2nd and 3rd graders for lunch, a tour of the classroom, a visit to the book fair and a stop on the playground. A Day with the Dogs Two very special dogs visited students at Broadway Elementary School as part of an incentive program offered by teacher Sandy Beck. Mrs. Beck knows how much her students LOVE animals so she decided to use them to motivate and encourage the children to be their best. Tipp graduate Emily Trost brought Barley, a golden doodle therapy dog while graduate Taylor Rittenhouse brought Rico, a service dog. Therapy dogs provide affection to people in nursing homes, schools, hospice and hospitals. Service dogs provide assistance to people with medical, physical and emotional challenges. Students Study 18 th Century Primary Source While studying America s Age of Reason literary period, students in Ms. Aimee Noel s class took time out to read this proclamation posted by the governor of the Rhode Island colony on May 12, Students studied the writing style, historical context, and content, as well as the typeset and material of this authentic colonial broadside. It is on loan to Ms. Noel.

4 Page 4 Crazy, The Green Team Colorful, Mismatched, Wacky Third grade students in the class of Miss Mary Kate Sowder donned their finest attire to impress the judges at the Adjective Fashion Show. The silly kids opted for some very creative outfits and proudly walked the runway as the judges (also known as classmates) wrote down adjectives to describe their clothing. The Tippecanoe Middle School Green Team keeps busy cleaning the school s courtyard in an effort to restore it to the beautiful outdoor learning space that once existed. The after school club also works to promote recycling, waste reduction, energy conservation and pollution prevention. On November 2 nd, Sinclair Community College is hosting an open house for all high school juniors and seniors who are interested in attending Sinclair and entering into the Electrical Trades Program. The emphasis will be on the school s Registered Apprenticeship Program and possible career options. The open house will take place at Sinclair s Electrical Engineering Technology Building at 35 Eaker Street in Dayton. The open house is from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Local teams are being formed for Destination ImagiNation, an international educational program that gives students an amazing outlet for exploration and unlimited creativity. This is a terrific program that teaches leadership, teamwork, positive thinking, and project management. Teams solve open-ended challenges in one of 7 categories and present their solutions at a Regional Tournament. All students in the district are encouraged to get involved. For more information and registration form go to
