1 Page M-1 Newsletter Pennsylvania New York New Jersey Delaware National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts Winter/Spring January - May 2017 Regional Coordinators Letter Dear M-1 Region Members: I cannot believe that Christmas has come and gone. It seems that the older we get the faster the time flies by. I have just managed to get my Christmas Wreaths off my gates in time for the Valentine s Day Wreaths. I see the same time flying by for the National Houseparty in Alexandria, VA and Sleepy Hollow, Small Scale in Scranton, PA. Time to send in those registration forms and make hotel reservations. The Houseparties will be here in the blink of an eye, or so it seems. Since Scranton is near my home town I am really excited about it. I have been scoping the area out near the hotel and around the city for some great places to eat and sites to see and will make those known as time approaches. Marilyn and I attended the Small Scale in Greenville, South Carolina and had a wonderful time. We loved dressing up and we were really impressed by all the other wonderful fashions from that 20 s that we saw. We took advantage of Joanne Roberts theme luncheon and received the most wonderful room box from her for attending. The Souvenirs and other gifts at the Small Scale were really wonderful as well. If you have never attended a Houseparty you don t know what you are missing. I am almost too embarrassed to say I was a member of NAME for about 16 years before I had the opportunity to attend a National. Since I work full time, it was hard for me to take time off, and I really did not understand what they were all about. You almost have to attend to understand the enthusiasm for the hobby that you feel in the class rooms, Thursday night project room, sales room, round table rooms, breakfasts, lunches, dinners, Houseparty helpers etc, etc. I could go on, but I am not sure Callie left me that much space in the newsletter for this update. Marilyn and I will be attending Alexandria, which is a Circus theme. We are plotting our costumes now. So many ideas, so hard to pick just one. We may have to have several costumes to wear over the course of the Houseparty. We look forward to seeing you, enjoying time with you and just having some old fashioned fun. 2 Page 2 M1 Sleepy Hollow Houseparty News Our house party is only 8 months away! Centerpieces are being worked on, tote bags are filling up, and souvenirs have been chosen. All of the expected Houseparty activities will be happening - workshops, theme luncheons, hospitality room excitement, and then there will be some special fun. One of the fun activities planned will be a room door decorating event. Registered Houseparty hotel guests may decorate their room door with Sleepy Hollow, Halloween, or seasonal décor. If one person does the decorating, there will be one prize; if two people team up and decorate their room door, there will be two prizes. Participating door decorators will get a ticket to enter in the drawing, which will be held at Saturday night s dinner. The hotel has given Houseparty attendees permission to decorate their hotel room door with removable, non-permanent decorations (please use blue tape, museum putty, or 3M hangers nothing that at will permanently mark or damage the hotel property). Another activity will be Trick-or-Treating for Minis, (more fun than candy)! Twenty (yes, 20) Committee Members wearing special Trick-or- Treat identifying badges will be giving out mini treats to attendees who present them with a numbered ticket. Tickets will be included in the registration packet at sign-in. So far, we have many folks who are donating spooky treats for our team to give out. And don t forget the culmination of our Sleepy Hollow-themed houseparty will be a costume party on Saturday night! Registration opens April 14, 2017, so all forms sent before that date count as first day requests. Winner of the Debbie Young House - Lesia Lennex M1 Sleepy Hollow Special Request The committee is currently looking for donations of Door Prizes and Houseparty Helpers. Door Prizes can be valued between $10-$50, and can range from tweezers to kits. Donated Houseparty Helpers are designer and/ or handcrafted items valued at $ or more. Items valued less than $ are gladly accepted and will be combined with other donated items to make their combined value reach $ Companies, clubs, shops or individuals may donate a vignette, room box, dollhouse or a very special piece of furniture or accessories. Cash may also be donated for a shopping spree in the Sales Room. Houseparty Helper tickets will be sold on all donated items, with the proceeds used to benefit NAME. We hope you will share your talents, creativity and generosity in your donations to make the Legend of Sleepy Hollow 2017 Small Scales Houseparty a spooktacular event. If you wish to participate and be recognized in the Souvenir Book, please contact Debbie Colombo at Submitted by Debbie Colombo WEBSITE INPUT NEEDED Our Webmaster, Sue Seiffert, does a wonderful job with the M1 Website but she can only use what we send in, so we need to help her out!! There is room for pictures of club members, projects completed, information about upcoming events, and even lists of Shops, Clubs, and places to see Minis in our Region. Our Website is now linked to the NAME website, so let s get the word out about M1! Send pictures and info to chochisu@ix.netcom.com

3 Page 3 HELP WANTED Fun Day (Reservations Required) Registration for the Alexandria Convention opened on January 27! Dealer, workshop, and theme luncheon lists are at Since the Ringling Brother and Barnum and Bailey Circus is closing for good in May 2017 we can at least relive our wonderful experiences in miniature. Did you know? There is a group of people who specialize in miniature circus scenes? They are The Circus Model Builders of America and there are "LOTS" (instead of regions) all over the US. A few NAME members also belong to this special group of miniaturist and have arranged for a display to be in the Arbors Room at the NAME convention in Alexandria VA. You don't want to miss this special display. Michiana Miniature Guild Offers Educational Idea Michiana Miniature Guild believes its youth outreach program is planting seeds for the future. It s fulfilling and truly exciting to watch children exercise their creativity as they make a miniature project of their very own. Members of MMG have been teaching free make-and-take projects for young people for many years, initially through the One More Time teaching club, funded by some of the profits from the 2004 Indiana State Day. The club would be glad to talk with others about its teaching experiences as it strives to spread interest in the hobby of miniatures. See contact information for Michiana Miniature Guild on the NAME website. Pictures from one of our recent events can be seen on-line at flickr.com/ photos/bristolsun/sets/. Select Making Miniatures at the Bristol Indiana Library on Wed., Dec. 28, The 2017 NAME National Convention needs helpers to "dress", paint and otherwise embellish miniature clowns, circus people, animals of all kinds and other circus items that will be used as prizes, gifts and decorations. No special skill or talent required, so if you have been looking for an opportunity to contribute to next summer's event, now is your chance! For a fun day with like-minded people sign up for one or more workshops on either March the 31 th or April1 st in Westminster, MD. We will start at 10 AM and stop at 4 PM Bring your lunch, there will be drink, and desserts available. You will need very basic tool, glue, tweezers, scissors, ruler and any tool that you cannot travel without. There will be materials, paints and lots of embellishments available. You do not need to bring any thing unless you have something special you want to use. If you have something in the circus line that you would like to embellish for yourself feel free to bring it along. Reservations are required as space is limited. 4 Page 4 Startin Small & Ladies of Adventure October was a busy month for the Startin' Small Mini Club and our sister group, Ladies of Adventure. On the eighth, we all met at a member's home to build our bunk beds on Name Day. After a delicious lunch, we eagerly tackled the project. Most of us didn't want to make the bedding yet, until we decide where we will use the beds. Then we will be able to choose the colors & styles to suit that project. On October 16, we took an array of items to the Hankin Library in Chester Springs, PA and used them in the library's display case. As we always do, we had our blue ribbon certificate and a Startin' Small logo tote on the top shelf. We also showed an unpainted (but assembled) bunk bed, along with some tools (ruler, tweezers, glue and xacto knife) to give an idea of what it takes to assemble a miniature. A few days later, on October 22, three members taught a children's workshop - "Make a Pot of Flowers" - in a room in the library. We arrived early to set up the tables with cloths, kits & all supplies needed. The children "individualized" their pots so no two looked the same. While one person went around helping the kids, another gave a brief talk about our club & miniatures in general. Since the children finished in one hour, and we had requested 11/2 hours, we took them to the display case and answered their many questions about how we made the things displayed. The children & their mothers oo-ed and aah-ed about everything. Then the children politely thanked us and departed with their finished pots in zip lock bags. It was a busy month, but we all had a great time! Submitted by Susan Sharratt Tote Bag Favors Needed! The favor bags are ready, the letters inviting clubs to donate favors are in the mail. Look for the jack-o-lantern stamps! A few favors have come and it's exciting to see the boxes in all sizes arrive. I'm asking everyone to please donate to the favor bags. Remember how much fun you have when you get your bag at registration? Some of us peek in the bag in the lobby, others take them to their room to spread all the goodies on the bed while others meet up in an alcove to look through their loot. Just like kids at Halloween with their candy, we can't wait to look through all the goodies in our bags! I want to mention that it's not just Sleepy Hollow favors we seek - it's all things Halloween, autumn and the harvest. Think bushels of apples, corn stacks, gourds and of course pumpkins! It's putting up the harvest for the winter to come, the crisp air and the colorful autumn leaves that carpet the ground. The gathering of friends and family to a bonfire while playing games and drinking cider or listening to someone read the story of the legend of sleepy hollow. We have 250 bags to fill, but if that seems like a lot to manage, then favors in lots of 50 or 100 are appreciated, too. This presents a great opportunity to get friends together to make something for our tote bags. I look forward to Autumn in Scranton this year where friends will gather and have a merry time at The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Houseparty. Please send tote bag favors to me by August 15: Ann Pennypacker 3059 Horseshoe Trail Chester Springs Pa Submitted Ann Pennypacker - Tote Bag Chair EDITOR S NOTE: Deadline for the next issue (May - August 2017) will be May 10, Please send me any special events happening during the summer, activities and projects you or your club have been working on, and so on. It would be great to have a tutorial/project in our newsletter if someone has ideas to share. Callie - weefolkandfantasy@gmail.com

5 Page 5 Capital Area Tiny Treasures C C.A.T.T Submitted by Carol Reynolds Capital Area Tiny Treasures exhibited once again at the 10th annual Ballston Women's Club Festival of Trees. Our theme was "A Peek Into the World of Miniatures". Last spring we started decorating doors and windows for ornaments. We finished them up over the summer and this past fall. Also, members liked a project they saw in the Miniature Gazette which featured decorated door scenes. This became our fall project. Here are some members putting the finishing touches on our Festival of Trees exhibit. From left are Pat Youmans, Gladys Petersen, Sue Lynch and Amy George. For Christmas we went to Judson Meadows where our oldest member at 92, Jane Coffey, now resides. We had lunch in a private dining room. Sue Lynch gave us all cardstock houses and buildings she put together. They were purchased from the Miniature Collector magazine. Mary Chris Schultz made everyone teeny tiny snowmen. The desserts were made by Amy George. We had delicious decorated cupcakes and the brownie gingerbread man held by Sue Lynch. It was a very nice time This spring only one meeting will be held in the months Jan-March. Everyone will be working on their own projects while looking for a new project to work on and ideas for next year's Festival of Trees. We'll keep looking online and in the Miniature Gazette for more inspiration. The Minis of NEPA C-834 Nanticoke, PA Our club enjoyed our annual Christmas Party the first Sunday in December at the home of Marilyn Littleford. We all enjoyed good food, good company and best of all we enjoyed the exchange of our Mini Christmas Gifts and table favors. Also one of the most looked forward to things at our party is our game of Dirty Bingo. We have so much fun at the game that the girls look forward to it year after year. Our project for the month of January was a library room done in a book. The class was led by the talented Michelle Faleshock. The kit included the book and bookcases to go into it. It is a two story library. Now we have to fill the shelves with books, another project we will plan for at a later date. (see more pics below). In February we will be doing a porch with Debbie Kostyk and are planning to follow it up with classes on decorating it for different seasons including stained glass window panels that will change with the season. Most exciting thing happening in our M1 Region is the Small Scale House Party, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, September 21-24, which is being held in Scranton, PA which is only about 20 to 30 minutes from us. Hope you all had a great holiday and are looking forward to warmer weather which also brings the Miniature Shows. So for now, stay warm and work on your minis. Mini Hugs Marilyn Littleford Jane & Debbie with their Library projects.

6 Page 6 On December 3rd, 2016, approximately 60 Girl Scouts participated in a Miniatures Workshop led by the First State Mini Club of Delaware. The instructors taught new techniques using paper, cardboard, found objects, polymer clay and cloth to make items for a decorative table. The girls also were taught the mathematical concept of scale and the use of specialized mini tools. All the Juniors, Cadettes and Seniors earned the Miniature Badge/IP. This event was organized by Lois Weyer. Angie Phillips - flowers; First State Miniature Club Girl Scout Workshop Joan Hoyt table making Patterson Library Hosts Miniature Display The Patterson Library in Patterson NY hosted a miniature display in October for National Dollhouse and Miniatures month. Display pieces were by Bernadette Shustak and Debbie Colombo. Bernadette and Debbie also taught an introductory course to miniatures for a group of 19. The class was a shutter with some filled flower pots. It was done purchasing all items from Michael's and Hobby Lobby to show that miniatures do not have to be costly. We spoke about different scales with examples, as well as items that were made by hand. A few collectors pieces were brought as well so they could see some of the expert craftsmanship that goes into this hobby. Feedback about the class was excellent, and we may have a convert or two!
